I'm with confessor on this. Would you buy a gorgeous vacation island if you could never visit it, but just had images of it to look at? In the same light, what's the point of owning the book if you can't experience the book (unless your primary goal is resale)? I don't see the need to 'experience' a slabbed book when there's another (lower-grade) copy of the same book that can be opened, have the covers folded back on themselves, have pages crinkled or the whole comic itself bent to fit in a back-pocket, scribbled on, stuffed under a bed, crammed into a drawer, shoved in a closet, all without a second thought. And although there might be loads of lower-grade riff raff copies lying just begging for that, the one in the slab gets jeered at. Why is it so hard to accept that sometimes, people just like a high-grade copy of a prized book kept safely stored away in hard plastic?

Why is it so hard to accept that sometimes, people just like a high-grade copy of a prized book kept safely stored away in hard plastic? The issue isn't acceptance; it's understanding. I simply don't get the point of owning a slabbed book that you can never actually take out and experience for sentimental reasons. As an investment, I get it. Otherwise, even car collectors, with garages full of fancy priceless cars, will take each one out for a drive every now and then. I mean, really, couldn't you just photocopy the cover, bag and board it, and have the same experience for a much lower cost? Why does it matter if the book is complete, and the Marvel value stamp hasn't been removed, if you'll never see or touch the interiors anyway?

But I may one day do that. As it is now, I am happy to have it. I have read the story, more than once, in MMW. I have a lot of comics that I also have in TPB or MMW. I bag and board them, and never take them out. It is nice to know that I have them.
Namor is one of my most favorite characters, this is a piece of history, and if I ever come across a crappier copy that I can afford, I will get it and let my sense experience the history.

Keep us posted on what you think? I was going to re-read Transmet, but all the Cerebus talk might make me switch gears.
Also, I'd love a Lois Lane review thread... those covers are just amazing!

When it comes to slabs, I'm all in for cracking them out. Since I don't plan on selling any of my babies any time soon, I want to enjoy them to the fullest. Buying slabs is useful for more expensive books bought online because it helps ensure that you're getting what you're paying for, but once I have them I want to read them! And just to prove I live what I say, here are a couple of my latest acquisitions from last month - probably a couple of the best books I got all year - and the labels from the slabs they previously resided in: The Action Comics is my oldest Superman book to date.

Not purchased, but I brought back some of my old comics from my parents' house, where I stayed over the holidays: some post-Starlin Captain Marvel (Englehart & Moench runs), some Heavy Metals (1978-83 era), Hulk Mags (early black & white issues), some Marvel Previews, etc.

Really nice, hard to believe comics that old could still be in such beautiful condition.

Also, I'd love a Lois Lane review thread... those covers are just amazing! It's, like, I think anyone who was titled as belonging to Superman in some way, got really awesomely hilarious covers. Because Jimmy Olsen has some of the best covers out there as well.

Beautiful books! My son would give his soul for that Cap book. I know there are two very different schools of thought on slabbed and unslabbed. Right now, I'm happy to keep it slabbed. If I ever become unhappy with it slabbed, I'll unslab it.

As far as the story, I didn't find it unimpressive, but not what it becomes after the first volume. The first volume is easy to see it is targeted at being a sword and sorcery parody.
