Went to a Local Comic show in New Jersey and scored the two Thor books that I was missing. I was especially happy because it was less than eBay had it for. Number 207 was asking for high prices because of a Halloween crossover with some DC characters, I think. They both came out to half the price that are on the covers, 8 bucks in total. Congrats, man! I know you've been chasing this goal for a while now, so it must feel great to have finally completed it. As for my purchases, I, like @mrp, went to Half-Price Books and picked up that same Jonah Hex book today as well for 50% off. I've been trying to read some different things lately (such as Challengers of the Unknown), but I've never read many Western books, just a handful of the old Marvel Two-Gun Kid issues. For $10, however, I'll give this a shot, and if I don't like it, I can probably resell it on eBay for enough to make my money back.

How much did it come out to at the end for that prize ?

I'm glad you gentlemen both got the Hex showcase. How much did it come out to at the end for that prize ? I paid $10.70 for it ($20 price - 50% off + 7% sales tax). At 500 or so pages, that works out to a fraction over $.02 per page. Ours had it priced at $30, so with coupon it was $15 plus tax. $30 seems to be their standard price for OOP Showcases though, Batman Vol. 2, House of Mystery Vol. 1, Sgt. Rock Vol. 1 and a few others were also priced at $30. Other Showcase volumes that were more readily available were priced at either $9.99 or $8.49 depending what the original msrp was ($19.99 or $16.99). It's hard to figure how they decide to price "collectibles" vs. regular stock at this branch. A few months back they had gotten in a number of Spirit Archives volumes, some were priced at $100 per volume and some $24.99 (half the $49.98 msrp). Most vintage paperbacks are priced at $2-$3, yet others go for $5 and then suddenly you will have something like a Wild Cards volume, a Magic: The Gathering novel, or an odd movie adaptation that is priced anywhere from $10-$30 in the same spinner rack. But then this is the HPB that has a copy of Uncanny X-Men #300 signed by John Romita Jr. in the nostalgia showcase priced at $300, so there is little rhyme or reason to their pricing structure. I pretty much ignore anything they price as a "collectible" because their prices are so out of whack, but there are bargains to be found among their other stock. -M

10 bucks is a good price. I usually won't pay more than 5 bucks for a Black and White Showcase or Essential, but when you really want something , it's okay to pay more.

I've talked with him many times, and he knows his stuff; his personal collection is over 40K comics. To that end, he tends to price most of the comics/TPBs pretty close to market value. I checked the price on this Jonah Hex book on eBay and it is going for anywhere between $13 and $23 with shipping, so $20 is on the high side but not unreasonable, particularly with the coupons they put out. They recently had a copy of Alan Moore's "Lost Girls" in the collectible area, and it was just about spot-on with eBay pricing, and they are pretty close on hardcover Marvel Masterworks as well (although they do run a little higher on the OOP ones than I would like).

Went back to Half Price Books for the final day of the coupon sale. Used my 50% coupon on this... I used to have that Jonah Hex Showcase, but I liked it so much that I eventually sold it and decided to purchase copies of the actual issues that it collects instead. I'm currently only missing about 3 or 4 issues of Weird Western Tales to replicate the contents of that Showcase. I'm a big Jonah Hex fan, and his early appearances in All-Star Western and Weird Western Tales are, for the most part, very enjoyable. I think that Showcase volume makes a strong case for Jonah Hex being one of the best things that DC were publishing at the time. In addition, Tony DeZuñiga's artwork looks really, really nice in that volume...the starkness of the black & white art suits the setting well, so that's a nice bonus. Also, as you read through, it's interesting to see how Hex's character changes in the early issues. In his earliest All-Star Western appearances, John Albano writes him very much as a tragic figure: a disfigured gunfighter, with a heart of gold, who was shunned by society for the way he looked. However, this charaterisation soon gives way to a classic bounty hunting anti-hero, with a tough exterior and an unerring sense of right and wrong. Then, beyond this Showcase volume, Jonah's character softens further, as he becomes something of a one man A-Team: righting wrongs and settling scores for the defenceless, abused and exploited -- very often for free. Also, some of Hex's early appearances in Weird Western Tales have a slightly supernatural-flavoured "weird west" vibe to them, as the title of that comic might suggest. But this aspect of the stories is quickly abandoned in favour of good old fashion Wild West grittiness and action. Hopefully you guys will enjoy your copies of the Jonah Hex Showcase. It's got some damn good stuff in it, as far as I'm concerned.

I think that Showcase volume makes a strong case for Jonah Hex being one of the best things that DC were publishing at the time. While their were definitely down periods, for the most part Jonah Hex was always one of DC's strongest books. That was particularly so during the early years of the book. And while I certainly wouldn't have said so at the time, upon further review, DC's best books during most of the 70s and at least into the early 80s tended to be their non-superhero books. Jonah Hex, Kurbert's Tarzan (most of the early DC ERB books were readable with great art), Warlord, The Shadow, Plop, Chaykin's short run stuff (Ironwolf, Fafhrd & the Gray Mouser). Even a lot of the better stuff that is closer to being super-hero work is more superhero-adjacent than being pure super books (Kamandi, Swamp Thing).

Whoda thunk it. A green rabbit liking a comic book with a green cover?! Cannot say enough good things about the Jonah Hex series overall and particularly the 2 Showcase Presents editions. Hex is the very best American version of an Italian Western to be found in comic book format. Dezuniga's artwork is astounding and one of the best artistic interpretations of the West I have seen. He captures the stark contrasting desert with the dirt, grime and sweat inherent with living in the West. And his design of Hex makes for a gunfighter NOBODY should want to ever deal with let alone confront with drawn guns.
