What's a Comic Challenge?- a way to figure out "what do I read next?" - motivation to try different genres - motivation to keep reading and make progress on our unread piles - a place to get recommendations How does it work?- we pick a genre (or company, or title, or whatever) for a month - we post in this thread and talk about what we plan to and read all month - you could keep a spoilered list in one post and update it all month, or post as you read - in some forums the lists are kept in a separate thread to avoid clutter, but that's just for future reference What makes it a "challenge"?- well, unofficially, the goal is to read 100 comics a month, but that isn't stressed - the group discussion will challenge and encourage you to read more (the main goal of most participants I imagine) Who can participate?- anyone and everyone! - you don't have to list your reading or even post at all to participate, but what's the fun in that? - quasi-technically, anyone on the planet who reads a qualifying book for the month is a participant, whether they know it or not When does it start and end?- it begins at dusk the night before the 1st of the month, and ends at dawn the following 1st - this bonus time allows for possible "double counting" cross-Challenge content Who wins?- there are no losers, the person who reads one page a month is equal to the person who reads 20 books a day More info and discussion in the initial interest thread here : classiccomics.boards.net/thread/2350/interest-monthly-comic-reading-challengesWe can use this month as a test case and tweak/discuss the process throughout. I choose Fantasy for this month mainly because that was the set schedule over at my other forum, and I can't do two separate genres/Challenges at a time. What books count as fantasy? - let's leave that for others or another post, as I'm tired of typing

It has a great Ray Bradbury kind of feel to it, like someone took Something Wicked This Way Comes and smashed it together with the Halloween Tree, Gaiman's work... and Alice Cooper. It's a book that's seemingly tailor fitted to my tastes.

(I read that a while back and thought it was cool. And I'm totally down with Alice Cooper.) Alright, rules question: Would the children's book series Bone: Quest for the Spark with illustrations by Jeff Smith count? 'Cause I just got that out of the library. If not I might try to re-read Powr Mastrs and get caught up with new volumes.

If not I might try to re-read Powr Mastrs and get caught up with new volumes. Bone stuff totally counts! In fact, I almost finished Bone a few months ago in another Challenge (humor?) and have been waiting until this month to finish it off; the series proper and those illustrated novels. As for counting 'rules', I vote we keep it simple and liberal and up to each individual's discretion for the most part. A standard size comic would count as one; larger size comics and trades would count one for each 20 pages. Something a little unique like those Bone books that are mainly prose, I don't know, but at least one since they are Bone and include a lot of illustrations. You could read five omnibi and give yourself a total count of five, or total up the issues, or use the page count/20 rule. You don't even have to keep a list or keep it numbered actually. Just relax, read, discuss, and have fun.

Don't know if I have the time to keep up with it, but I managed to get a copy of (dutch translation) of Roy Thomas and P. Craig Russel's adaption of Michael Moorcock's Elric: The Dreaming City (1982).

Vaguely recall them being priced higher than a normal book at that time, but could be wrong.

My grandiose plan for the month is to try to read all of Fables. I loved Bill Willingham's work back in the day, and loved the first issue of Fables. Always meant to read it regularly, but never got beyond that beginning. The series just ended, and was on sale at Comixology last week, so it seemed appropriate to buy the whole thing and try to binge it this month. But 150 comics in one month isn't my norm, plus I have a few other smaller series to finish, so I might not even get to it.

So, you can only read comics in the fantasy genre , or can you read any comic as long as it has fantasy elements?

So, you can only read comics in the fantasy genre , or can you read any comic as long as it has fantasy elements? I vote for the liberal interpretation for as much inclusion as possible. Technically, almost any superhero comic could be considered to have fantasy elements. I'm personally not opposed to people counting them, but would encourage people to concentrate on an actual fantasy genre.

I've been thinking of a re-read of Fables since it's finished. No way I'll get done this month. Not a chance. But I was going to do a re-read some time soon, so no reason not to start now.

I just finished the Unwritten/Fables crossover. Based on your "dusk the night before" rule, I think I read the last issue (Unwritten #54) in the proper time span to be an unknowing participant.
So that's my first entry for the month.

I'll be interested to see if reading it all at once works.. alot of the beauty of Fables was the slow build.
