Sandman, especially as rendered by Craig Flessel, is pulp perfection. The Simon/Kirby union suit that replaced his original look is a rare mis-step for the duo, removing all of the character's mystique and reducing him to one of a hundred (or a thousand) other non-descript heroes.

Joe & Jack don't get the blame, Phil. . . Darn it! I think that's the second time you've had to remind of that fact, Rob. Sorry. You're right, of course. As any sane person naturally would.

I tell ya, he gets no respect! The Sandman, in his traditional garb, has one of the (if not the) most inauspicious Silver-Age re-introductions of any veteran hero. Here is his triumphant return, "supporting" The Batman in JLA #46:

#38 Black CondorAlter Ego: Richard Grey, Jr. Jim Steranko and Lou Fine are the only two artists that I can think of make Black Condor tick. I was a Black Condor fan from 1967 to 1975 grabbing every single issue of Black Condor from the countless bins from the Comic Book Store that I go to getting on my hands of a nickel and/or dime of used Black Condor Issues. It is the most unique costume - something out of science fiction, fantasy, and done in a way quite shockingly back then and I often wonder how they managed to get this? To this approval, the answer is I've don't really care and having said that - I think this design and concept is so radical that I was literally stun by the beauty of his unique cape, costume, the diamond shape details, the wristbands that connected to his cape, and uniqueness of the shape of his costume that left me an impression that I can't adequately describe. It's amazing costume - and drawn beautifully by Steranko and Fine.

#37 Crimson Avenger and WingAlter Ego: Lee Walter Travis (Crimson Avenger) Wing How (Wing)DC Comics answer (sort of) to Green Hornet and Kato's popularity and my only 2 for 1 - Before Pre-Crisis - The Seven Soldiers of Victory - See List below for the complete list and it's alter egos. Crimson Avenger (Lee Travis) Star-Spangled Kid (Sylvester Pemberton) Stripesy (Pat Dugan) Vigilante (Greg Sanders) Shining Knight (Sir Justin) Green Arrow (Oliver Queen) Speedy (Roy Harper) Wing as "unofficial eighth soldier" ... Wing was the Unofficial Eight Soldier and I felt that it was grave injustice to Wing because they included Speedy (Roy Harper) in the ranks. Both wore similar costumes - pure and simple and quite colorful indeed. Both had "Fins" just like Ray that appeared on this thread for no apparent reasons - just for the fun of it. It would be better if they added yellow gloves to Crimson Avenger's costume. But, I'm not complaining about it at all. I find these two exciting, adventurous, and made a lasting impression in the original incarnation of the Seven Soldier of Victory.

Scans of Crimson Avenger and WingGreat Pictures of Crimson Avenger here. Another Great Picture of the Original Seven Solider of Victory ... I thought it was rather cute for DC Comics - to add "Plus One" in this picture above! From Adventure Comics 438-443.

I can't get behind Crimson Avenger at all. His original costume was pulpy goodness. The latter, like Sandman's, was generic superhero fair.

Jerry Ordway also drew an excellent Black Condor.

#36 Star Spangled KidAlter Ego: Sylvester Pemberton One of the more contemporary, stylish, and streamline costumes of it's day. It's sleek, the modernistic red belt make the costume even more in tune of it's day of what a mystery men should be. I like the boots, the colors, and all the white stars on his costume - to me it's has a certain flair about it. I wished Stripesy had a better costume - but with these two together; I can see why they did it like this. Six Soldiers down and 1 to go. I'm a huge Seven Soldiers of Victory Fan!

I love the Crimson Avenger costume, as I am a sucker for red + yellow superhero costumes. Also, I know know why he has that fin atop his head, thanks to MechaGodzilla previous link for the Ray.
The Black Condor...between him and Hawkman, what's up with flying superheroes needing to go shirtless?

Yeah, talk about generic--here Sandy looks just like Bucky (with different colors). I think Simon's written that he designed the Bucky outfit, didn't he?
