THE LAST EVER JAMIE AWARDS
It was exactly TEN years ago tonight that this website was registered a little after 9pm, and 117 posts were made before the clock hit midnight. The members and the posting only picked up from there and haven't stopped since.
For ten years now, we have commemorated this moment by honoring the members and discussions from each ensuing year of the CCF's operation that have meant the most to us, and it's been amazing each and every time.
So why is this the LAST EVER Jamie Awards?
Well, over the course of ten years of doing this, three problems have come to light that get a little harder to ignore with each ensuing year:
1. It's really hard to remember what happened before the April 30th cut-off date and what happened after. It's so much easier to remember things by actual year than by CCF year, especially this many years in.
2. With each ensuing year, it gets harder and more time consuming to go back and check which members and discussions have already won Jamies for which you might otherwise nominate them.
3. If we keep going with the Jamie Awards forever, at a certain point we will have named every member of this community "most friendly," "most knowledgeable," "best discussion starter", etc to the point that the awards will no longer have any meaning. Better to quit while they still do.
So my plan after rounding out this tenth anniversary edition of The Jamie Awards is to replace it with something a little simpler that still serves a similar function: perhaps a CCF Year-in-Review Thread each January that invites members to look back and more informally share favorite memories from the past calendar year (not CCF year).
Of course, I'm open to suggestions (but not complaining).
Anyway, FOR THE LAST TIME EVER, a total of ten categories will honor members and threads for their contributions to the community between April 30th, 2023 at 9:22pm EST (the ninth anniversary of the first ever post made at the CCF) and April 30, 2024 at 9:21pm EST (our anniversary, one year later).
A week from today (May 7), two categories will be opened up for nominations. For each category, members will be invited to nominate (not vote upon) one person/thread, including a detailed explanation justifying their choices (please note that, if your nominee wins, what you write in your explanation is what we use in the actual award thread, so please put thought/care into it).
Every three days, new categories will be opened for nomination, and the previous ones will be closed.
Voting will then begin on Tuesday, May 24th and will close on May 31st at 11:59pm EST.
Important:As it has become a sensitive issue for some, a member or thread that has previously won an award should not be nominated for that award again unless, in the past year, they have truly attained a new level of amazing that is particularly worthy of recognition.
So, for example, I won "Best Discussion Starter" in both 2016 and 2017. I've had my fun and gotten my time in the limelight. Thus, unless I do something so supremely significant and different that it is abundantly worthy of additional recognition, I should not be nominated again for the same award (by all means, nominate me for "Best New Member" though ). It's time for someone else to get a turn.
All of our previous award winners can be found in The CCF Hall of Fame.
The Schedule:
May 7-9
Favorite Classic Comic Thread
The Professor Xavier Award: Best discussion starter
May 10-12
Favorite Beyond the Back Issues Thread
The Brother Power the Geek Award: Funniest member
May 13-15
Favorite Original Fiction or Art piece
The Bruce "Brutalis" Hinds Award: Friendliest member
May 16-18
Favorite Review Thread
The Uatu Award: Most knowledgeable member
May 19-21
The Jasper Sitwell Award: new member whose activity has most benefited the community
The Captain Jim Zimmerman Award for best overall member who most exemplifies the spirit of the CCF
May 24-31
Voting!
So now is the time to start trekking through old threads, rekindling old memories, and making some tentative decisions
It's also a time to reflect upon the positive. This is not an opportunity to nominate others sarcastically, get competitive, or put others down. When enough people participate, countless members and threads end up being publicly recognized and appreciated, regardless of who wins. This should be a time of affirmation, not competition. For nine years now, our community has celebrated this event with the utmost class and respect. Thank you for always using this celebration as an opportunity to showcase the best of who we are and what we do.
