Back issues of Tornado itself seem to be highly priced, unfortunately, I find after a quick look online. Going by the covers, it looks like an unusual mix of stories - SF, horror, sports, all kinds of stuff. Actually, that eclectic approach was quite common in IPC's weekly anthology titles, and in DC Thomson's for that matter. Hurricane was another one from IPC that tended to have a mix of stories from different genres. Likewise Hotspur at DCT.

I was never a fan of any of the Tornado strips and was quite glad to eventually see them all go. Starlord however contributed so much more to 2000AD after its sad demise. Pity there wasnt the audience to support both as I thought it stood on its own quite well. As you say, there wasn't enough of an audience to support two SF themed weeklies, but Starlord was actually selling better than 2000 AD at the time, apparently. The reason they cancelled Starlord and moved its moved popular strips into 2000 AD instead was simply because 2000 AD, being on cheaper paper, had lower production costs. As for Tornado, I must admit I was very fond of The Mind of Wolfie Smith, and was sorry when it disappeared from 2000 AD. I have the original art from one of the later installments, and it's beautiful.

Possibly the least surprising twist in comics history has just occurred: Judge Dredd, who was spectacularly killed off several weeks ago when the ship he was in exploded while taking him to emergency medical attention, has been revealed to be...not dead after all. I'm shocked.

I never collected the mag itself, but I was in London in the early 90s and read a friend's copies who had a lot of the series. I did collect the Eagle Comics and Quality Comics reprints as well as the Titan book collections of the strips I particularly enjoyed.
I was there for the brief period when they were doing a more adult spinoff line. I skipped Revolver but I have the complete collection of Crisis, as well as most of the Euro one-shots.

Crisis, I always thought, was a very underrated title. And it basically gave the world Garth Ennis, which is reason enough to appreciate it all by itself.

Early Crisis was amazing. Lost it's way towards the end with the likes of the Real Robin Hood and Felini.
Loved Revolver though. An under-rated piece of class. The Specials (Horror/Romance) are amongst the best comics I've ever read.
Going back, I was also a big fan of Tornado. The Angry Planet was one of the greatest stories that should have been in 2000AD. Black-Hawk was terrific. Very disappointing when it went sci-fi. Yeah, fairly funny but you don't want a documentary on World War II to turn into Dad's Army. Wagner's Walk was an unusual but expertly written tale of German prisoners. The artwork to Victor Drago was inspired. Beautiful stuff.

I liked Torndo, too, but it never really made sense that when the merge with 2000 AD came about, they quickly concluded Angry Planet, an actual sci-fi strip, and instead gave a historical strip a sci-fi makeover to make it fit! Wagner's Walk was very well done, though it's a shame they didn't just make the lead character Hellman. my favourite character, though, was Wolfie Smith. The only pieces of original 2000 AD artwork that i own are five pages...one complete installment...of The Mind of Wolfie Smith.

I rather liked Dare at the time, but looking back on it, it now seems somehow less clever and more just pointlessly mean spirited than it did then. I'm actually finding myself having that reaction to a lot of Grant Morrison's stuff these days.

Dare was alright but far from the best thing in it. I'd sooner read the likes of Dire Streets and Pinhead Nation.
