The FFs look NM They were listed as 9.4 on eBay, but I have not received them yet. It is a seller I have bought from in the past so I am sure they are pretty nice...scans of the back covers are nice and white.

The FFs look NM Hard to tell without high resolution pictures and adequate lighting, take a look at this one:
This is from a comic graded as VG/FN, but you could pass it for a NM, specially if you put it inside a bag (as some eBay sellers do).
Not saying they aren't, just that they could range from 9.4 all the way down to 5.0.
You are so right, it is very hard to tell by pictures alone, with the right lighting and angle a comic can easily appear better than it actually is. I have seen some front covers that looked almost pristine but when I have asked the seller for a back cover scan I am sometimes shocked at the dirt or foxing!!

Fred Hembeck, anyone?Went to one of my local shops yesterday to pick up some bags & boards, and stumbled upon these... I'm a long-time fan of Hembeck's quirky satire, and have been trying to complete my run of the Fantaco collected works of his cartoons. Yesterday's purchase leaves me just one book away from completion.

Those are nice tartanphantom, I honestly never heard of these before. I especially like the New Teen Titans cover.

Awesome! Those FF's I bought on the newsstand not much more than a year after I'd started collecting comics. #184 in particular brings on some nostalgia. I used to have Dennis the Menace digest size comic (sadly now gone - thanks to my wife) and it did have one story in it where Dennis went to Hawaii. I don't remember the comic that well now, but I used to read that thing once a year, every December. I used to love that thing. Unfortunately, I don't even remember the name or number of it. When I googled Dennis the Menace digest size comics, nothing rang a bell.

There are 2 great collections listed on Amazon for those lovers of Fred and it makes it easy to have most of his good stuff. I have both and greatly recommend them! And I did have all 7 of his earlier large sized books but somewhere they are either boxed away or lost. Either way having the 2 omni makes reading some Hembeck quick and funny! Great Bathroom reader if you know what I mean!

FF #184 has the distinction of being the comic book that has been in my collection the longest. I got it for Christmas, 1977 in one of those sampler packs. I think the other two were a John Carter and a Peter Parker, long since lost. Yours is a really nice copy.

I'm working on this run also, as well as continuing on past it with the sporadic stories in later issues.

I'm working on this run also, as well as continuing on past it with the sporadic stories in later issues. It's such a great series. It was pointed out here recently that reading multiple stories back-to-back reveals a sort of sameness. I've found that to be true, so I am pacing myself. I'm missing Our Army at War 153 & 155, Showcase 57, and Star-Spangled 142-145, but I don't mind a little friendly competition . Good luck with your search!

Have the Showcase Presents Enemy Ace (oh such sweet B/W Kubert artwork) and fell in love with the Hammer of Hell again. Had a few stories as backups over the years & really liked the WW I setting & the honor & truth of the reality of war. Inspired me to get reader color copies and managed to find them all under $5 apiece over the last year thanks to local & MyComicshop.com. Well worth the effort!

I have the Showcase too, and love those stories. I lucked into a small bunch of low grade Enemy Ace appearances in Showase & SSWS at a second hand store last fall... I still have the doubles available in my stack of stuff to get to for the Classic Comic Exchange once I finish the refurbish of the comic room and get everything sorted and in place. I might have a couple of the ones you need Phil Maurice if you are interested. Most are in Good at best (but I couldn't pass them up at $2 a pop no matter what the grade was). -M
