Quotes from Mark Twain It's fine for you to like them. But neither of those quotes is from Twain. In fact, I'm pretty sure he would have have had fisticuffs with anyone who quoted him as saying the second one.

"Well, you know or don't you kennet or haven't I told you every telling has a tailing and that's the he and the she of it."
--James Joyce, Finnegans Wake 213.11-12
I think I'll leave instructions that "Every telling has a tailing" be inscribed on my urn.

Yeah, definitely not Twain although the second half that is often tacked onto the one Mech posted, "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." has been attributed to Twain but never verified. And while that second part sounds slightly more like Twain I definitely lean more towards it not being authentic.

I'm kind of mad when people make these things up about Mark Twain and having said that - I'm sorry that I posted these earlier ...

I'm kind of mad when people make these things up about Mark Twain and having said that - I'm sorry that I posted these earlier ... No problems. I'm a little bit of a nut when it comes to false quotes. It's definitely not personal when I point them out. My issue is that the quotes are an appeal to authority. And if the "authority figure" didn't actually say what is purported...it's not very authoritative.

I'm kind of mad when people make these things up about Mark Twain and having said that - I'm sorry that I posted these earlier ... No reason to be sorry at all, it's often difficult to tell where quotes come from and I think we've all fallen prey to it once or twice.

Animal House - 1978
Dean Vernon Wormer: Here are your grade point avarages. Mr. Kroger: two C's, two D's and an F. That's a 1.2. Congratulations, Kroger. You're at the top of the Delta pledge class. Mr. Dorfman? Flounder: [drunk] Hello! Dean Vernon Wormer: 0.2... Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son. Mr. Hoover, president of Delta house? 1.6; four C's and an F. A fine example you set! Daniel Simpson Day... HAS no grade point average. All courses incomplete. Mr. Blu... [sees Bluto with a pair of pencils in his nostrils] Dean Vernon Wormer: Mr. Blutarsky... zero... point... zero. [Bluto shrugs]
Bluto: Hey! What's all this laying around shit? Stork: What the hell are we supposed to do, ya moron? D-Day: [to Bluto] War's over, man. Wormer dropped the big one. Bluto: What? Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no! Otter: [to Boon] Germans? Boon: Forget it, he's rolling. Bluto: And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough... [thinks hard of something to say] Bluto: The tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go! [Bluto runs out, alone; then returns] Bluto: What the fuck happened to the Delta I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? This could be the greatest night of our lives, but you're gonna let it be the worst. "Ooh, we're afraid to go with you Bluto, we might get in trouble." Well just kiss my ass from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this. Wormer, he's a dead man! Marmalard, dead! Niedermeyer... Otter: Dead! Bluto's right. Psychotic... but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards. Now we could do it with conventional weapons, but that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part! Bluto: We're just the guys to do it. D-Day: [stands up] Boon: [stands up] Let's do it. Bluto: [shouting] "Let's do it"!
Babs: This is absolutely gross! That boy is a P-I-G, pig!

V: People should not be afraid of their government, government should be afraid of their people.
Creedy: Die! Die! Why won't you die? V: Beneath this mask there is more than flesh Mr Creedy. V: Beneath this mask there is an idea. And ideas are bulletproof.
Evey: And you are going to make that happen by blowing up a building? V: The building is a symbol, as is the act of destroying it. Symbols are given power by the people. Alone, a symbol is meaningless, but with enough people, blowing up a building can change the world. Evey: I wish I believed that was possible, but every time I've seen the world change it's always been for the worse.

V: "Of course you can. I'm not questioning your powers of observation, I'm merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is."
Actually, anything V says honestly. But this one is special.

“We are Born like this Into this Into these carefully mad wars Into the sight of broken factory windows of emptiness Into bars where people no longer speak to each other Into fist fights that end as shootings and knifings Born into this Into hospitals which are so expensive that it’s cheaper to die Into lawyers who charge so much it’s cheaper to plead guilty Into a country where the jails are full and the madhouses closed Into a place where the masses elevate fools into rich heroes” ― Charles Bukowski
