Squirrel Girl's first appearance has been hot for awhile. It's not an easy comic to find; I've been looking for a while and haven't found a single copy anywhere, at stores or shows, at any price, much less cheap.

That cover is wretched though.

I bought that comic off the racks when it came out more than 20 years ago. I think I bought it at the time because I was really into the X-Men, and Wolverine in particular. I don't think I even read the Squirrel Girl story until a few years ago. If I recall, it was actually an Iron Man story where she was a guest star, and back then I thought Iron Man was a lame character, so I never bothered to read that part of the book.

I think she's always been used as an ironic, throwaway character (from what I've gathered online, never read a comic with her in it) but with current trends surrounding Deadpool and Hawkeye and Glory and other new interpretations on superheroes that skirt the normal tooth gritting flexing splash page tropes, it makes sense that the character would have a following. Ant Man movie coming up,, Groot being the biggest thing in comics at the moment, the newly designed Batgirl. I think the fun, well written superhero comic may be on the verge of a renaissance. It would be excellent for the genre. May even convince me to give it a second shot.

Squirrel Girl (who carried several "Great Lakes" minis and is NOT a throwaway character) could be a surprise top 10 hit like Harley Quinn.

I can see what you are all saying. There definitely seems to be an audience for more offbeat types of superhero characters these days.
I just checked the eBay auction again... holy cow, the bidding has reached $79 as of noon EST. Just goes to show the unpredictable nature of comic valuations. When I was a kid, I bought copies of all the "hot" comics -- X-Force #1, Spider-Man #1, Wolverine #1, etc. Who knew that the first appearance of Squirrel Girl would be more valuable than all of them.

Unfortunately, they went with a VERY underground-y fill-in artist for a couple of issues who may have killed the book's prospects.

Agreed -- She-Hulk is probably one of the best books Marvel is putting out right now, and at $2.99 it's a bargain. Though cynical me says it's only a matter of time before they relaunch with a new #1 and a $3.99 price point. As for the art -- Javier Pulido is the regular penciler. Based on comments I've read online, he seems to be a controversial choice with readers, as his style is very simple and cartoony, and definitely not your typical superhero action comic look. He's definitely not someone you'd want drawing, say, Punisher or a typical X-Book, and I can't imagine him finding work at DC these days, but I think his style works well for She-Hulk's tone. The fill-in artist was Ron Wimberly. If people didn't like Pulido, then they must have HATED Wimberly. Personally, I'm pretty forgiving of artist with atypical or quirky styles, so long as it doesn't get in the way of the story, but honestly Wimberly's art was painful for me to look at. Here's a sample of his art. I can't even tell that we're looking at women.

I'm getting nothing from the LCS this week, as my pull list is down to just three books, those being Aquaman (the only DC book that has ever been on my pull list), Moon Knight (which has been surprisingly good even after Ellis' departure) and All-New X-Factor (I'm a sucker for PAD); this is down from around 15 per month just three years ago, but it reflects my growing disinterest in new comics. I'm sure I'll be picking up the new Captain America series once it launches and I'll more than likely get Superior Iron Man, but there is not much else out there that remotely interests me.

I don't mind that Wimberly art, but it doesn't really fit the tone and She-Hulk looks awful.
