Many of you have probably heard about the cover of New Mutants #98 (Deadpool's debut) coming up for sale. $7.5 million is the asking price, though the actual sale price (and I suspect it will sell) will be lower. Heritage Auction is involved in the sale, though not through an auction. It's attracted coverage from CNN and other mainstream media outlets. I'm not a Liefeld art fan, but I have enjoyed the enthusiasm of his podcast (and life), and it's good for the industry to get some buzz beyond its own borders.

I'm planning on putting in an offer for $200. Wish me luck.

Oh wait, they aren't offering to pay $7.5 million for someone to take it off their hands? That seems backward.

$7.5 million? People need to get a sense of proportion. Not saying it should go for ten bucks; but, $7.5 million? Sounds like someone is smoking the "hope-ium!"

There are simply people with too much money.

I sold mine copy back in 2007 for like $125 to raise money to buy the boys an Xbox 360.
Even still Lone Star has an auction CGC 9.8 for $2,900. Ah well it was for the boys and we made a lot of memories gaming together on that console. Jell i still use it to this day.

Honestly, a lot of these just feel like money laundering to me.

The original art market has skyrocketed. For many legitimate reasons, but also for a few sketchier reasons like Slam_Bradley mentioned. Unlike buying a comic book, which is a mass produced commercial product and a copy of original art not an original itself despite the printing, a piece of art (or original art as its called in the case of comic book art) is a one-of-a-kind piece. If you own it, no one else does, which drives some of the prices. $7.5 million is too much to me, but if someone has it, and wants to spend it two own the first art image of a character that has become a bit of a cultural icon ever produced for use, well more power to them. More money than sense I'd say, but I feel that way about a lot of things purchased in this world from luxury brand handbags to sports cars to designer dresses worn for a single event to lots of unnecessary luxury tech items, but I'm not the one doing the spending so I have no say in the matter. -M

If I actually had $7.5 million to spare, I hope I'd give it to charity rather than blow it on something so stupid.
Cei-U! I summon the sorry waste!

It's more than a little obscene that someone would spend that money on a drawing when you consider how may homeless folk or families struggling to feed their kids it could help.

They should hang this thing at the Louvre.

They should hang this thing at the Louvre. Preferably in a sub-basement maintenance room, where even Belphegor couldn't find it.

I guess it’s (funny, fashionable ?) to continue to bash Liefeld and his creations, but he has realized big success with this creation. I find it funny that the same people that lament Jack Kirby never getting a big payout for his part in building the Marvel universe are some of the same people begrudging Liefelds reaping the rewards of his work. You should be cheering him and the post 60-70’s creators that saw some reward for their work and didn’t just get ripped off. Try to be consistent guys. Or maybe it’s a dislike for a person you probably never met. His haters are probably going to flip when they see Avengelyne in a movie by Margo Robbie where he gets a large chunk of the profits.
This is why we can’t have nice things in this world.

Rob doesn’t own the original artwork, so I don’t think he’ll earn anything from this.
