I thought Gil Kane and Klaus Janson made a great team, especially on Daredevil #147, 148 & 151 (laying the foundations that Frank Miller and Janson built on later) and What If? #3. I tend to dislike Vince Colletta's inking of most pencillers. Kane is supposed to have said Colletta was his second favourite inker, and when this led to the question of who was his favourite he said "anyone else." If I could double-like this, I would. I've often sited Kane / Janson as some of the best comic art ever, and you ever threw in a classic favorite What If # 3.
My god these are awesome... Give me Kane, Colan, Romita, or Adams any day... Beautiful!!

An artist that is criminally under rated is Bob Oksner. This is just beautiful

Always loved seeing Wally Wood doing inks. Hell, Wally Wood doing anything Wally Wood inking Jack Kirby on those Skymasters newspaper strips Wally Wood inking the pedestrian Bob Brown in Superboy circa 1970 and made it look nice Wally Wood inking Ric Estrada on All Star comics Wally Wood inking Ditko but I forget for which strip Wood and Sinott were the kings huh? How long was Joe on FF with Kirby?

I had read that Byrnes' pencils suffer if he inked them, and Bob Layton was almost always solid, but never really gave it a thought. Now with a better trained eye (and more jaded outlook) I really see how it can make or break a page... Byrne disliked Layton's inking of his pencils on Incredible Hulk Annual #7 because he thought the inking made the Hulk and the Angel look gay. linkI like those pages, but what the hell do I know?

You're right on that, he inked Adam on Ghost Rider and it was terrible, it almost seems as if he was penciling it. What I wrote was a guess, unsubstantiated, And kinda jerky... It was Andy Kubert that Joe inked on Ghost Rider. I rather liked the art on those issues, although I tend to dislike anything written by Howard Mackie. Andy and Joe also worked together on the first two issues of Before Watchmen: Nite Owl shortly before Joe died. Then I'm mistaken, thought it was the other way around, thanks for setting me straight!

Favorite: John Buscema/Alfredo Alcala Least favorite: Rob Liefeld/Whoever had the misfortune of inking his pencils Perfume on a pig eh? I had read that Byrnes wasn't a particularly strong inker and his penciles suffered as a result...

As the subject says, I'd be very interested to see choices and examples anyone has regarding this topic. I'm hopeless as far as any combos because I never really paid attention, I just noticed sometimes guys pages looked better than other times and just guessed it was the inker. Is this true?
Sorry if if this has been discussed before...

You're right on that, he inked Adam on Ghost Rider and it was terrible, it almost seems as if he was penciling it. What I wrote was a guess, unsubstantiated, And kinda jerky... Naw, that's OK, it would be nuts to have Joe Kubert as an inker. Wouldn't want to take away his time (when alive of course) from pencilling some beautiful pages I think I remember Neal Adams inking a Kubert Enemy Ace story in the original Star Spangled War Stories run and it was a masterpiece It's funny that when I was younger I never paid any attention to or really noticed that relationship (pencil/inker) I had read that Byrnes' pencils suffer if he inked them, and Bob Layton was almost always solid, but never really gave it a thought. Now with a better trained eye (and more jaded outlook) I really see how it can make or break a page...

He's my favorite character in all of comics after Superman. Here's one of my favorite Batman moments of all time from the Justice League cartoon.
One of my favorites as well, loved the whole Bruce and Diana thing too, MUCH more her and Supes

Also, any artist inked by Joe Kubert suffers tremendously. I know he's pretty well respected, but I'm not a fan. I really can't think of very many instances of Kubert inking someone else. Maybe his sons a few times. You're right on that, he inked Adam on Ghost Rider and it was terrible, it almost seems as if he was penciling it. What I wrote was a guess, unsubstantiated, And kinda jerky...

I recently re-read the Mutant Massacre in its entirety after purchasing the complete tpb. This filled in several blanks as I could never afford (or find) the ENTIRE run. What a big deal this must have been at the time. A brutal line wide cross over, the ramifications of which are felt for years as this really propels the X-books into a major shake up of the status quo. They really do just smash the classic X-Men status quo - say goodbye to the Mansion and your favourite characters, here's Havok, Longshot and some chick named Psylocke instead. Ballsy. Yes! The lineup that for many people is THE quintesstial X-lineup is shattered and tossed to the winds. In hindsight I also think it's quite poignant that when they leave the mansion, it's the last time the X-Men and NM share that place, until just before that line wide reshuffle.

For first hand reading, Frank Miller's implosion into full blown assholery in DKSB, and all star Batman were cosmically awful (and noted on this thread already.)
This is a tough one as my experience with the greats goes only as far as their seminal works, so it would be second hand knowledge. Byrnes not too good Doom Patrol, His Wonder Woman want too hot either from what I gather.
Also, any artist inked by Joe Kubert suffers tremendously. I know he's pretty well respected, but I'm not a fan.

He could definitely be a dick at times, but more than anything, I always just found him incredibly boring. He's the perfect, goody two-shoes Boy Scout who never really wrestles with any sort of moral dilemma. Nothing can really hurt him either to my knowledge. Yeah, kryptonite and magic, but it's not like either has a chance of actually putting a permanent end to him. IDK, guess it's just a matter of preference. I've been a big Punisher fan for decades and a lot of my comic buddies have always given me crap for it. Less so since Ennis' run under the MAX label. I agree that his omnipotence is boring, Oneill tried to power him down, that was forgotten... Bryne did a great job in the reboot, but within 10 years he was planet juggling again..
