#40 VixenAlter Ego - Mari Jiwe McCabe First AppearanceAction Comics #521 (July 1981) Bronze Age Costume Features that I like the mostFierce, Modern Jungle Look, the Shadowing Effects of Black Unique Hairstyle of Mari, Cool Red Belt and Boots. Reminds me (sort of) of Marvel's Wolverine one of my favorite X-Men! Great Pictures of Vixen in Action! And this is what Vixen would have looked like, had her original solo series not been a victim of the DC implosion and failed ever to actually be published...

#39 Wildcat IIAlter Ego - Yolanda Montez First AppearanceInfinity Inc.# 12 Bronze Age Costume Features that I like the mostHer Red Hair and Grey Whiskers and of course her magnificent all dark blue outfit that makes her bold as a crime-fighter that she really is. Great Pictures of Wildcat in Action! This is the main reason why I ranked her at #39 because of the three colors Dark Blue, Grey, and Red all working together in unison making her more unique than the Ted Grant's version. And finally, here's a promotional pic for the then yet to be published Infinity Inc series, featuring (on the bike, between Power Girl and Silver Scarab) La Garro, a character who never actually appeared in the book, but was reimagined as Yolanda Montez!

About that Vixen that you've shared with us and I'm quite familiar with and I find this version is not my cup of tea and therefore I've put this out of the running for the 50 characters in my line-up. It's a little too odd for me and therefore not my favorite Vixen outfit. Sorry, tingramretro!

Forbush-Man, the early years? I'd never noticed that! The likeness is uncanny! Could Irving be Ma Hunkel's illegitimate offspring?

#37 Blue BeetleAlter Ego - Ted Kord First AppearanceThe new series was short-lived, and in the pages of Captain Atom #83 (cover-dated November 1966) through #86, Charlton introduced Ted Kord, a student of Dan Garrett's (note the changed spelling) who took on the role when Garrett died. Kord was an inventor hero, using a variety of gadgets. This Beetle received his own series in 1967, but the entire Charlton "Action Heroes" line of comic books ceased publication in 1968. With the rest of the Charlton line-up, he was sold to DC Comics in 1983 and appeared with several incarnations of the Justice League. Silver Age (Origin) Bronze Age (Several incarnation of JLA)Costume Features that I like the mostYellow Goggle Eyes/Mask. Great Contrast of Light and Dark Blue, Fantastic Beetle Insignia that was done right and the black trim and I almost forgot the cool white decorative belt buckle too. Great Splash Picture of the Blue BeetleThe Blue Beetle BugOne of the coolest transportation for any superhero made. It was hit when I first laid my eyes on it. Cool Pictures of Blue Beetle Here

#42 Green Arrow - 2nd Version Neal Adams put enough thought into his Green Arrow redesign to account for the effect a bow string has upon the arm when it rubs against it after firing an arrow. It's for this reason that Green Arrow's gloves always looked as if they had been put on backwards to me as a kid. It was only a few years ago that I learned that the reason that it's the inside of Green Arrow's upper arm that is covered more than the back is to protect it from burns resulting from the bowstring rubbing against it over and over. Likely something only archers would appreciate, but it's testament to the research Adams undertook in designing the costume.
Though not really part of the costume, I think the biggest gamble on the outfit might be the Van Dyke beard. Though I prefer GA's original look, I have to admire Adams for going for such a radical alteration as opposed to simply tweaking things here and there.
I so much prefer this version of GA's costume to the original. And the beard is an inspired touch. It gives GA that swashbuckler feel that adds so much to his characterisation. For the first time, Green Arrow became something other than a pale clone of Batman.

For the Record - if I had to choose between the Original Green Arrow (the one with the red gloves) and the 2nd Version with the two tone green with the Blonde Goatee/Van Dyke look - I still prefer the Original over anything!

... the 2nd Version with the two tone green with the Blonde Goatee/Van Dyke look ... And--à la Ma Hunkel and Forbush Man--could Ollie and Fandral the Dashing be long-lost brothers? Fandral debuted in the Tales of Asgard feature in Journey Into Mystery/Thor and at some point moved over into the main Thor feature; here's a Steranko drawing of him.
