They were mostly self contained until the 90's when the 4 titles essentially became a weekly similar to what DC did with the Superman titles at that time. Kind of what I figured, I never read any of them consistently, I'd usually grab the one with a favorite villain!

Apart from different creative teams, were the different Spider-Man books (Amazing, Spectacular, Web) alike in tone and subject matter? I was always curious if they all ran into one another (an editorial nightmare I'm sure) or if they were mostly self contained, big events notwithstanding...

There was an iteration that got whacked by scourge in one of the Spider-Man books I believe...

John Byrne's Next Men vol. 1 '92-'94... While he was doing this, I had just gotten into comics, marvel only, mostly x-titles, and he was already a legend. I still haven't gotten to it.

By the time I "met" Jean, she was a non Phoenix powered force to be reckoned with. A telepath of the highest order, (are MU telepathy ranked anywhere?) coupled of course with her impressive telekinesis. After re-reading the original stories thru dark Phoenix and then post resurrection. Her progression as acharacter was really something to see. Watching her break Sabretooths leg (as promised) showed me a use of that power that I had never thought of, she can literally crush you...
I would've loved to see her and Maddie (I have a soft spot for her, loved the team dynamic with her around in San Fran, Dallas and the outback) meet in a non inferno setting, but I believe the two books that housed them never actually met on page until Inferno? What a mini that would've been! Anyway, original heroic death becoming meaningless by shitty editorial fiat notwithstanding, she's a favorite of mine as well.

I don't think Bats ever could, that being said I love the idea of him and Diana. Something along the lines of JL Unlimited but amped up a little...

I'm replying without quoting as my iPad is being obstinate... Gail Simone's Birds of Prey was a book that was so much fun to read, (albeit not consistently) great characterization, smart humor, I laughed a TON. I never got into New 52 at all but Gail Simone + Batgirl has to be just frikkin' gold!

I was exaggerating, but his powers did increase after Byrnes' departure and throughout the 90's didn't they? Eventually, but never quite to pre-Crisis levels. Besides, I'm with Morrison on this: it doesn't matter how strong Superman is. He's as strong as you need him to be. Saying he's too powerful while characters like Batman and Wolverine are treated like plot-protected gods and Silver Surfer, Thor, Spectre, Doctor Fate, Doctor Strange, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Hulk, the Green Lanterns et al have books is silly. It's not like Batman or Daredevil aren't functionally just as invulnerable (spoiler for the next million issues of Batman: Batman lives). I get that, and I wasn't trying to be a dick or shit on Supes... great point with Wolverine. I always enjoyed when his healing factor was taxed to the limit during the Claremont years. Made him MUCH more interesting, but that went out the window when got the adamantium back...

There was a great skit with the original cast of Saturday Night Live. The skit was "What If Superman's Rocket Landed In Germany And He Became A Nazi? " The skit showed Superman in a gestapo's office and a prisoner was brought in for questioning (I think the prisoner was Al Franken) Superman uses his X-ray vision and says " That man is Jewish" and here it is What If?This is gold...

I agree that his omnipotence is boring, Oneill tried to power him down, that was forgotten... Bryne did a great job in the reboot, but within 10 years he was planet juggling again.. Um...no he wasn't... I was exaggerating, but his powers did increase after Byrnes' departure and throughout the 90's didn't they?

Amazing that there's a guy that big. I had no idea. Sizes of Marvel VillainsCheck out the Villain Chart that I provided for you! Doom's exclamation is as priceless as it is appropriate! Magus looks more like Warlock now i see... (And I haven't really paid any attention to the cosmic characters since like the, the Infinity Guantlet)

Yes! The lineup that for many people is THE quintesstial X-lineup is shattered and tossed to the winds. In hindsight I also think it's quite poignant that when they leave the mansion, it's the last time the X-Men and NM share that place, until just before that line wide reshuffle. This was a huge risk but it played to Claremont's writing philosophy, that characters should grow, mature, get injured, retire, and even die (unless of course Editorial overrides you) and focusing on a different core of characters helped the franchise grow. Add in the forthcoming Marc Silvestri and I still love Havok, Dazzler, and Longshot to this day. Absolutely! Remember that when Cyclops left the team, it was him being WRITTEN OUT, to walk off into the sunset with Maddie and Nathan... He could come back for big events, or an emergency but he was to be retired... Then Shooter and Layton get the X-Factor bug up their asses, which wouldn't have been as bad if they didn't decide to bring Jean back from the dead (a death Shooter ironically had demanded not 5 years prior) and basically make everything go pear shaped. Jean comes back, Claremont and Byrne's classic ending gets pooped on, Cyclops morphs into some horrible emo man child, and Maddie is marginalized to the point of literal redundancy... ok, I think I got a little out of hand there, but I agree completel...

I like that little Stan Lee in your introduction ... nicely played and welcome to CCF! Thank you! Saturday mornings with Spider-Man and his amazing friends!
