I never read Hidden Years, but have seen the interior art. Not his best work, not even Tom Palmer inking helped.

Byrne was one of (maybe the) best Kirby/Adams style artist, but his stuff just didn't look all that different from the rest of the late '70s early '80s superhero artists. I totally disagree, he may have been influenced by Kirby/Adams but Byrne had his own distinct style.

I'm quite shocked at the disrespect being shown John Byrne. He was the biggest thing in the late 70's to late 80's. He literally was given Superman to do what he wished, THAT'S how big he was. I will agree that now , he's not employable and his stupid comments over the years have hurt him, but his legacy as one of the greats is secured. When I was reading Marvel Comics in the late 70's/80's I wished every book was drawn by Byrne, that's how good he was. I don't mean any disrespect by commenting on his later art style/declining work (IMO), doesn't take away from how good he was in the past. I haven't kept up on his "stupid comments" or feuds with Marvel/DC, but heard enough to know that he has only hurt himself in the industry.

I bid on a couple of copies of this over the last few weeks: Detective Comics #388! With the Joker on the Moon! I didn't win any of my bids. But remembering what a pain it was a few years ago when I was trying not to go over $20 for Detective Comics #332 (also with the Joker), I went ahead and just ordered Detective Comics #388 for $24. But when I was bidding, I put in some low bids on some other issues of Detective Comics that I need and I got Detective Comics #357 in the VG/F range (supposedly) for $7.50. Great Joker issue with A nice Gil Kane Batgirl backup story to double your reading pleasure.

Byrne is not in the superstar league anymore. I suppose he still has die hard followers from the bygone era. Some of his commission pieces are OK, some look rushed with the typical identical facial smirks. I hear Byrne hates it when fans color his commission pieces. I love all of his work from the 70's and most of the 80's. I would not get even remotely excited if I heard he was returning to X-Men or FF.

Catwoman, I prefer a more old school retro design. Not a fan of the goggles. A Michelle Pfeiffer type outfit without the stitches is preferable.
Wonder Woman, like her classic look, not big on the Xena Warrior with a sword look.
Batman, hate the new Bat emblem with yellow outline and the belt is Hideous! The new 52 suit was pretty nice.

Uncanny X-Men #136 Fantastic Four #177 or 184? I have a bad memory Me too, and yet I still remember this stuff. Go figure. I guess my brain can only retain the important stuff. I remember memorable issues more than 1st issues. For instance I love Batman, but recall MANY loved early issues...#260, Brave & Bold #114, etc.

If I were to die tonight I would re-read classics...
Kirby FF or Silver Age Batman.

Ha, I agree, the past is the best! Once you have grown up on old comics you never really outgrow them. Comics that you grow up with shape you. I was reading a new Batman Rebirth book the other day where Batman was obviously having sex with Catwoman & then I was thinking back how much I preferred it (in the old comics) when sex was only hinted at or implied. Yeah, everything naughty is in your face these days. Batman & Catwoman were at their best when everything was a tease.

He wasn't such a bad guy, his sister was really nice. I did smash his pumpkin that was in front of his house one year during Halloween. Although I did feel bad about it.
