The colors on both the Thor and Superman issue covers from the late 60s are fantastic. I love that one posted earlier where Galactus is reaching down on Thor like he is a little creature.
I just got the second Conan Omnibus today for Christmas, so that I am looking forward to checking out. They put in tons of back matter on the first one, which made it such a nice package.

Cmon bro, post some pix of those great books. Oh if only I could my brother from another mother! As said before, since I post from work, the hospital will not allow site access for downloading/saving pictures and posting to the CCF due to encryption and computer server protection. Maybe one day. That is why all my posts and writings are image-less. P.S. Congratulations upon all of your Thor purchases this year (and especially this December) Icc as I know well the thrills and fun derived from the waiting and hunting and buying of a series you adore. your taste and mine run similar in many things and I get chills when I see your buy pics are posted!

Thanks man. Yeah, I really didn’t pay as much as you would think. On eBay the prices are so varied. I’m okay with low grade books.

The second half of my Christmas present (to go along with the Batman omnibus) showed up in the mail today. It was a Justice League doorstop, I mean Silver Age Omnibus Vol. 2... seriously, look at the size of that thing... it's a doorstop or a murder weapon in the game of Clue. Professor Plum did it with the Justice League Omnibus in the conservatory... -M

I also made a run out to Half Price Books for their Boxing Day 20% off sale. I had some Christmas money and a few bags of books I wanted to trade in, so I drove out after work this afternoon and picked up the following: two Showcase volumes... Aquaman Vol. 3 (I had 1 & 2 already) and the only Green Arrow volume they published. Vol. 4 and 5 of the Superman Chronicles... I had Vol. 1-3 which contain the same material as the new Golden Age Superman Omnibus Vol. 1. I had been considering getting the second omnibus to pick up where those left off, but saw these, and they were much less expensive than the omnibus (and aren't as big as a doorstop). I picked up Vol. 2 and 4 of the Giffen/DeMatteis era of JL... I had found Vol. 1 and 3 at Ollie's a year or so ago on the very cheap and these were reasonably priced with the 20% discount too. a volume collecting the Greg Rucka era (early 2000s) Detective Comics run...Batman: New Gotham Vol. 1 it had been on my radar for a few months now (along with Vol. 2) and it was cheaper than Amazon here, so I pulled the trigger. I didn't get many single issues, but they had some pre-made sets, and among them I found these two sets for $5 each Ostrander's Manunter 7-12, and 13-18. they also had 1-6 in a set but I had those issues. I needed 5 of the 6 in each set, so it worked out to less than a buck an issue after the 20% discount so was okay getting the doubles in the sets. I also found a pair of comic based novels... a GL novel by Christopher Priest (part 1 of a trilogy I believe) and a Books of Magic novel. I did not know there was a Books of Magic novel before I saw it on the shelf today. Now I need to do a little research and find out if there was more than one Books of Magic novel... That's it for the comics, but I did pick up a few more comic-related genre novels, a couple of Fleming Bonds... a passel of Conan pastiches and REH's Skullface... a Dr. Who novelization... and a three of the 5 Tarzan novels I didn't have... I also picked up 1 DVD, not comic related, but a movie I saw several times but hadn't seen in a decade and had been jonesing to see again for some odd reason, Mickey Rourke and Robert De Niro's Angel Heart. All in all, not a bad Boxing Day haul for me. -M

So I found that yes, there were more than one Books o Magic novel, but they are all adaptations of story arcs form the comics...
so the one I got today adapts the initial 4 issue mini-series (which made Day 1 on the 12 Days of CCF Christmas for me this year)

I have three local comic shops in my town, and I patronize all of them-- primarily for back issues & supplies, since I haven't had a hold box or new book pull list since 1996. One shop in particular has an annual sale between Christmas and New Years Day, and it's a big one. There are specials all over the store, but the one that I usually exploit is the 50% off ALL back issues. Luckily, it's not a "jack-the-price before discount" scheme(like a certain online dealer that we know of )-- it's truly 50% off the marked price on the book. Anyway, I ended up making a rather large purchase (around 75 books in all) so I'm not going to bother scanning/posting everything for obvious reasons. However, I will say that I was able to complete a few runs where I was missing only a handful of books. Here's one that I picked up, because the price was stupid-low:
And one other-- I just scanned these right in the bag, so the waves you see are the bags, not the books. I picked up a ton of the mid-60's Jumbo Marvel reprint titles (Marvel Super-Heroes, Marvel Tales, Marvel Collectors' Item Classics, Marvel Fantasy Masterpieces), and I am now VERY close to completing each of these series. These books all came out of a collection that the shop had purchased, and they were in beautiful condition for square-bound books-- most of them at least 6.5 or better condition-- no crushed spines or cover splits, no missing pages or coupons, only the occasional soft corner, rust stain or (in the case of this one) minor corner fold.
And yes, I paid a whopping $7.50 for this book...
And one more from the haul-- paid $5.00 for this one... again, the waves in the pic are the bag, not the book.

I had that Atom Showcase but in much worse condition, and the Marvel Super-Heroes one-shot. I think the earliest Marvel Tales I had was #4 or 5. I had all but one of the Fantasy Masterpieces, even the first two non-giant ones with the monsters/aliens stories. I remember seeing Marvel Tales #1 & 2 for sale in comic shops, just at higher prices than I wanted to pay. I still have an instinctive reaction to paying much for a 'reprint', even an old one. I got those 25 cent giants from Marvel and DC (and even Tower) at around $2 on average in the early-mid '80s. I think there was a craze for collecting giants sometime after that, but they were sort of passed over by most collectors I found before that.

Even today, that Marvel Tales #1 "Annual" commands a fairly high price in reasonable condition. I'm still on the hunt for that one. On the other hand, I picked up #2 in the aforementioned sale for $5.00, and it's in comparable condition to the ones I pictured above... certainly couldn't say "no" to that one, reprints or not.
The other thing is, apparently classic reprints are back in vogue (see Marvel's current True Believer series, and DC's occasional "replica book" offerings). I don't expect the 60's reprint anthologies to get any cheaper.

Wow! What a great haul, tartanphantom. I have some of those comics; that's probably my favorite era for collecting (I'm not fussy, for 1950s-1960s comics as long as the comic is intact and not falling apart I'll usually buy it ). ...Even today, that Marvel Tales #1 "Annual" commands a fairly high price in reasonable condition... The Bullpen photos in that comic are priceless (likely adding to the $$$ of this issue). I was very happy when I snagged a copy a few years ago, good price, pretty good condition.

Yeah, great job of shopping, tartanphantom! I pretty much can't buy comics anymore, so I love living vicariously through you folks.
