I can actually accept Inhumans, Absorbing Man, and a portal to another planet as somehow fitting into this universe they've created, but Ghost Rider is so completely out of place on this show, it isn't funny. How so?

How so? If they keep the mystical aspect of his origin, it doesn't fit with the scientific aspect of the show up to this point. I get that with Dr. Strange coming out in November, the MCU may be trying to incorporate more of the mystical into its offerings, but it just seems like this an odd place to do it, where they could have done it better in Netflix shows such as Iron Fist or Moon Knight.

I thought GR was actually quite perfect, and loved that they made him a serial killer, because that's pretty much what he always has been.
meanwhile, what was that in the box (that escaped) ? I'm not up on my Marvel villains, and so had no idea whom that was supposed to be?

Episode 4.1 was passable. The GR effects were actually pretty well-done for TV budget, but I still stand by my statement that the supernatural doesn't belong on this show, so that character and whatever was in the box stuck out like sore thumbs for me. I am, however, intrigued about who the new director is, as well as seeing where they go with the LMD storyline, so at least the show has that going for it.

Meanwhile over here we finally got SHIELD season 2 and Agent Carter (both seasons).
Just finished season 2 and started on the first episode of Agent Carter, I'm liking Carter a lot more, but then again Agents needed quite a bit of warmup.
Agents of SHIELD season 2: Kyle MacLachlan was by far the highlight of the series, though the Mr. Hyde form was a disappointing.

Saw a blurb from Marvel that says what was in the box ties into the Dr. Strange film. so take from that what you will.

I suppose the mid-season plot swerve could take in the Dr Strange film this time - that's due out in October some time, so the timing would fit.
I thought the first episode was OK, but there was an awful lot of expository dialogue - hopefully that will improve as the new setup becomes more apparent.

First episode I actually paid half attention to in a while. Not bad. GR was kindve cool. Looked good but yeah the supernatural aspect is kindve out of place. And the ghost stuff seemed a bit silly. Just wish I gave a damn about anyone on the show. May is really the only interesting cool likable character. Fitz/Simmons and Coulson are ok but dull and stale at this point. And I've really grown to dislike daisy and the actress who plays her.

I like Mac. He's level-headed, honest, loyal and doesn't come burdened with all sorts of personality issues. I really hope they don't redshirt him at some point to make the show edgier.

I am fan of Mac as well. Down-to-earth guy with no special abilities like Daisy, no big brain like Gemma and Fitz, and no super fighting skills like May. Just a guy with a shotgun axe. And I doubt they redshirt him. They already did the "kill the minority character" riff with Tripp in Season 2, and with this being presumably the last season, there's no need to get rid of a guy that fans seem to like better than the rest of the cast.

The second Ghost Rider appearance was better than the first one, I thought; there is a certain depth to the character's background that was only hinted at in the first episode and that suggests some thought went into it. I was intrigued.
I'm also pleased that the new director of SHIELD isn't someone we knew; it tells of an expanding storyline and not one looking in on itself. Even the connection to the mystical side of the Marvel universe, which screamed "WE HAVE A DOCTOR STRANGE MOVIE COMING UP IN A FEW WEEKS FOLKS" in the last episode seemed to work better this time around; I really like the idea of people looking at magic through a scientific/technological eye.
With all the good stuff on TV today there's limited available time, but I'll keep watching for the time being.

Since the most-recent episode aired two weeks ago, I won't bother with spoiler tags, but I really geeked out when they referenced the Darkhold in that episode. If they're going to go full-on mystical with GR and tying into Doctor Strange, I'm cool with them bringing in more elements like that, rather than having the explanation for the "ghosts" and GR be science.

If they're going to go full-on mystical with GR and tying into Doctor Strange, I'm cool with them bringing in more elements like that, rather than having the explanation for the "ghosts" and GR be science. I think they'll go the movie-Asgard way, Captain, and have their cake and eat it; instead of saying that ghosts are "antineutrino-entangled delocalized phenomena" or some such, they can have Fritz say that "magic is a science we can't yet explain". That leaves the mystery intact. In a sense, it would in fact be perfectly sound. "Science" is nothing more than a process to understand the universe. Since magic exists in the Marvel Universe, it can be studied by science (even if it cant be understood as readily as, say, electricity). It has a measurable effect on our world, and therefore can be studied. I really enjoyed Fritz Leiber's novel "Conjure wife", in which a mathematician learns that the old adage "all women are witches" is actually true. Beyond the joke, the plot involved the guy analyzing spells and drawing a rough mathematical chart of how much eye of newt and toe of frog to mix to obtain a particular effect. The atrocity archives by Charles Stross are also in that vein, with people understanding some basic rules of magic allowing them to deal with Lovecraftian entities.

The show has apparently been renewed for a fifth season. Considering it's been getting better each season, this is good news!
That may or may not work, depending on how the subject matter is handled. The first season's use of Asgardian lore did nothing for me, but using the SHIELD/HYDRA conflict from the winter soldier resulted in excellent story arcs. The recent use of Dr. Strange-ish themes (The Darkhold, Ghost Rider) also worked surprisingly well. And all the while, as characters grow and are better defined, they cease to be the bland cyphers from the early episodes; like the cast of ST:TNG in the old days, they sometimes become more important than the plot itself.
Looking forward to the season finale tonight (although I'll probably just watch it on the weekend. I'm not that big a fan yet!)

I loved the first season and flew through it marathon-style (can't remember another time I did that) but haven't seen anything further, because Netflix never got those discs.
