Since Tomorrow, is Thanksgiving Eve and I wanted to start up a new Thread - Thanking all the Blessings that we've received over the year and wanted share some joy to all of you here. I will be going over to my brother's house for Thanksgiving and later head to my Girlfriend's house for dessert with her family and play cards. We will have the traditional turkey and dressing dinner and I will be heading over to my Girlfriend's house for mincemeat pie. I just wanted to take the time to remind ourselves of Thanksgiving, Football, Good Times, and most importantly spending time with our family, friends, and loved ones in a joyous time of fellowship with each other and that's alone is a testament of our goodwill towards each other. So, I just wanted to start up a thread dedicating to festivity of Thanksgiving ...

I'm still not exactly sure what's happening, but I think I'm going to Grandpa's house.

While it is a day of celebration for some, keep in mind it is a National Day of Mourning for others... National Day of Mournng 2014I have to go back 3 generations (great grandmothers on both sides of my family) to find a full blood in my heritage, but it is a part of who I am, so while I celebrate and take stock and am thankful for many things in my life, I am mindful at what cost those things come at on this day as well. -M

I just wanted to let you know that I changed it from HAPPY THANKSGIVING THREAD to THANKSGIVING / DAY OF MOURNING / REMEMBRANCE to touch base all aspects of today. I just wanted to say thanks for the "heads up" on that. You were right.

*sigh* Not surprisingly, I'm one of those people for whom the major fall/winter holidays are not particularly fun. Thanksgiving seems cursed -- the first one I spent with my future 2nd wife, her grandfather died (he'd been in the hospital for awhile). The great-aunt who more or less raised me died the Saturday after Thanksgiving when I was 12. Two years ago, that was also the day I had to have my beloved cat Howie (first feline I'd had since 1/97) put to sleep because of a bizarrely early case of kidney failure (he was 2 1/2). And of course, considering that my other great-aunt died 12/6 of injuries suffered in a car wreck en route either to or from the Shreveport area a couple of months after I turned 3, I have to assume that we were on the road for Thanksgiving at my father's family's home when a drunk driver ran us off the road.
(Whereas Xmas has been marked by the occasional spate of burglaries, death & suicide. Not to mention, on the day itself when I was 4, my sister's birth -- not a bad thing in itself, of course, but considering how hard a time my mother & [I'm told] father had with her being Down syndrome, not to mention how painful a subject I've always found her condition to be, a bittersweet memory at best. Yay!)

As ever, I'm here to make the rest of y'all feel good in comparison about your lives.
You're welcome. It's the least I can do.

Well, it's only me and my grandfather this year, so while the actual holiday doesn't have an evil history for me, the dwindling family, plus being single, doesn't exactly make my experience a Normal Rockwell painting either, Dan.

I love Thanksgiving but, like most holidays, my wife and I have reappropriated it from the original tradition into something we're more comfortable with. For us, Thanksgiving is a time to put our family first again and also to be thankful for all the we have as we approach the Christmas and Hanukkah season. It helps us to keep our priorities straight, rising above the stress, anxiety, expectation and (for the kids) greed that often dominate the season otherwise.
But the whole celebration of the pilgrims' arrival? No, that makes me uncomfortable. My three year old came home from school yesterday in a construction paper Native American headdress, and I got so upset I nearly called the school. I didn't think we were still trying to convince our children that some great friendship between two people was created on Thanksgiving Day. It could have gone that way, and it should have gone that way, but it didn't.

Spending half my life time actively NOT celebrating holidays it's just a day off from my salary job. The only difference I spend it than I would any other day off depends on my wife's side of the family, since my folks still don't celebrate any. In my younger years I just took these opportunities to work overtime shifts on hourly jobs and put cash in my pocket. And then as M mentioned, this holiday comes at a price, a bloody price, and most Americans are quick to forget that.

I don't do anything for Thanksgiving or any other holidays really. After my dad's gone (hopefully by next Thanksgiving) I'll start going back to me mum's...

Personally, I have nothing but positive feelings regarding Thanksgiving. My grandparents fled Europe in the late 30s to escape the coming of WWII. Without America's existence, who knows how history or my family's fortunes might have fared.
Have a great holiday time, everyone. We all have some things worthy of thankfulness

Without America's existence, who knows how history or my family's fortunes might have fared. Have a great holiday time, everyone. We all have some things worthy of thankfulness I agree. As cheesy and it may sound to some, I believe that the American dream still exists and is obtainable. My parents came to this country in the late 70s, without college degrees, barely speaking the language, and a couple hundred dollars in their pocket. They worked their tails off and were able to buy a modest home in the suburbs and enabled me to be the first in my family to go to college. And even though we were scraping by most times, they still managed to provide me with luxuries like toys and comics. That aspect of my childhood probably explains why I still have such affection for such things. It also blunts some of the disappointment I remember having when they would say "no" to more toys or comics.

Thanksgiving is a holiday I adore. It's about time spent with family, good food, football and counting your blessings and being thankful for everything you have. From me and my family to yours... Happy Thanksgiving!
