I don't understand why Jonah Hex should count . His first appearance was a solo story about him . It wasn't a story about an established character where he gets introduced. He was the headliner of the story. Maybe the confusion is that he first appeared in an anthology title ? Yes, now that I'm clearer on the rules, I agree. I'm not questioning the rules, I'm full on board with them, but I had misinterpreted them initially. Boy am I relieved that the rabbit never had a solo series.

I have so many questions... sorry...
If a character began life in an anthology series and later received their own series, is that a spin-off or did they just get their own book?
If a character was the main character in a back-up strip before getting their own book, does that count as a spin-off?
If a character was part of a strip in an anthology series, and became so popular that they got their own strips in said anthology, is that a spin-off?
If a character began life in an anthology series and became so popular that they took over the entire book and it was renamed after the character, does that count as spinning off into his own title?

If they had their own featured stories in the anthology book. They are not eligible. If they were a supporting character in an anthology series and got their own series , they are eligible.

I had a thought this morning, how do we feel about books in a franchise like Star Wars or Star Trek that focus on a different time period than the original series? Would those count as spin offs?

I'm still waiting for precise ruling on anthology books. If Jonah's out, Showcase, and others, then I might be truly sunk in my picks. There's so much gray area on all of these. Cei-U!, can we get a final post on the rules and their explanations?

I think I'll just about make it to 12. One thing that helped me was remembering to look at series like Astonishing tales, Amazing Adventures, Marvel Fanfare, Marvel Comics Presents, etc, that often featured characters that had not previously had their own titles.

Cei-U! , can we get a final post on the rules and their explanations? If a series debuted as a feature in an anthology title, like Jonah Hex in All-American Western, it's not eligible, but if the character(s) debuted in another feature and then got their own series in an anthology title, like Warlock in Marvel Premiere, it is eligible. Does that make sense?
Cei-U! Beginning to think I shoulda gone with Favorite Logos!

I'm honestly a little surprised, because I thought the subject and the rules were fairly straightforward. The lack of strips or folks who spun out of strips (Popeye) is my only minor gripe. And it's super minor.

I found the initial set of rules clear, but they don't necessarily align with what the word "spin-off" suggests to many people, which caused confusion. In Television, Star Trek: The Next Generation is something I would call a spin-off of Star Trek despite not featuring any characters from the original series.
The rules clarified we were looking for a particular form of spin-off, specifically for supporting characters graduating to headlining their own series, a la Frasier from Cheers.

If I understand the rules correctly, they have to spin out of another comic book, not a different medium. But you could theoretically justify the later mash-up limited series that combined characters from various iterations that had already been featured in comics.

I was thinking more along the lines of say Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi or Star Trek: Star Fleet Academy which were both set in different time periods but were considered in continuity with the "main" comics.

I think Kurt ultimately ruled that She-Hulk is eligible. She exists within the Hulk universe but was first introduced in her own title. By that logic, I would think a new property set in a universe already established in comics should be eligible. Then again, by that logic, wouldn't every new comic set in an existing comic book universe be eligible? Now I've hurt my brain.

One of my Star Wars ideas works in a more conventional way, with one book picking up a plot thread introduced in another so I may go with that safer pick.
