The House of Mystery #205 is, in my opinion, the most amazing cover from that series. Finally some love for Jack Sparling! I don't know why he gets a bad rap from a lot of fans.

I don't know much about him, but I do have a nice copy of House of Secrets #97 I got for 50 cents a couple years ago, and I think the cover is great. Not my copy:

Got a care package from Icctrombone yesterday. Had a chance to sort through it and here is the haul... including issues of Alien Worlds, All Out War, Dark Horse Presents, Doomsday Squad (including the Usagi back-up), Echo of Futurepast (including Confessor's evil doppelganger Bucky O'Hare), Forbidden Tales of Dark Mansion, From Beyond the Unknown, Futurians, GI Combat w/Kubert cover), Give Me Liberty, Silver Age Hawkman, Marvel Premiere featuring Satana, Ms. Tree Quarterly, Occult Files of Dr. Spektor, Our Army at War with glorious Kubert covers, Our Fighting forces featuring the Losers (part of the Kirby run and a few post-Kirby issues), Red Circle Sorcery, Sgt. Rock again Kubert-c), Twisted Talesm Unexpected, and the World of Wood. Some closer looks... pleasantly surprised to discover the second issue of DHP had the first installment of Ed Bruabaker and Jason Lutes The Fall. just some of the creative talent collected there: Kirby, Kubert, Wally Wood, Gray Morrow, Dave Stevens, John Bolton, Frank Miller, Stan Sakai, John Byrne, ave Cockrum, Ed Brubaker, Jason Lutes, and more I am forgetting. Lots of comic goodness to revel in here. Thanks ICC! -M

I see Our Fighting Forces #152, A Small Place in Hell, one of the best war comics ever!

War comics are one thing I've almost completely ignored in my reading career that I ought to rectify one of these days.

War comics are one thing I've almost completely ignored in my reading career that I ought to rectify one of these days. I had one issue of Combat Kelly and one issue of G.I.Combat as a kid, but until Marvel launched the 'Nam when I was in high school, I hadn't read much in the way of war comics. In the late 90s when I started exploring things like Safe Area Gorazde by Joe Sacco, Fax from Sarajevo by Joe Kubert, and Last Days in Vietnam by Eisner, I started to really get into different genres where war and conflict were central to it, and into Kubert as an artist and this led me to explore more and more of the genre. It's like any genre in comics though, there's some great stuff in it, and a lot of crap. Codystarbuck has a great thread on war comics going that is worth checking out, and Confessor already mentioned Charley's War (which I still need to check out), but I would say look into stuff by Kubert, Glanzman and a few others to get a taste and see what you like and don't like. I am not much of a fan of Garth Ennis's stuff in general, but his war comics are fantastic too. It's not a genre for everyone, but no genre is, and there are a lot of good comics in the genre. -M

And don't forget Battle Comics from Atlas! Seventy issues in the 1950s. #15 has a Russ Heath story where a German soldier shoots Hitler in the face! And the last few issues of Battle were published before Fantastic Four #1, but Jack Kirby is there, contributing to most of the last few issues. Including "A Tank Knows No Mercy" in #70, inked by Steve Ditko. I've never read #68. But look at that cover! Who knows what wonders await inside!

I love Combat Kelly from the 70s Marvel series. Definitely recommend that short run. My spree continues...I love these old calendars. This will be my second one. And this is an upgrade on the rough copy I had

traded in a half dozen books to Lonestar to get some credit and placed a small order to fill in some holes in some runs or finish off some short run series. Books should arrive later this week and I'll post pics when they do, but picked up...
Battle of the Planets: Princess #4 (only issue of the Image series my wife was missing, she's a bigger BoTP fan than I am and loves the Alex Ross BoTP stuff)
Conan: The Scarlet Sword #3 (these post Conan the Adventurer Marvel Conan minis are tough to find. I've had #1 & 2 for over 5 years now and haven't seen #3 in the wild ever)
Conan The Usurper #1 & 2 (same deal, I've had #3 for a while and never see 1 and 2)
Echo of Futurepast #2 & 6 (combined with the stuff I got from ICC, that finishes off this anthology series)
New Talent Showcase #19 (Darwyn Cooke's 1st published work)
Star Hawks Vol. 1 (from Tempo Books) I love this Ron Goulart/Gil Kane space opera comic strip and I fondly remember the Tempo Books paperbacks from Scholatic Book fairs as a kid, so I snagged this)
Star * Reach # 1, 4, 5, 7, 15 trying to complete this series but rarely see them in the wild any more
Swords of Valor #2 & 3 (four issue fantasy anthology, mostly reprints, I stumbled on #1 a year or so back because it had a Frazetta cover-as does #2, and #3 features a Walt Simonson drawn story), still need to find #4.
Valor #1 (Gemstone EC reprint, was in the $1 sale at Lonestar and I had picked up most of the rest of this reprint series at Half Price last month, so snagged it)
Wild Cards Book II-IV (prestige anthology series form Marvel/Epic adapting the George RR Martin edited super-hero anthology series, I've had #1 for a while and these were also in the $1 issue sale so filled out rest of the mini).
Nothing terribly exciting or key in terms of collectibility, but some fun reads and knocking off some series from the want list.

I do actually have three war comics, though - one copy of GI Combat, one copy of Weird War Tales, and one copy of World at War. At heart, I'm really a fan of colorful spandex, but I will check out some war stuff, too.

My wife was placing an Amazon order this morning that included a lot of add-on items and needed to order something directly form Amazon to make it work, so told me to pick out a trade to get to make the order go, so I ordered this... Vol. 3 of the Silver Age JLA series (I have vol 1 and 2 already) collecting JLA #20-30 including the first JLA/JSA cross-over (which I have only read 1 part of as I used to own a copy of JLA 21 beat up but readable but it was lost years ago and I never read the conclusion of the story). It was an unexpected purchase, but I look forward to getting this collection. -M
