Expensive week On the European side, appareantly Lanfeust Oddysey part 5 is coming out, which is weird, because part 5 has been in my bookcase for several months now. Maybe it's a type and they mean #6, cause that one came out a few months ago in France. (Or they are reprinting #5 because #6 is coming out?)

I'm liking the Marvel Star Wars reboot so far. The Darth Vader comic was a really good first issue and the two issues of Star Wars have been solid.

Silver Surfer was a surprisingly quick read, but I enjoyed it. Still the prettiest book out. Batgirl appears to finally be wrapping up the imposter storyline, but not before making me buy another book (Secret Origins), which I'm not crazy about. Regardless, the book continues to be really fun. Didn't really care for Angela. Deathlok looks to be getting interesting.
Shop didn't get Black Widow.

He did it with Noble Causes and Dynamo 5 and Jay Faerber has done it again. Secret Identities #1 was quite good as someone of questionable motives poses as a superhero to infiltrate The Front Line. It is a team filled with secrets the readers are let it on, but we'll see if/how they're exposed in the issues ahead. The art by Ilias Kyriazis was a pleasant surprise. 28 pages of story for #3.50 is also a good deal.

When I heard Dynamite had acquired the rights to produce new Spirit material I was not enthused. Some of their pulp stuff has been good, but a lot has been meh. Then I saw this.... Matt Wagner to write new Spirit adventures for Dynamiteok so they might have something there... -M

And you know what? No, from what I've seen of that era of Spirit sections, they aren't really the proper Spirit either. Those strips are quite formulaic overall, turning the Spirit into more of a bog standard detective fiction piece, rather than something that thrived on characterisation and human interest, as it did under Eisner's hand. In particular, Fine's artwork was workman-like and badly lacked the boundless inventiveness of Eisner himself. Of course, those strips are still way more legitimate as Spirit stories than the likes of this forthcomig Matt Wagner series of the Darwin Cooke stuff from a few years back. But for me, the only Spirit stuff that's worth reading is the stuff that Eisner did himself before and after the Second World War.

The Spirit is difficult to associate with anyone else since the "point" of the strip wasn't to tell a masked crime-fighter yarn so much as it was a vehicle for Eisner to experiment with the medium of comics. I get how it's hard for some readers to accept other creators working with the character. The Spirit was more a vehicle than a character; as opposed to Batman or Superman who ultimately subsumes any creator, regardless of talent level, that works with them.

So I was up late last night clicking around the internet and while I was at it I found some current magazines done in the Warren tradition and went ahead and ordered a few. I bought the first two issues of Bloke's Terrible Tomb Of Terror They're sold out on the website, but I found them on eBay for cover price, and autographed. Also bought the first two issues of The Creeps magazine Both appear to be either reprints from Warren, unpublished Warren stuff, or a combination of both in addition to new stuff in the Warren style. I don't know. But they look cool so I'll give them a try. I was following Eeek! before it was reprinted in America. And looking it up now, looks like it's been ongoing at Asylum. I'll have to catch up. Only have the first five issues
