Another perennial children's favorite in Japan -- Doraemon. Not that well known overseas, but one of the most ubiquitous characters in Japanese pop culture (and Japan has A LOT of characters.) It was first adapted as an anime in 1973 and is still going today.

Speaking of famous Japanese animes that are not well-known outside of Japan, this is an absolute powerhouse:
Sazae-san has aired on Japanese television since October 1969 and has never changed its time slot of Sundays from 18:30-19:00. It holds the Guinness record for the longest running animated television series and is often described as the "national anime" of Japan due to the fact that there has never been a major change to the series in more than 50 years. It's basically a slice-of-life, family drama that presents a nostalgic view of traditional Japanese families as seen in the films of Ozu and other directors. The series is so resistant to change that it was the last show to use traditional cell animation. It's also highly unique in the fact that the creator, Machiko Hasegawa, refused to allow any merchandise to made from it.
In Japan, there's a phenomenon known as Sazae-san syndrome which refers to the depression people feel after an episode has finished knowing that the weekend is almost over and they have to go back to work the next day. Thankfully, we have a long weekend this week.

Here's another good one if you like mecha -- Armored Trooper Votoms. This opening is from an OVA.

Some of the very best Japanese anime series are from World Masterpiece Theater, an animation staple on Fuji TV that each year showcased an animated version of a classic piece of Western literature. I watched several of these with my daughter when she was young.
Two of the best adaptations from the 80s were The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Princess Sarah (an adaptation of A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett.) These openings are from different countries because Fuji TV hates YouTube.

Command, one of my favorites from that series was Peter Pan No Bouken. Very cute series Nice. My daughter and I enjoyed Heidi when she was younger. It's directed by Isao Takahata and has contributions from major animators such as Hayao Miyazaki and Gundum creator Yoshiyuki Tomino. I also enjoyed A Dog of Flanders and Marco, 3000 Leagues in Search for Mother.

If you've only seen the English dub of this, you haven't seen the real thing.

Another great Rumiko Takahashi series. I believe this anime gained a fair amount of traction in the States.

I love me some Kidd Video! Such a short lived gem that will sadly never see an official DVD or streaming release. This was a nice fun cartoon that for me as much as I love Transformers, G.I. Joe ARAH and others... is my all time #1 favorite 80s cartoons

Before Dragon Ball there was Dr. Slump, Akira Toriyama's first big hit.
