Yeah, but to be fair, at least two of the Legionnaire lads also showed some skin in the '70s: Cosmic Boy with his infamous man-corset, and Tyroc.

The Saturn Girl costume was also Cockrum's. He's the one who gave the Legion their 70s makeover (though Mike Grell tweaked a couple of them) That Saturn Girl costume was designed/created by a fan named K. Haven Metzger ("K" is for Kim, and he's a guy btw); here it is along with some other fan fashion submissions that appeared in the giant issue Adventure Comics #403 (cover dated Mar-Apr. 1971) And here are the other pages in that feature: Metzger's new SG costume actually was used in a story prior to the above feature, in the LSH story in Action #392 cover-dated Sept. 1970. In various places such as the Legion Outpost (back then) and in online venues, Metzger has written that he was very surprised when he opened this Action issue, as he'd forgotten all about his design. So here it is, from 1970's Action #392, art by Mortimer/Abel: My mistake on the origin; but, Cocrum did tweak the design a bit. Most of the Legionnaires got a makeover or at least a bit of accenting, during his run.

Here's Cocrums Outsiders art, for the origins of Nightcrawler and at least the look of some other X-Men characters... You can see a bit of Storm's design in Trio (I assume that is her, in the lower right) with the poncho cape and basic bodysuit, though Cockrum went well beyond that design. The Y-shape on the belt makes me chuckle, a bit, as it reminds me of the character of Astrea, from the Young Sentinels, aka The Space Sentinels, from Filmation. The series debuted on Saturday morning in 1977; but, the name was tweaked after a certain blockbuster movie was all over the news and entertainment avenues. Note the group on the right, The Strangers; the character on the upper left appears to be the origin of the design for Fang, of the Imperial Guard, in the X-Men and he also has some of the accenting of Colossus' boots. Cockrum's pastiches for the Shi'ar Imperial Guard always made me want to see him do a full on mini-series with them.

That fan's Shrinking Violet is much like the later Dawnstar character's costume. So Kim Metzger was a junior fashion maven? Who knew!

Oh man, that Cosmic Boy corset was the worst. You mean you never wore one of these then you were younger? You know that splash page above with men weirdly wearing what was supposed to be a skimpy female costume? I bet this costume started as one of those but then lost the corresponding female version.

See, here's the thing; Cosmic Boy's costume was one of those that got a makeover, as far as the styling; but, still had the pink elements. All that Grell did was replace pink cloth with pink skin. Thing was, that look lasted for nearly 10 years, before Cos got a redesign, with the pink cloth put back. I don't recall anyone having a problem with the corset look, through Grell's tenure or after.

That was supposed to have been skin on Cosmic Boy? I never 'saw' it that way, guess it was too much for even my bare-chested Hawkman obsessed mind (and I don't mean my mind was bare-chested), I thought there was some futuristic pink cloth there all the way up his neck! Maybe if there had been some hair, why wasn't there arm and chest hair? What kind of rip-off superhero waxes!!! Okay, Aqualad, you're exempt from that one...

I don't think Grell wanted to draw body hair all of the time. Look what artists had to deal with, every time Wolverine took off his costume... The guy looks like Dutch Mantell!

The design for Trio looks sort of like Storm, but as I mentioned upthread, his design for a character named Black Cat (http://heroeswhohappentobewomen.tumblr.com/post/68665077459/sunday-school-the-creation-of-storm) is really close to Storm.
