I'm surprised by the Rick Jones reactions. He was a loyal sidekick to the Hulk in the early days and was never a boring character. I enjoyed him in the Kree/Skrull war and he was great in the Captain Marvel (v.1) series. I had to leave a comic board once because of the rampant Rick Jones hate...I really don't want to do it again. I like this place. I will admit that he was hard to take seriously in the 70's when Sal Buscema was still dressing him like vintage 50's James Dean, but that was hardly his fault.

It's too bad. When people say the word "hate" in forums, I hope they mean that they don't like it. Rick Jones is a make believe character that has no real bearing on the important things in life.
I "hate" the Yankees but it's a make believe hate. I really mean no harm towards them and if they win or lose, it doesn't change my life.

My kicking Rick Jones in the nut sack when he sings has nothing to do with hate. It's reminding him to sing in a high octave

I "hate" the Yankees but it's a make believe hate. I really mean no harm towards them and if they win or lose, it doesn't change my life. I take a different stance on this, in that I think it's actually OK to "hate" a make-believe character, in that there is no action I could take against said character that would cause him/her/it harm. My "hate" can only manifest itself in feelings of "dear Lord, why this asshat again" rather than me being able to punch, kick, hang, stab, shoot, blow up, dissolve in acid, drop off a cliff, or hit with a car the individual in question, because they are a two-dimensional drawing (as in the case of Rick Jones), although I guess I could crumple up the book he's in (which I really don't want to do to, say, my Captain America #110). Conversely, maybe "hate" was too strong a word, but I don't like any aspect nor incarnation of the Rick Jones character. If Hulk had done a Lennie Small on him early on, many subsequent stories wouldn't have been ruined, or at least made less-enjoyable, for me by his presence. Lastly, there's nothing wrong with hating the Yankees. It's a completely natural and understandable reaction to pure evil.

I never cared for any of the human characters/baggage in Jack Kirby's Fourth World: Victor Stanza the insurance broker, Claudia Shane the secretary, Dave Lincoln and the "young, but cool" Harvey Lockman.

I will admit that he was hard to take seriously in the 70's when Sal Buscema was still dressing him like vintage 50's James Dean, but that was hardly his fault. I don't really get the "Rick Jones hate" either. For one thing, he's the center of numerous hilarious Silver Age moments. Like in the very early Hulk stories, where the Hulk is jumping for mile-long leaps and Rick is riding on his back, always keeping a firm hold around the Hulk's neck like it's no problem!
Or what about Avengers #8, where the big guns have been immobilized by Kang, and the Wasp, Rick Jones and the Teen Brigade band together, sneak onto Kang's time ship and save the day!
And any scene with Rick Jones in a coffee house, reciting wavy poetry with musical notes attached as he holds a guitar, with hippies calling him "the next Dylan" and "the voice of our generation," is just too amusing to develop any negative thoughts. Especially with that Gil Kane art!
Or following Cap around and saying "Gosh, Cap, why can't I be in the Avengers? You could train me like Bucky and it would be just the old days!" and Cap yelling, "Stop talking about Bucky! Give it a rest, kid!"
Good times.

I was actually thinking of picking up Rom for some Rick Jones goodness. I won't go that far.... I hated Rom. You are clearly the devil.

I'm surprised to see Rick Jones here, too.. to me he was the 'good' way to do a non-powered PoV sidekick, while Snapper is the 'bad' way. Even Jimmy Olsen isn't done as well as Rick, IMO.

Be sure to print that scene from Avengers #16 where Rick is running around in the Amazon with Cap and Cap throws his shield to protect some random dude and the jaguar runs smack into the shield! I love that panel.
And also the one where the Teen Brigade save the day when they exchange the canisters with the antidote to Adhesive X with the canisters for Adhesive X, thus tricking the Masters of Evil into saving the city! Ha ha! Take that, Zemo!

Yo Hoosier X, I found that Marvel Superheroes issue with the Medusa Story. I'll be posting them forthwith.

Was he singing on the previous page? Just so we're clear, I only wish Rick harm when he thinks he's the next Bob Dylan. Well that and when Marvel turned him into that atrocious A-Bomb character a couple of years ago
