Went to a local flea market today. Very few comics; only picked up one I read the Secret City books when they came out, but I don't remember much about them, and recent Kirby discussion round these parts has me kinda curious. The thing is, when I got it home and took it out of the bag, I found it was still in the original polybag, complete with card. So now I have to decide whether to open it up and satisfy my mild curiosity, or keep it as a whaddyacallit collector's item? Normally, I'd just rip it open. Comics are for reading, right? But lately I have been buying some books just to have them, usually for the cover. A precedent has been set, eh? So I could just hang on to it as a curiosity (since we all know it'll never be worth anything).

Me too.
I seriously was heartbroken when Topps folded.
A lot of their stuff was pretty good. Thought for sure they'd be a player. Just seems like a natural.

Marvel Team-UP #46: Big deal. But hang on a second. This is a rare 30-cent price variant copy. These were distributed in six select cities in early 1976 to test whether the market would accept a price hike. The practice was repeated the following year and believe it or not, it went largely unnoticed for two decades! It wasn't until 1997 when John McClure presented his research in Comic Book Marketplace that the rarity of these books began to capture the imaginations of collectors, including me. Some estimates posit that 10 or fewer copies of these variants exist, representing the entirety of the Marvel line at that time, but too little is known and it's far too early to state categorically how many are out there. But they are out there and with MTU #46, I've jumped in with both feet. It will be exciting to see how many of these rarities surface as knowledge of their existence becomes more common throughout the hobby.

I bid on several issues of Detective Comics from the 1960s and as I was checking to see the progress - I got about three books that I haven't yet been outbid on - I saw that Detective Comics #292 was about to go for $17.50. So I bid on it with 20 seconds to go and got it for $25. I don't normally bid on things at the last second like that but I got a look at that giant Batman on the cover and I couldn't bear to see it go for $17.50! (And it's happened to me a bunch of times!)

I didn't notice that Batwoman is in it! She's so tiny! You can barely see her in the Bat-Mobile!
My cup runneth over.
I also won Detective Comics #310 in VG/F. Bat-Mite is in it!
And I'm waiting to hear about #336 and #390.

Super Friends #37, guest starring Supergirl. I love that series, it always cheers me up to read an issue.

Drove a few miles north to Dahlonega today to look through a several thousand book collection at an antique store. The comics ranged from the late-60s to about the mid-00s, were nicely organized, and yielded a couple of gems: Champions #14 & 15 were three bucks a piece. I've wanted to read that story for years thanks to Swarm being mentioned here, and it did not disappoint. Also found high-grade copies of Warlock #1 and 11 for $10 and $5 respectively. I'd call that a bargain! To my utter astonishment, the seller had the 30-cent price variant Doctor Strange #17 neatly graded and slabbed for my convenience! We haggled and I overpaid slightly for it, but after the great deal on the Warlocks, I didn't mind much.

Detective Comics 292 was a fun story to read and it's was kind of different and gave it a different feel of things. I thoroughly enjoyed how the story flows and it's was unique by itself.
mrp - I loved that Supergirl Darwyn Cooke doll too.
Phil Maurice - Great Pickups and I was surprised to see the Marvel Team Up #46 with the price tag of 30 cents - that cool!

I went to visit the In-laws this weekend in Kingston, and went to a garage sale nearby. Thought I would find 50 cents comics, put the guy is apparently a dealer and had an insane collection. He only showed me 3 or 4 short boxes (out of a hundred), but he said whenever I'm in Kingston I could call him. Got four comics - Red Mask 1 (1958 Reprint) - Batman 194 ( little water damage on cover and first page) - Black Magic Series 8, #2 - House of Mystery 101
