I felt the old itch to get just one more issue of Detective Comics and I looked around on eBay and got this: OMG! I can hardly stand it! The arrow is flying right at his heart! I sure hope Batman doesn't die! It's a little beat up, but not too beat up, and the price was right for how beat up it is.

I wasn't planning on buying any old comics for a while. But all this talk of Queen Bee going on in some of the other threads prompted me to check out her Silver Age and Bronze Age appearances. And I discovered that she really didn't appear that often, something like nine times between her first appearance in JLA #23 and 1985. And I had two of them without realizing it. She's in a two-part Wonder Woman story in Adventure Comics #463 and #464. I own those two issues because of the JSA stories and I probably read the Queen Bee stories back then (I got them in the 1980s as back issues) but I sure don't remember ever reading them. (I read them yesterday and they are pretty dumb. The second part has nice art by Jose Delbo and Dave Hunt.) I went to eBay to see what kind of prices I can expect to pay if I ever decided to get some of her 1970s appearances and I ended up buying these: Action Comics #443 (January 1975) Justice League of America #131 (June 1976) Justice League of America #132 (July 1976) I got them all for $8, though that doesn't include shipping and handling. They're probably kind of worn. I hope they won't be too bad. And I also ordered a pretty beat-up copy of this for only $6: Detective Comics #370 (December 1967) With art by Sheldon Moldoff and Joe Giella. It looks fairly terrible but I have developed quite a fondness for terrible "New Look" stories. And then there's the Dibnys in the backup story! A lot of them are so so dumb, but you never know when you're going to read something wonderful.

God, those are beautiful. Waiting to hear your feedback, Hoosier X.I think it's HILARIOUS that Supergirl was called in to fight the Beasts That Walk Like Men! Green Lantern: "What's that? A gorilla with a yellow super-science gun? An elephant swinging a spiked ball on a chain? A rhinoceros? AND A GIRAFFE WITH A SPEAR?!?!?!?" Flash: "Sue! Call Supergirl! Maybe we can hold them off until she gets here!"

Recently bought the first 12 issues of Peter Milligan's "Shade the Changing Man" based on the praise it has received here.
Plan on getting around to those next week.

We went to the first Cheyenne Comic Con May 13-15. Good weekend, got lots of prints and a couple of autographs. Scott Shaw! didn't have any Alley-Kat Abra pics available, so he drew one while we talked. And got an Alex Ross print of Sam J. Jones as Flash Gordon, signed by Ross and Jones. But amid all the fun stuff, there was one (1) dealer selling old comics. Sigh. Anyway, here's what we picked up -
Arak, Son of Thunder #1 The Fightin' 5 #49 The New Defenders #s 134-135, 139, 143, 146 Superman Family #222 Warlord of Mars Annual #1 ($2 each)
mini- series - Kull from Dark Horse Legion of 3 Worlds Phoenix Without Ashes Son of Vulcan (DC) ($2 each series)
trades - Avengers - Assemble Avengers - The Big Three ($5 each) Battlestar Galactica (Maximum) The Brave and the Bold Milestone The New Avengers - Powerloss The Savage Sword of Conan vol. 20 (Dark Horse) Thor - Season One (half-price) and he threw in Tarzan - The Lost Adventure #1 for free
I've been meaning to put together a New Defenders set; now I've gotten started, maybe I'll actually finish it. The Avengers were for the wife, who loved the movie and is checking out the various eras of the comic. Battlestar Galactica and the Milestone collection were hers, also. (So y'all don't think I picked up a Liefeld book.)

Just taking a shot in the dark, but does anyone know of a good comic shop in Connecticut? I might be taking a day trip and maybe I can pick up some issues to fill some holes.

Just taking a shot in the dark, but does anyone know of a good comic shop in Connecticut? I might be taking a day trip and maybe I can pick up some issues to fill some holes. The three I used to frequent when I lived there were The Eye Opener in Newington, Heroes and Hitters in Rocky Hill and Buried Under Books in Manchester. The owner of Buried Under passed away and it's new owner's renamed the shop A Hero's Legacy Comics and Collectibles in his honor. I haven't been to any of them in 13 years so can't speak to what they are like now, but all 3 are listed in the comic shop locator from Diamond if you want to give them a try. -M

I probably forgot I was interested in it by the next time I ordered a batch of old comics. Besides, I was still focusing on Kamandi and 1970s Detective Comics. I know I don't have those issues already! There's no way I would have forgotten.

As I mentioned in the Latest Acquisitions thread over in the toy forum, we took a trip into Columbus today. I stopped at a Half Priced Books branch I had never been to before to see what they had for their 20% off Memorial Day sale, and stopped at World's Greatest Comics, a great little comic shop I rarely get to because it is on the far side of Columbus from me, but I had talked to the owner at Buckeye Con last month and he told me he had a good selection of Heavy Metal and SSOC in the shop, so checked it out today. We had lunch at a little family owned place called Yogi's Hoagies down the street from the Half Price while we waited for World's Greatest to open (they were all on the same street a few miles apart), then hit the Half Price Books, while there I found this... a gorgeous hardcover in slip case featuring a spotlight on Frank Frazetta's comic book work...normally $50 msrp, was $24.99 minus the 20% sale discount. Also raided the dollar bins (well 80 cent bins today) and finally got the Indiana Jones trilogy (there was no fourth movie) on DVD (to replace the VHS copies we still had)... got a bunch of Astro City issues I didn't have, a Nam #1, Hellstorm #1, a Kubert cover from GI Combat I didn't have and a few other miscellaneous comics. Then went over to World's Greatest Comics where I picked up these mags... which filled in all but 1 issue of Heavy Metal from the 70s and SSOC 1-25 plus a few other holes in the run. I also picked up a bunch of dollar books and a few other back issues there... the Captain Victory #5, Champions #2 and John Carter #18 all completed runs (the Champs was a $1 book, the John Carter was the most expensive issue I picked up-#18 features Frank Miller's first work for Marvel, it was $9 -25% off (all his non-keys-except dollar books) are either green stickered (25% off) or red-stickered (50% off), so it still was a decent deal. #18 was not in his bins, but he went and dug through his overstock to find one for me. I also picked up a handful of DC and Marvel Tarzan issues from his dollar boxes as well... and not a classic, but I picked up a copy of DC Rebirth while there to read it for myself (he was sold out of Scooby Apocalypse though). He also took my name and contact info as I was looking for the rest of the Comico and Dark Horse runs of Jonny Quest, and while he had sold out of his in store stock, he had more in a storage facility he rents, and would look for them for me next time he restocked-which will be for the next Buckeye Con in July, and if he has them he will bring them to the show for me. The other shop I wanted to check out was a new one, but though they are usually open on Mondays, were closed for the holiday, so that was a wash, but we did then head over to Big Fun vintage toys (see the Toy thread for that). All in all, not a bad day's haul... -M
