I'm in North Carolina, an hour away from Emerald Isle, in a tiny town no one knows of, not even around here! I live 15 minutes from Camp Lejeune. Sorry, I'm trying to put the pin in the map for you guys, but even locals never understand where I live when I say Maysville!

I'm 57 and Kurt's 56. You're missing some good times. Even if you don't go to the con, you're welcome at the dinner. I could make it for dinner - but I run a club and I would advise you to send me a private message regarding this dinner in early November. I wait patiently for your PM.

Never spent any time to speak of in NC to speak of, other than most of a week visiting my then-sister-in-law in Cullowhee, over near Asheville & the Tennesee border.

I'm born and raised a Cajun in New Orleans, so I'm even deeper southern in my roots! Cullowhee is a great place, and I like the mountains a lot! They're beautiful! So, it's a great spot to visit NC. Where I'm at there's not much to check out. Maybe a little, but nearly as much over in the western part of the state where you were! Did you like it in Cullowhee at all? You're in Alabama, right?

Yes, ma'am -- Montgomery. Pretty much the middle of the state. I've been here for going on 13 years, & it's perfectly OK, but my heart is in my native Arkansas. (Grew up in the extreme SW corner of the state, about 35 miles east of the Texas border & 20 miles north of the Louisana line; spent most of my adulthood ... well, till the last almost 13 years, obviously, in Little Rock/North Litte Rock.) Or would be if I had a heart. Or maybe I do, but since it's 400-odd miles away, I don't act like it. Or something.
As for New Orleans, I lived across Lake Pontchartrain in Slidell from 8/88-2/90 before crawling back to my old newspaper in Little Rock.
Which sums up every place I've ever lived, other than not quite 3 years in the Phoenix (along with a summer in Tucson) area for grad school back during World War I.

Oh, yeah -- you asked about Cullowhee. I did like it. My first mother-in-law (RIP; she died just a couple of months ago) was from that area, & her middle daughter was going to grad school at WCU at the time. Very nice area. Even though it was May, IIRC, the heat was perfecty bearable, which likely wouldn't be the case at that time of year in either Arkansas or Alabama, much less south La. Could be my memory sanitizing things, though; that was 1982.
That visit highlighted a rather memorable driving trip -- me, my first wife & her mother in their 1980-or-so LeBaron, from Phoenix up to southern Michigan (to see her mother's parents), over to West Virginia & down to North Carolina, then through Knoxville for a day at the World's Fair, & across Arkansas & eventually Texas (always a seeming eternity) & New Mexico to return to Phoenix.

Currently living in a small town about 30 minutes south of Fort Worth, Texas.
Born and partially raised (till age 12) just outside Baltimore, Maryland.
Lived in Toronto, Ontario for more than 30 years after the age of 12.
Moved to New Jersey in 2002 and lived there for 7 years, before emigrating to Texas about 5 years ago.
I seem to have misplaced a few families along the way ...

Since I vote Democrat and don't own a gun or a hat, I have difficulty thinking of myself as a Texan. ;-)

Cool! I've passed through Montgomery a great many times in my life. My biological parents never really got along and during the many custody battles, my six younger siblings and I would get pulled from Louisiana to North Carolina. But, growing up, I've lived in lots of places all along the southern area. Virginia to Louisiana, if you stay along the ocean, but Tennessee, Kansas, Oklahoma, and West Virginia are there, too! Arkansas is a pretty place, too, it's obvious why your heart would still be there! And, that's ok about not having your heart! Mine's out there somewhere, too! I think... How was it in Slidell? Growing up, I was always told to stay away from there. Never got a full story as to why, I mean, I never heard anything bad about it in the news, at least no more than anywhere else. I adore Lake Pontchartrain, though! I loved crossing the Causeway, and looking out at the expanse of water. But, not nearly as much as the daily ferry rides across the Mississippi River to New Orleans! You were really close to two state borders! I think that's really cool! I've always wanted to live close to a border, myself! That sounds like it was a fun trip! When you visited Cullowhee! I agree, the heat is bearable that time of year! It's the cold I can't stand! Despite living here for near about 7 years now, I'm still not used to the cool and cold months! Knoxville's a great place too! Did you ever see Gatlinburg or Sevierville, Tennessee? One last question: World War I? Didn't that war happen in 1914 to 1918? (Please correct me if my dates are wrong!) Unless I read wrong, you said Grad School? That would mean about you were about 20, maybe 23. That would mean you're over 100 years old! At least pushing to near about 120! Is there something I'm not aware of Mr. Dan B. in the Underworld?

Well he is in the underworld (great googly moogly sir, how many time s do I have to tell you, you cannot renegotiate the terms of that deal you made for Brother Power the Geek #3), so it's likely Dan, that magnificent southern bastard that he is, has been dead for some time and is just a shade haunting these here boards. Barring that, there's dirt that calls him sir because he's their elder and he is officially an old curmudgeon...but he's also prone to hyperbole.... -M

So, essentially, I'm either talking to a dead guy, an immortal (which could be a demon, a vampire, etc), or someone who exaggerates everything...Cool!

Since I vote Democrat and don't own a gun or a hat, I have difficulty thinking of myself as a Texan. ;-) Paul Kersey overcame those same stereotypes while living in NY, you can too I was born and [partially] raised in Mississippi, then moved to SC, CO, FL, OK, AK, and now back to CO in the span of some 12 years. It's been a trip, to say the least.

Another Texan! Which is to say, at least two too many. (As has been noted previously, as not only a native Arkansan but one born perilously close to the Texas state line, I am required by birth & breeding to loathe any & all aspects of the Lone Star State.)
