Is there a more controversial movie than Pretty Baby which featured Brooke Shields when she 10? I wonder what her parents were on when they approved that script, with those scenes? I saw it when it first came out and I thought it was fantastic. The whole controversy, in my opinion, was about nothing or, if not nothing, was blown all out of proportion. Sure, the subject was dicey--child prostitution-- but it never felt (to me, anyway) exploitative in the way some of its critics claimed.
Then again, I'm relying on 45-year-old memories here so I may be talking out my ass without knowing it.

Brooke's mother (Teri Shields) took a lot of criticism for being exploitive, though Brooke defended her in her own memoirs (though acknowledged her mother's alcoholism and problems with her management of her career). SCTV took a shot, in one sketch..... That's actually pretty tame, compared to some criticism I recall hearing, back in the early 80s. She did get flak over Pretty Baby and the Calvin Klein commercials, when Brooke was 14 and they were featuring her rather provocatively. Kind of reminds me of a poster I printed a couple of weeks ago, for a 16th birthday celebration, for a customer's daughter. There was a photo of her in some kind of spandex uniform that looked like something a dance troupe or NFL cheerleader might wear, as adults; but, I wouldn't let any 16 year-old of mine ever wear! |

It must be the meds I'm taking. I'm setting myself up for lots of blowback.
I actually kind of enjoyed Joker: Folie à Deux when I finally watched it yesterday
Just know in advance it's part musical with lots of bad singing
