So far, the most fun I've had reading the Batgirl Showcase volume is the JLA story. It's Justice League of America #60, written by Gardner Fox, art by Sekowsky and Greene. This story is so wonderfully whacky that I almost feel bad about saying all those bad things about JLA from 1970 and 1971. (Almost. Then I start to remember WHY I said those bad things.)
I've never read this one before. And I think this is the first story I've ever seen with Queen Bee. And I love Queen Bee! What a crazy kook she is! What a loon! Geez Louise, she's awesome!
I have heard of Queen Bee, of course. I remember seeing a sort of guide to DC villains as a centerfold in one of those super-villain-themed Limited Collector's Editions in the 1970s, with a picture and a few paragraphs for 15 or 20 villains, dudes like Felix Faust and Vandal Savage and Kanjar Ro. And one of them was Queen Bee. And I've probably seen her here or there in flashbacks or crowd scenes, like maybe in a JLA/JSA team-up? Maybe?
She's glorious! Where has this one been all my life?
Anyway, she has a totally ridiculous plan to enslave the members of the JLA by shrinking them down to the size of bees and they grow bee's wings and they are mind-controlled by her. It doesn't work right on some of the members, but she gets Batman, Green Arrow, Flash, Superman, Green Lantern, Atom and she also gets Batgirl.
You see, Queen Bee (Yes, I'm humming the song from the Heavy Metal soundtrack every time I write that) has taken an immortality serum, but it has bad side effects and is making her immobile. So she sends her little enslaved JLA-drones to three different planets to get the ingredients for the antidote.
God, the art's great. Sid Greene was one of Sekowsky's better inkers. There's several panels (before Batgirl was enslaved) where the Dominoed Dare-Doll is fighting the bee-sized JLA members and they're all attacking her, buzzing around, and the Flash is running up her leg and I think I laughed out loud when I saw it.
I'm looking at the index and I see there's a story in this volume from Adventure Comics called "The Supergirl Gang" and I can't wait to read it! I think you'll be hearing from a lot as I read Showcase Presents: Batgirl.
Long live Queen Zazzala!
