50 DC Comics Costume Design - Golden Age of ComicsI'll start by sharing #50 and working my way up to #1 of the best GOLDEN AGE OF COMICS costumes of that era. I've may have made a few errors along the way and please bear with me on that. I will do two heroes/heroines a week starting on Sundays and Thursdays. I will share some scans from the internet as well. I'm not going to get technical and/or detailed on each of the Detective Comics characters that I'll be sharing with you on this thread. I've spent a good part of 3 weeks working on this and I wanted to make this thread an enlighten one and please bear with me as I share on Sundays and Wednesdays.

#50 StripesyAlter Ego: Pat Dugan
It's plain and simple costume design that's befitting to his character Stripesy and one of the easier heroes to draw in that timeframe and having said that it's a classic design smooth and simple with miminal of ease. One aspects of this design is the bottom is very much like Superman's and back in those days a Superman Artist can draw him quite well with very little effort. He often paired with Star Spangled Kid and that's makes this duo quite an entertaining one indeed. I loved him in All Star Squadron, Seven Soldiers of Victory, and Justice Society of America. He is also a member of two other groups but I get my kicks in the three groups that I've mentioned here. So he's #50 on my list of the best costumes design in the DC Comics - Golden Age of Comics.

#50 Scans of StripesyOne of my favorite teams in that era; the Seven Soliders of Victory of which he was a contributing member of that team. Another favorite of mine ... Member of the All-Star Squadron - located in the upper left hand corner - 1st Row #49 on Wednesday

Looks like an interesting endeavor, Mecha--thanks! Re Stripesy: Love that the grown-up was the sidekick here, complete with a kid-like monicker.

Hmmm...this could be an interesting thread. I'm pretty ignorant about vast swathes of DC character history outside of the Batman/Superman/Wonder Woman trio (and Jonah Hex). I'd never even heard of Stripesy for example, so...yeah...I'll be following this thread with interest.

#49 AtomAlter Ego: Al Pratt It's unique high-waisted trunk that has two interlocking belts in Brown that makes it's very unique and very original back then when he fought as member of the Justice Society of America and as member of All-Star Squadron as well. I wished he had more color to this costume but when I look at it from the distance - to me the color of brown in his trunks and arm bands are displayed the most and I don't even see the red trim of his orange tunic shirt that he has on. This design made him looks more muscular and that's the beauty of his costume here. I find this design - overall a very unusual and the concept of him wearing a blue cape with it's matching hood/mask made him looks rather distinquished and added him more a mystery man to conceal his identity as Al Pratt. To be honest here, this is only costume that I ever saw of him during my days of reading Justice Society of America and All-Star Squadron. In my next post - a series of scans that I will be showing you in a moment made this reader frustrated over the Comic Book Stores owners that don't even bother showcasting this image below that made me wonder that's there is another costume that I didn't know about. On to the scans that's I wanted to share from the internet and I've spent some time in the past few days sharing these to you.

Scans of the AtomThis is the other costume that I wasn't exposed to and I was shocked to learned this back in the mid-1980's that made me upset to the Comic Book Stores Owners that did not share this Atom at all. Matter of fact, I've kind of liked this one better because it's has more color but the other one has more a certain appeal that I liked so much. One of the early (see 2nd Picture / Below) picture of Al Pratt better known to us as the Atom, early panel from his membership to the Justice Society of America. He was a college student when he started his crimefighting days back in the Golden Age of Comics. Hard-Nosed and Tough as Nails. That's why I've liked him so much! He was affectionally called The Mighty Atom back in the Golden Age of Comics. Number 48 is coming up tomorrow; and I will be doing one a day - Mondays to Fridays! - I'm giving myself the weekend off! Cool Micro Hero of Al Pratt - The Mighty Atom!

In the early installments of the Atom's feature in All-American Comics (the first 5 are reprinted in JSA All-Stars Archives Volume 1), the costume seemed designed to, well, show off his butt: his cape was very short and those brown briefs were cut like a thong in back, and artist Ben Flinton seemed to find an opportunity to show him from the back quite frequently. It looks a little kinky from a modern perspective, although you'd have to be pretty strange to be able to get off on Flinton's drawings, which were, to put it very kindly, rather primitive.

#49 Atom Again, this is something new for me...I don't recall ever seeing that version of Atom before. It's an unusual costume, what with the high-waisted leather trunks and buckles, but I kinda like it.

I love the blue hood/ cape. That is a great look. Yeah, the shorts & belt are an odd look, but it does look like a weightlifting belt, which makes sense for Al Pratt. Plus, a body builder would want to show off his legs, hence the shorts. I'm used to this costume from some All Star Comics reprints as well as the All-Star Squadron. I'm not sure if I've seen the costume with the yellow pants.

One of the things I like about Golden Age costumes in general is that they tend to look like something you could actually construct and wear -- they have buttons and straps and laces holding them together. The trend starting in the Silver Age was these completely seamless leotards that make you wonder how the hero would manage if they had to take a bathroom break in the middle of a mission.
