#11 HawkmanAlter Ego: Carter Hall Special Note: I only recognize this version as the true Hawkman in the Golden Age of Comics. Only this one - Sorry Members! Perfect blending of Red, Yellow, and Green! One of the most detailed members of the Justice Society of America and I loved the two logos one on his yellow mask in red - in shapes of a Hawk and in his chest surrounding by a red circle. I dig his boots of red and yellow and most importantly his grey wings to complete the outfit. I wished Hawkgirl was more like this! He's at Number 11! I love Hawkman, but of all the various masks Carter Hall has worn, I'm afraid the yellow cowl is the one I like the least. I much prefer the short beaked hawk head he wore before that one, or even the metallic one from the late 1970s (below). Joe Staton drew a panel in a JSA story where he shows all of Hawkman's various helmets lined up on a shelf, pretty much as a throwaway gag.

I've never understood why they insisted on sticking with the yellow cowl for pretty much every post Golden Age appearance of the character up to the 1990s (except that brief period with the metal helmet) when it barely featured at all in his original Golden Age run.

I'd suspect two reasons: - To keep him more distinct from the Earth 1 Hawkman
- It's probably a lot easier to draw

It's very dull by comparison with any of his hawk head looks, though.

Not really as it would have meant pushing Black Canary back to 1941. (Although they did try something like that with one of the Holiday Specials.) Roy Thomas wanted EC's Moon Girl to replace the Golden Age Wonder Woman, but DC dropped the ball. That is a wonderful factoid. I've never even heard of Moon Girl, but I love what Roy Thomas did with Golden Age heroes.

OK, I've been away for a couple of weeks, so I've had some catching up to do.
Air Wave - I like the green & yellow, and the helmet/hood, and the chest insignia. Pretty cool, overall/ Aquaman - I've never seen him with yellow gloves. Interesting, though to be honest, I prefer the green gloves. Green Arrow - I like it. I like the green & red, and I like the hat, though I don't know how it stays on when he's sighting. Plastic Man - I have to admit not being a huge and of this. Maybe it's the bare feet and no toes, I don't know. John Quick - An OK costume. Liberty Belle (I like how Johnny Quick & Liberty Belle rank right next to each other) I like it. It has a slightly military look to it, and is more practical than many other superhero costumes. Max Mercury - Decent costume. I like the big collar, though it's not very practical or aerodynamic. Mary & Marvel Junior - great, as they're derivative of Captain Marvel's costume, but not as good as the original. Doll Man & Doll Girl - Meh. Bat-Girl - I've always liked this costume, for some reason. I think the first time I ever saw it was in an issue of Batman Family, and I remember loving that series. Robin - Love the color combination, hate the shorts. I prefer the modern version, with the pants. Otherwise, a good costume, though yes, the shorts as a nod to his circus acrobat background. Steel - A decent costume. I'm not crazy about the Y-shaped series of stripes on the torso, and the fin doesn't work for him, but otherwise a good costume. Bulletman & Bulletgirl - OK costumes. The bullet helmets are interesting. Dr. Occult - Plain, but cool. Uncle Sam - A classic, more or less. Mr. Terrific - Too much of a mish-mash for me. I like the hood, and I definitely have a weakness for any of the red/green/yellow color combinations in superhero costumes, but I don't like the boots or the shirt under the jacket, and I'm not too sure about the "Fair Play" on his chest, though I agree with the sentiment. Miss America - I like the look, but not a very practical costume for fighting crime. Tex Thompson - Sleek, and like Zorro with red. What's not to like? Phantom Lady - Woo Woo! Hubba hubba! Starman - I love that red, green & yellow, again, plus I like the cowl, and I'm OK with the fin, again, though it would be a little better without it. Hourman - Cool look. I love the hood. Hawkman - I'd prefer a shirt. At least he has a nice assortment of helmets to choose from. Captain Marvel - I love it! He would probably be number one on my list. I love the colors, the lightning symbol, the boot, and especially the cape! Batman - Another very cool costume which would make my top 5. Supergirl - Meh. I like the skirt, though.

Number SevenAlter Ego: Jay Garrick I just loved the Steel Helmet, the Red and Yellow Shirt, and the Blue Leggings of the Flash here. It's quite contemporary of it's day and it's a definitive by choice here. I just find it bold, striking, and image is perfect for a Super Speedster of it's day! I had a hard time finding him a spot because he was hovering between Number 14 to Number 5. The next two in my opinion are worthy to be Number 5 and 6 on my list. I loved his Steel Helmet so much and also loved the golden wings that are attached to it. And, not to mention his boots too ... they also have Wings attached them too. Lots of references to Mercury and that's why I chose him at Number 7 on my list.

It's the helmet that really makes Jay Garrick's costume for me. It feels like it should be ridiculous but isn't. I do have to wonder where he keeps it when he is in his civilian identity, but I guess the advantage of superspeed is that you could always run and fetch it whenever you needed to change into costume.

This is a darn good question, Foxley!

Number SixAlter Ego: Dinah Drake Lance Sexy Fishnets, classy boots, fancy jacket, and All-American good looks of a Crime-Fighter should be. I like one aspect of her costume is her collar around her neck for eye appeal - the best example of that is this photo below that I found in the internet. You just can't go wrong with it. It's Simple and very Elegant! I never, ever, cared for when she wore a mask - it's crazy when she puts on her blonde wig during Crime Fighting! My Top 5 is coming your way ... Who will be my top dog in my Countdown?

Answered your own question there, I think. Anyway, I can forgive any minor illogicalities surrounding Jay Garrick, since he's my favourite American comics character of all time (and would be my favourite comics character of all, if not for Captain Britain).

Is it just me or does Black Canary have one of the sexiest costumes ever?
In fact, why are DC's female heroes so much sexier than Marvel's? I mean, they've got Wonder Woman, Zatanna, Huntress, Power Girl, Harley Quinn and the aforementioned Black Canary just for starters. I'm very much a "Marvel guy", but DC's women do seem to have far sexier costumes than their Marvel counter-parts.
