I know this has probably been done before but it's always fun! If you were chosen to be the next writer of the Justice League comic(any incarnation - it's almost Convergence time!), who would you pick for the roster?
My picks:
Superman Batman Wonder Woman Green Lantern(Hal) Flash(Barry) Aquaman Black Canary Green Arrow Atom Hawkman Zatanna Firestorm(Ronnie/Jason combo) Vixen Vibe(New 52 version) Dr. Light(Kimiyo) Steel Black Lightning Captain Comet

Are we given a team member limit? If we are I'll use a 12 person rotation.....
1. Batman (co-team leader) 2. Superman (co-team leader) 3. Wonder Woman (co-team leader) 4. Big Barda (weapons and heavy hitter) 5. Mister Teriffic (science and tech) 6. Sebastian Faust (magic specialist) 7. XS (speedster, time displaced from the future and Flash legacy) 8. Shayera Thal Hawkwoman (Power, Speed) 9. Doctor Will Magnus (science and tech) 10. Squire/Beryl Hutchinson (communications expert) 11. Soranik Natu (Green Lantern member) 12. Voodoo (Telepathy, Shape Shifting)
Base of Operations: Gotham City in a Wayne Corp funded Justice Leaque building ala Stark Tower
Here's a breakdown on why I chose (if you're still reading, good for you). I choose a team of characters that are not only partially iconic, but I went with a team of people that are on par with the usual Justice League stereotypes and well deserve a spotlight
- Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman... you got to have the Big 3. - Big Barda: There's tons of male heavy hitters and so few female powerhouses. I could've gone with Power Girl, but that'll be 2 Kryptoians on the team. Big Barda brings in otherworldly and cosmic to the team. - Mister Teriffic: I like Michael Holt ever since John Ostrander introduced him The Spectre. One of the smartest men in the DCU; I'm taking a page from Morrison's run... the team needs thinkers and not all hitters. - Sebastian Faust: Going against the much popular Zatanna, my choice for the son of Felix Faust is a great pic here. More or less the dark horse of the team, his knowledge of magic is strong in his position. - XS: I love XS from the Legion. Being the granddaughter of Barry Allen, I wanted to promote a strong and somewhat inexperienced speedster and make her a stronger character. - Shayera Thal Hawkwoman: Of all the Hawkwomen, Shayera Thal's my favorite of them. Like Barda, another warrior. Nice to have 3 lady powerhouses. Also a good quartermaster - Doctor Will Magnus: Again, a big outside the box pic here. Could've gone a Ray Palmer here but Doc Magnus is smart a hell and tech savvy. Also have a character that's bipolar creates some tension on the team. - Squire: Another character that I enjoy. Morrison gave her so much depth and complexity, and she's a computer wiz... good communications person. - Soranik Natu: While I generally loath anything Green Lantern, I had to represent the Corps. Instead of going with the usually main Lanterns and the popular smaller Lanterns, I do think Soranik Natu is a cool Lantern. Also having an alien on the team go where J'Jonzz would've gone - Voodoo: A Wildstorm character and a cool character. Telepathy and Shapeshifter... J'Jonzz replaced.

Now that I think about it, I'd rather have Michael Holt on my JLA team than Batman.
Cei-U! I summon the blasphemy!

Limiting myself to 7 because . . . well, because -
Supergirl (pre-Crisis) - Superman doesn't need this team Mr. Terrific - Batman isn't a team player (thank you, Cei-U) Barda - I don't think Wonder Woman works well with superheroes Hawkwoman or Owlwoman - tech or magic, can't decide Jesse Quick - speedster and legacy character Black Lightning - long-distance zapping (and let's pay Tony Isabella something this time) Metamorpho - outcast type w/flexible powers and light attitude

I'll also limit it to seven because more than that it becomes difficult to tell stories about characters instead of having plot puppets moving through the motions to flesh out requisite fight scenes month after month. Preferring a tight knit core of 7 that appear month in and month out in the book, with the big guns (i.e. the Trinity) as reserves only to be called in as needed.
Martian Manhunter Black Canary Green Arrow Hawkgirl Green Lantern (John Stewart) Vixen Dr. Fate
operating out of the Tower of Fate as HQ...

I've got 21 because my dream Justice League of America comic will be coming out every week. My artists will be Tom Grummett, John Byrne, Dan Jurgens and Jerry Ordway. Jose Luis Garcia Lopez will drop in for those pesky fifth weeks.

Both justicefreak and Action Ace teams has a Justice League Unlimited feel and nothing wrong with that. You got! I always liked a bit of a rotating cast. After all not all the heroes would be able to respeond to all the emergency calls all the time. Makes more sense having different people there at different times.

This is the same way I would do it, though I am going with 9 members. One of the main reasons JLA has never really appealed to me that much compared to Avengers is that it usually feels very plot driven to me since most of the main characters have their own titles and are big iconic characters. I prefer character driven action, and there's only so much you can do when your team is a bunch of corporate symbols. Having said that, though, I also find it hard to really consider the team to really be the Justice league if it doesn't have those members, so it's a bit of a damned if you do, damned if you don't problem. My solution, like mrp, is to have the big iconic characters like Trinity show up as regular guest stars, while focusing on a regular roster that allows for more character work. I also have certain theories on how teams should be put together. First, there needs to be a good mix of powers - not too much duplication, with powers that are visually interesting and work in ways that open up story possibilities. Beyond that, the characters themselves need to be a good mix in terms of personality styles; there should be potential for drama, humor, romance, etc. in the way the team interacts. There needs to be chemistry. My favorite teams also have what I think of as a focal character, a leader who embodies the team. The Avengers don't feel right without Captain America. For me, Cyclops is the leader of the X-Men. Mr. Fantastic is the leader of the Fantastic Four. When these characters are absent, even if others are filling the leadership role, the teams don't quite feel right - they feel unfocused to me, without a center. I've always kind of had this issue with the Justice League. Even Superman doesn't really fill this role - he's a role model, and their most powerful member, but he's not really the leader. He's not the driving force. Historically, the JLA has always felt kind of like a committee of heroes more than a team, if that makes sense. And I think it has suffered as a result. But, in thinking about how I would do a JLA book, I realized that the JLA does have a member who could fill the kind of central leadership role - the Cap, the Cyclops, the Mr. Fantastic of the team. That character is Black Canary. So I started with that - Dinah as my leader - and built out from there, filling in what hopefully is a good mix of powers and personalities. I think there are a couple elements missing that I would like - there's one power duplication that might not work great story wise, and the team is maybe lacking a hothead - but I see a lot of potential for some very interesting interactions. So, my team: Black Canary - team leader Power Girl - I can't believe nobody else picked her! Martian Manhunter Tomorrow Woman Flash - Jay Garrick The Shade Zatanna Dr. Mid-Nite Oracle - support
