I've thought long and hard to avoid staying the grey area, as I call it. And I've decided chain. Don't get my wrong, I like aspects of local, but here's my reasoning, albiet, it might sound silly.
Most of my favorite places are chains. Smaller chains, but chains all the same. Like Joe's Crab Shack. Not everyone has heard of it, but I can list three different locations in two states off the top of my head. So it's a chain. Also Bubba Gumps is a great place for me. Also a chain.
I like being able to find myself in a town being to choose a place that I also could've chosen had a gone to another town. I live a crossroads type of town. We sit in a circle of larger towns to visit. So, I like not having to be limited on which town to visit based on where I want to eat. (This can cause problems too though lol)
And finally: anonymity. This is the silly reasoning. I have paranoia and prefer to be able to eat and hopefully not be recognized. Or not have a place where the staff knows me and what I like.

For pizza? Local. For anything else: It depends upon what I want. I will not eat pancakes anywhere but at home. I don't use water with my pancake mix, I use milk. Water makes all pancakes taste like hell. That's interesting. We have the instant pancake mix, do you use milk with that as well?

If I eat out say during the work day, I usually get it to go and bring it back to the office. Most days before lunch time even comes the salesmen are gone and I'm alone at the office anyway. I get the annonimity thing. But I also lilt the quiet and solitude. It's refreshing because I don't get it at home with my boys. :-) It's also why I drink alone. I don't need an audience to eat or drink. If I do sit in to eat, I find I'm less likely to be "friended" by the staff at a chain than a local restaurant.

I like the solitude too! When I was in high school, my science teacher told me I could bring my lunch and eat in his classroom if I didn't want to stay in the cafeteria. He never stayed in his room, so I was alone. And the security cameras were always both a help and a hindrance to me. So, that's kinda like when you eat in the office alone. The quiet is nice, I agree. and yeah I'm not huge on having an audience either, and even if it wounds harsh, I don't want to befriend the staff. I'm sure they're great people, I just don't like to converse with people...much.

It's kinda funny, I go to this local place frequently and I usually get one of two meals and some of the staff always try to guess what I'm getting. That was real nice of the teacher! Oh if you have a second I sent you a PM. That does sound amusing! How often do they guess right? During my first few years of college, I'd go get a tea from a McDonald's on the way home in the warm months, and hot chocolate in the cold months.it got to the point where they would already have e drink made by the time I paid for it! I agree! He was the only teacher who understood my problem! Wait, hang on, when was that sent!? Thanks for telling me, I'd have never seen it, otherwise. I've been waiting for it, just thought you were busy like I've been!

Oh I've sent you a few going back to November, guess you didn't see them. That would be cool, I'm curious now. Lol if that's not too much! And I didn't I'm sorry. I also haven't been on much since college started throwing papers and exams around like I've got nothing else to do. I had time to get on and drop one message here and there to let people know I'm not dead and then had to get off to work some more. This semester was awful.

Luckily it's winter break now! Well every time I go there in the month of January I will keep a tally! Yay thanks! Coming soon: we find out how well they know Wes! Thanks for understanding. Yes, it is, I should be on more often now!

Thanks for you comments Sabra, this was kind of what i was looking for from people. Staying out of the"gray area" as you call it(Me I call it riding the fence) and actually picking on of the options presented with the why you chose that. I totally get you point about wanting being able to be familiar with where you go. I get the anonymity thing as well. Years ago i felt much the same, but as I've gotten a little older, I like that I'm know where i go and that people as social and do know your likes/dislikes.

Local all the way. We have 3 local restaurants within walking distance that we go to all of the time. It's awesome to know everybody there, the staff and the regulars. People are generally happy to see you. The local places around here (Richmond, VA) tend to bring in a lot of high quality local foods and beers. The staff gets to know you and lets you know when something new has come in that is to your taste. Hell, we generally end up getting free shots on both of our birthdays at this point. Also the places we go are willing to change stuff up for you, or even come up with a new dish for you occasionally.
I don't hate all of the chains, but around here there are so many superior local places to try that going to a chain where you'll end up paying more for worse food just seems pointless.

I'm sure they're great people, I just don't like to converse with people...much. I wasn't social much in high school and I've never been much of an eater. Most days I didn't eat so I could go outside when the weather was good and be alone. Sometimes I'd hang out where the pot smokers went cause I've always found them a no bs kind of people. They'd let me sit with them though I never partook. I agree with that too. When my wife and I go out the best tip a guy or gal is going to get is based on their skill and service as their job is not how friendly (or over friendly I've had from both genders) they are to me. I come to eat and/or drink not party. I'm kind of a crab ass that way I guess. It's why I rarely do go out because I realize that about myself. Actually in most all other aspects of my life I'm though of as antisocial by many just because I'm a listener more than a talker with anyone outside my wife and boys.

I agree the local places tend to have a better quality of freshness of product and that they tend to be more accommodating to people's tastes and willing to change things up for the customers usually with no extra fee attached.

Thanks I used to get in trouble staying in the gray area. In high school English, we'd play a game. Left side of the room was yes. Right side was no. And middle was maybe. The teacher would ask a question and we would have to silently walk to a side without explanation. Usually I found myself on the middle, seeing both sides to each question. About a week after playing, she changed the game to yes and no only. Oops. I'm glad I'm not being as silly as I thought! It seems several people get the being alone and unknown while out and about. Maybe one day I'll change my mind, but it's not today that's for sure!
