That's my feeling as well, it really depends on my mood and the kind of food I want. I mean if it was more specific, like say do you prefer local or chain Italian it would be more clean cut(local) but in general? No such luck. See I don't subscribe to that as it doesn't make you think about what option you would truly choose. hence no third option. So that people said if you truly had to choose between one or the other what would it be? I would say neither and point out that the question was flawed as it's just too broad a scenario to truly be an either/or type of question.

How is a question flawed when you are asking one make a decision between two choices? People can answer broad questions with one choice or the other. What you're saying comes down to over-thinking on one's part and total avoidance of having to make a choice when given one(in which there are only 2 options to choose from).

It's not two choices though, it's a question that has many multiple choices that you are attempting to simplify into two choices; creating a false dilemma.

There was once a time when I would have made fun of "food hippies", but after reading a few books and seeing some documentaries on the food industry, as well as having friends and family in the restaurant business, my consumption of fast food and chain restaurants has sharply plummeted over the past 10 years. The only nationwide chain restaurant that I eat at with any frequency is Chipotle. There are also a few local chains that do the "burger and fries" type of meal that I will eat at. But I actively avoid McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, TGI Fridays, Ruby Tuesday's, Outback, etc.

I live in a small town, so there are no chain restaurants over here.
In fact I've been only 3 times in my life at a McDonald's. Twice due to being with a group and the majority wanted to go there (we were in Paris! Why would you go to McDonald's in Paris?) and the other time due to a heavy storm (all roads were blocked, no public transport and my colleague and I were stranded so we waited at a McDonald's while my brother came to pick is up. No complaints about that place though: manager made it clear that people who were seeking shelter did not need to order anything and provided free coffee for everyone.)

I like some chains that are actually good, but they're usually not huge chains and I'm usually surprised to find out they're chains at all. Rosati's Pizza being the first that comes to mind. I thought the one out here was the only one until I looked them up on Yelp. Many of the chains I really like are not franchises but are still family operated, like our Fisherman's Market and LG's Steakhouse, which would really be a stretch calling either a "chain" since I can count the number of locations they have on one hand. But yeah, the locally owned stuff is usually better.

I definitely prefer local restaurants, particularly farm-to-table places or ones that have a unique style or set of offerings. When we were dating and even going about three years into our marriage, my wife and I ate at a lot of places like that around Pittsburgh and other cities when we would travel.
Nowadays, sadly, I tend to eat at chain restaurants a lot, because my daughters don't have sophisticated enough palates yet and I would wind up wasting a lot of food and/or money taking them to better places. That said, there are places we will go more often (Chili's and Red Robin are two current favorites) than others (TGI Fridays or Olive Garden, which I absolutely loathe).
On date nights, however, the wife and I will definitely seek out either old favorites or new places to stretch our culinary muscles.

As far as chains go, I like Olive Garden and Frudruckers. We had a Frudruckers here once and in a great location however within a year or so it closed down.

If all you want is a Coke, McDonald's in Paris is probably the cheapest place to get it.

I'm more likely to try a new chain than a new local restaurant because I think there's less risk involved; generally big chains have to maintain a certain level of cleanliness and have a semi-competent staff and a menu that isn't likely to offend. But once I find a local restaurant I like, I go back again and again, whereas I rarely ever actively choose to go to a chain restaurant. The one exception is Quaker Steak and Lube, because one moved in about two minutes from us, has an excellent wait staff, and generally works hard to feel friendly and local, and I love wings.

For pizza? Local. For anything else: It depends upon what I want.
I will not eat pancakes anywhere but at home. I don't use water with my pancake mix, I use milk. Water makes all pancakes taste like hell.
