Ohh man, so envious of any of you guys that are able to have a store like 2nd & Charles. Makes me want to talk the wife into moving out East! Astounding haul mrp. Showcase #55 is a great find, and I see you got a lot of cool stuff like Savage Tales, Grendel, even some Badgers!

I'm curious mrp, what type of value did they give you for your trade-ins? It was a decent, they give you a cash and store credit offer, and the credit is usually in the neighborhood of 50% more than the cash offer. They take market value, condition and their stock level into consideration when making the offer, and take a while to research value on things like vinyl and comics when making their offer (it took them 45 minutes to process the stuff we brought), and will reject some items either because of stock levels or condition. I find offers form Half Price to vary depending on which branch you go to-some give you more for certain types of things than others, but less on certain types of things than other branches, so I kind of go to different Half Price locations (there's 3+ in Columbus, 1 in Greater Dayton) depending on what I am trading in. I had a ballpark number in my head what to expect if I were trading in the stuff I had to a Half Price and 2nd and Charles did better with the cash offer, and the credit was even better than that, but to be fair, they were running a promo that lasts until April 1 of an extra 30% credit on vinyl because their stock was low and they were trying to build their inventory. So I was happy with what I got, even though they did reject about 30-40% of what I brought in (Some due to condition-i.e. they don't take paperbacks that have spineroll/wear and a lot of mine were well read-and some due to stock levels or just being stuff they don't do well with (some of the vinyl I had brought to trade). I am sure that the value will vary by location with them as well, as there are certainly regional variances on what sells, supply, demand, etc. but for the most part I thought their offer was fair considering they have to resell to make a profit. -M

Had one of the most interesting experiences I've ever had as a comics collector this past weekend. I'd seen an ad on Craigslist earlier in the week from a guy who claimed to have around 800K comics in a warehouse just north of Pittsburgh, so I reached out to him and arranged a time for me to go there on Saturday morning. When I showed up, he took me into the warehouse and he wasn't lying; there were boxes as far and wide as the eye could see, and most of them were sorted by title and number, making hunting easy. Turns out, this guy used to own five comics shops in another part of the country, but he shut them down and moved his entire inventory to the Pittsburgh area, where he operates an online and in person (but non-retail) business. He is an Overstreet pricing adviser, worked for CGC for a number of years and graded some of the rarest high-grade comics that ever went through there, and has owned pretty much every key Golden Age book at one time in his life or another. I spent about 4 1/2 hours there, two and a half picking and another two talking with him while he graded each book I'd selected individually, and it was an awesome time. I maybe overpaid a little bit for some of the books, but a quick check of eBay once I got home showed that his prices for the majority of them were right in line with what the market is for them right now. Anyway, this is what I got, with the only things not pictured being a handful of Spectacular Spider-Man issues around #200 that I was missing, but those aren't anywhere near as cool as these books. Woah! Impressive haul! I'm drooling over those Daredevil and Godzilla mags. Do you have the link for this guy's Craigslist ad? Edit: Is this the guy? pittsburgh.craigslist.org/clt/5494048779.html

I just got a shipment from Lone Star with 8 of the Englehart Captain America comics that I'm trying to fill in, along with some Jonny Quests from Comico that my wife has recently gotten into (heh, heh, I'll suck her into comics eventually).
Problem is one of the Caps is in much rougher shape than expected. It's #183 and was graded at 1.5 FR/GD, so I didn't expect it to be perfect, but this is really in Poor condition. The spine is rolled and has several splits in it, the cover is extremely worn and wrinkled (looks like it's been crumpled up) and even has the stereotypical coffee cup ring on the cover. I wouldn't mind that much, but one of the other issues (#179) was listed as 1.0 FR and is in great condition by comparison.
I contacted Lone Star and they are more than willing to take it back and give me a refund (including shipping cost back), but then I have to look for another copy. They have a slightly more expensive 2.0 GD copy, but I'd have to pay shipping costs ($4.95) again.
The comic only cost $1.35, and I'm not a stickler for condition, so I'm leaning towards just keeping it as a place holder/reading copy and maybe find a better copy down the line. It just doesn't seem worth the bother for only $1.35. But I thought I'd get your opinions. What say you?

I am surprised they offered to refund shipping though, in the past I had to pay my own shipping to send the book back, got refunded for the book, then had to pay shipping to get another book. And this was after they sent me a completely wrong book! They have stepped up a bit on quality as of late I think. I believe they are now bagging and boarding everything for free too. I am worried about Mile High Comic's eBay store of late. I purchased a book on March 20th and here it is nine days later and they have not shipped it yet. Their negative reviews are beginning to skyrocket. I wonder what's up. Chuck doing it all himself these days?

Are you kidding me? This place looks like a comic hunter's dream! It was. I barely scratched the surface of what he had to offer, and that still took a full two and a half hours to get through.

I think I'll be making a visit once I can free up some time and some funds.

According to his latest email newsletter, they are catching up with a backlog of orders because they were shut down by a snowstorm last week.

I'd like to spend a weekend or so just rummaging around. I'll just order pizza delivery and sleep on the floor.

Spent a little time in the bargain bins this past weekend and picked up about 90 issues of The Flash for less than $.55 each (taking sales tax into consideration). Nice big chunks of the Waid and Johns runs in that batch, but also a good deal of the Messner-Loebs issues as well.
Went to this little newsstand up by my sister's house today, as we had lunch together, as I had remembered they used to have a bunch of short boxes full of late-'70's/early-'80's goodness, but all of that stuff was unfortunately gone. They had about 8 short boxes of random '90's stuff for $1 each, mostly Image things (including multiple copies of Spawn #1 and #9), so it seemed like a loss except for two books that I grabbed, those being Batman & Robin Adventures #8 (early Harley Quinn appearance, going for about $20 on eBay) and the Mad Love TPB (Harley Quinn's origin), which, depending on the printing, can run upwards of $50.

DD# 131 and #132 made their way into my collection. Speculation seems to be pumping first Bullseye. The copies I got were VG ish and I still paid $45 for the two. I didn't think it was terrible...would have liked a higher grade but I am happy to have it before the TV show features Bullseye and drives the price up.

White Whale Accomplished! Going to WonderCon this weekend was a blast. Aside from meeting my friends and making new ones, the highlight was meeting Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez. Not only purchasing artwork from both of them, I finally took down one of my white whales....
Not only a pristine issue but directly from Jaime himself! Can't get more cherry than that! Had both of the brothers sign it. I can retire from comics now...
Holy Crap! I've never even seen one of them!
