I'm currently (re)collecting the OHBotMU in TPB form and had a question. I was under the impression that the trades were in fact collected reprints of the original from '82-'83? I see that Angel, Jean and Cyke are in their X-Factor togs, Hank isn't furry, etc. so I think I'm missing something. Is volume 1 collected? What's the deluxe edition?
I'm guessing the "update" edition was for characters that changed, John Walker becoming USAgent etc. I'm asking here because I don't trust Wiki's and would rather confer with the experts.

I've read that Simonson brought a brattyness to the group, maybe that was it, I too am a Claremont fan. Blevins work always seemed to look like a hallucination or viewed through a fun house mirror! Yeah, I think that was it. They were constantly arguing, and about petty things. I like Blevins a lot, just not for this book (though Gosamyr was quite nice looking...) Also Magik! By the time I met Illyana she was de-aged, and later of course got sick. I'm reading the mini series as well.

One of my favorite series. I was a teen when they first came out and the realistic, human elements really resonated with me. The Claremont run is classic. I'm less fond of the Simonson era (and I don't own them any more). I don't remember specifically what I didn't like about the writing, other than it wasn't Claremont, but I remember feeling that Bret Blevins was not the best fit for the book artwise. Also it was soon on to the X-Factor/Mutant Massacre/Fall of the Mutants era where I parted from Marvel entirely. You're in for some great stuff for about fifty-odd issues, though, don't worry. Fantastic four #286, featuring the return of Jean Grey, certainly broke my comics collector's heart. That issue made it abundantly clear that all the emotional attachment I had invested in these make-believe characters had been utterly wasted, and that they were not characters... They were products, meant to be used and misused any which way, with no respect for readers or past creators, as long as there was a buck to be made. My willing suspension of disbelief died right there, and I stopped reading comics for more than a year. Well said! I believe we've touched on this before!

Finally! I have a few TPB's all set and looking forward to digging in. Obviously I know a lot of what's going to happen but "seeing" it on panel for the first time will be fun, as well as reading Claremont and Weezie apply their craft to this classic book. To see a skinny jug eared Sam Guthrie, Dani, Shan, (who were all out of the x books when I started in '92) and all the Xavier Nm's together on page is a real treat. I admittedly can't help but feel pangs of sadness as I know how its going to "wrap up" nine years later in all its "90's Kewl Liefeldian Glory". The sense that the final year was a spring board to another book never sat well with me either.
I'm aware that a big thing involved in its dimise was that Bob Harras really seemed to side with the "hotshot artist and his plots" thing that seemed to permeate all the X-books (Lee, Portacio, Liefeld)
Anyway, I'm enjoying myself nonetheless. Would love to hear from others who loved the series and your thoughts on it.

Is Vibe from Justice League of America (Detroit) ... I just can't stand his character on the JLA/JLD. I remember reading how much George Perez disliked him as well, him being Hispanic and Vibe being a tired stereotype

Love these reviews! Are these early issues collected? I'd love to even get my hands on some readable issues as well. Thanks

What's your favorite iteration of the character? Original green? Savage? Gray, or Professor? In order: 1. Original. 2. Gray. 3. Professor. I found the Savage Hulk became boring quickly. Agreed. The whole petulant child, leave me alone thing could wear quickly. I enjoyed the professor but he was almost too powerful, didn't have any of the "checks" the others had, coming out only at night, or transforming in general.

I never read Marvels all the way through, but it was great to look at no doubt. I think Kingdom Come was a better story, and Ross really went after all the characters, but I've always thought his art was lacking in dynamism... Not an effective visual story teller for me...

Bottom line was he didn't mind being the heavy, didn't care if he knew you hated him as long as he knew you LOVED Marvel... I've read his mentor over at DC was a legendary harda** but the trains always ran on time there during his time as well. Christopher Priest, in his outline of his time on the Spiderbooks on his website he speaks of Shooter at length...

The Hobgoblin. Oh wait, they screwed that up twice... They didn't, in the end. Apparently, Roderick Kingsley was actually intended to be the Hobgoblin all along, it just took them a few decades to get there. I didn't know that! So was the Ned Leeds thing editorial fiat? An attempt to put a bow on it and move on?

That was an honest question. I have never read anything older than the Brood's first appearance in Uncanny X-Men (around #160). And all I know of the Phoenix saga is from the 90's X-Men cartoon. And in that (and even kidded in the first Singer X-Men movie) Cyclops has always come off as a dick to me. Maybe not totally mean, but always with a stick up his ____. And I hear in more modern comics they've kind of ran with that, like Power Girl's bosom. No, I hear you and you're right. He's always been an uptight guy, and I've never been a huge fan. For me, his up and leaving of his wife and baby with almost no (if I'm wrong please correct me) explanation to play super hero again with his not dead anymore ex was so beyond him being an emo dick.

I hated how he pushed through the whole "Jean was never the Phoenix" thing, seeing as it was he who insisted she die to pay for her sins of galactic mass murder. It didn't absolve Jean as much as it crapped on a beautiful story and was the vehicle for Scott becoming an absolute cad. So there was a time in Cyclops' publishing history where he wasn't a dick? Ok you got me there.
