A while back, I bought a run of The Question on Ebay of #1, 3-17. I finally bought #2, so there's probably a binge-read on the horizon.

While I was away on a recent mini-break with my lady, I walked into a big antique and collectibles indoor market and saw this... All the comics were priced at £1 each and, although most of the books were fairly uninteresting (at least to me) late '80s or early '90s DC and Marvel, I did manage to pick up 20 or so issues of Spectacular Spider-Man and Web of Spider-Man that were on my wants list. A day later, I found a tiny little comic shop and splashed out £30 on the treasury-sized Marvel Special Edition: Star Wars #1 and #2, which collects the comic adaptation of the first Star Wars film (originally published in issues #1 - 6 of the regular Marvel series). They're not in great condition, although they aren't too bad either, but issue #1 is signed by Dave Prowse -- Darth Vader himself. Here's the full stash, with a close up of the autograph.

I always thought it was the other way around... that they relased the treasury to go with the movie, and then later cut it up into individual issues of the ongoing for the news stands. Or maybe I am thinking of Planet of the Apes.

Or maybe I am thinking of Planet of the Apes. That's often the case, but with the Marvel Star Wars series, the first issue had an on sale date of April 12, 1977 (Thanks, Mike's Amazing World), a month before the movie opened so the treasury came afterwards because they couldn't put the whole story out before the movie released. The comic was part of the marketing gear up for the movie to make kids aware of it. Usually the adaptations were released as treasuries to capitalize on already released movies popularity with kids, then double dipped as a mini series to keep the revenue flowing. Star Wars was an exception (maybe not the only one, but the most prominent one). -M

Stopped by the local antique mall and browsed around for a bit. Didn't want to spend too much because I am doing Buckeye Con this weekend, but picked up a handful of dollar books: Atari Force 7 Black Hood #3 (from Red Circle Comics w/Alex Toth cover) Captain Victory 10, Special 1 Conan the Adventurer 13 (only need 1 more for this series now) Dakota North #1 Darkhold 8, 10 Dark Horse Presents 68, 69 Ka-Zar the Savage #1 Paul Pope's 100% #2 Terminal City #3 (Dean Motter & Michael Lark) also got a Red Sox Roger Clemens Starting Line Up figure for 50 cents and the Linus Happy Meal toy from the recent Peanuts movie for a buck to add to my Snoopy/Peanuts gang PVC toys. I was really tempted by a vintage Big Track electronic toy and a complete copy of the Star Wars Escape from the Death Star board game, but the boxes were a little beat up on both and like I said I am doing a show this weekend, so I passed on both, but if some miracle they are there next month when I stop back in, I may pull the trigger on them, but hopefully for my wallet, they are gone by then -M

OK, I'm a bit biased, but it's fun.

OK, I'm a bit biased, but it's fun. I had it as a kid and played it whenever I could, but it was given away/left behind in one of the many moves we made when I was a kid. I've been tempted to get a new copy as an adult but most were way out the price range I want to pay. This one was reasonable (only $15), but it was in a glass showcase and I couldn't look to see how the pieces and what not were like, though the tag said complete. Some of the corners were taped and there were patches on the box torn off (like price stickers size tears where it stuck to the cardboard). If I had tracked someone down to get it out of the case, I might have felt more inclined to pull the trigger, so I didn't, but if I hadn't found anything else to get I might have gone back for it today before I left the place. I saw one in slightly better shape a another antique mall on the other side of the country about a month or so ago, and they were asking $75 for it, so the $15 was tempting, and if I weren't goin got a con in a few days I probably would have gotten it. -M

Just got two items in the mail based upon recommendations I've received here:
Elric: The Making of a Sorcerer, and
Love & Rockets volumes 1-3
I'll be getting to them as soon as I finish reading Jungle Action.

Just picked up the Man-Thing run of Adventures Into Fear. I've only read a handful of Manny's here and there, and these aren't the easiest to read, but ok. It finally got better with the third issue, though the art has been good by Starlin (!), Mayerick and others.
A couple issues of Deadly Hands of Kung Fu and the original Buckler run of Deathlok in Astonishing Tales.
