What comic have you read that was the furthest outside of your wheelhouse, and did you enjoy it?

Honestly a lot of Eisner's graphic novels are well outside my wheelhouse. To the Heart of the Storm, A Life Force, Dropsie Ave. By and large I hate the "slice-of-life" genre. But Eisner is such a master that I can make an exception for most of his works.

I don't know; I've got a pretty roomy wheelhouse, when it comes to comics. I'd say maybe Terry Laban's CUD. I had seen enough samples of the Undergrounds to know that really wasn't my thing; until I got much older. I've never smoked a joint or consumed tons of alcohol, so dope-smoking humor falls flat with me, usually; but, CUD had a nice mixture of stories, from the usual Underground material to weird character comedy and it was funny. I found that I especially liked the Eno & Plum pieces, which got expanded when he moved the book to Dark Horse and eventually collected. They were like a slightly dirty Archie. Hate was another I found I really liked, after I picked up The Bradleys trade collection, from our Bargain Section, at B&N. Again, very funny and some great cartooning. Those got me to try more Underground and Alternative things. I ended up getting The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers (whose comic samples always looked intriguing) compilation because of that. Prior to that, Trashman, by Spain Rodriguez, was about the only Underground I had found interesting. I appreciated the artistry that Robert Crumb put into his work, but his subject matter was rather off-putting to me, apart from some of Mr Natural. Gilbert Shelton was probably a bit more in line with my sensibilities.

Certain biography comics, like Marvel's Mother Teresa...these are exceptions to the norm as I don't usually indulge in them.

Reid Fleming! While I like humor sometimes in addition to my more regular diet of superhero fare, generally I keep it pretty light though I do love the subversive wit of say Giffen’s Ambush Bug.
The World’s Toughest Milkman is not over the top “mature” per se, but a little more than the norm for me yet I think it’s darned witty.

I gave Love and Rockets a shot not too long ago (even did a bit of a discussion thread)I didn't love it, but it wasn't terrible.

Yes! I first enjoyed some Flaming Carrot back in the day, I’ve got the later crossover issue with Reid as well. Just picked up the TMNT appearances as well. Agreed, love it too!

And actually that triggered another 80’s memory for me, Dark Horse’s Concrete. Also very different from my normal books at the time, I found it rather amazing (and still do).

It either seems out of print when I look, or is going for inflated prices on eBay and the like. Perhaps it is too niche (at least as far as Dark Horse is concerned), and I’m not suggesting it’d be an evergreen collection, but it’d be nice if it got a proper release, assuming it hasn’t already.

I hope you’re able to track down! There have been some collected editions, including in the mid-2000’s they did 7 volumes that was pretty comprehensive, but last I checked pricey on the after market and long out of print. They really need fresh printings IMO!

To answer the original question, I didn’t see the appeal of comicbooks based on video games. Why would I want to passively read about a video game character rather than play as them?
But I did enjoy quite a few Sonic the Hedgehog comics I read. He’s probably my all-time favourite computer/video game character, but I’d rather play as him. Or so I thought. There have been some really good Sonic comic stories, and I’d like to read more.

I'm not sure if the Dark Horse collections are in print or not, but they offer a pretty good digital deal -- digital.darkhorse.com/series/61/concreteConcrete is one of a handful of titles where I'm always hoping we'll hear news about a new story. There was a movie in the works in the early 90s but it never came to fruition. In the current climate, I'd love to see a Netflix animated series or even an animated film.
