OMG! PAT PARKER, WAR NURSE! I never heard of her before but she sounds PRETTY AWESOME! She is definitely awesome! Trina Robbins wrote about Pat in one of her books (may have been The Great Women Superheroes). Loving this thread btw!

The Silver Age:
Bee-Man-Created by Otto Binder & Bill Draut 1st appearance Double Dare Adventures (Harvey) #1 Dec 1966
Disgruntled technician Barry E. Eames (groan on the initials) sabotages the landing of a rocket ship so as to rob it of its meteorite samples. Instead he finds alien bees which transport him to their world. He returns to earth garbed in the Bee Peoples's armor and becomes a super-crook. By the 2nd issue he has a change of heart and joins the F Bee I. Then he gets canceled. Be Seeing you.
Never read his stories and I don't think I'll ever get the ..pleasure. No Red Bee he.
"New Look" Blackhawks-New Look Created by Bob Haney, Chuck Cuidera & Dick Dillon 1st appearance Blackhawk (DC) # 228 Jan 1967
The Blackhawks become super-heroes for 14 issues
They took a stale, antiquated, boring comic and turned it into a very bad book. Silly can be cute but bad is bad. This was atrocious. DC's heroes like Superman, Batman and the Flash confronted the old style Blackhawks and declared that "they just don't swing". They didn't offer any compelling solution.
Brain Boy-Created by Herb Castle & Gil Kane 1st appearance Four Color Comics (Dell) # 1330 Apr/June 1962
Dell basically published Disney and Warner Bros properties and hardly ever went for super-heroics. So they probably insisted that this item did not over-excite the youngsters. Brain Boy' Mom was exposed to electricity when he was Brain Fetus. So of course he was born with a full set of ESP powers. But Dell wanted this to be a very dry book. No super costume, no gadgets, no explosive bolts or flames or blasts. Brain Boy just waved his hands around. Gil Kane, a very dynamic artist had to fell very constrained. He was not allowed to employ his famous up-the-nose-angles either
I have not read his recent revival but it has to be an improvement. The original Brain Boy lasted 6 issues
Brother Power, The Geek- Created by Joe Simon 1st appearance Brother Power, The Geek (DC) #1 Oct 1968
Long haired mannequin comes to life and hangs out with hippies
Back in the day when a book got cancelled, there was no announcement and you spent months and months going to various newstands in a hopeless search for the next issue. That's what I did, also looking for the next Bat Lash, Hawk & Dove, Creeper, Angel and the Ape and even Bomba the Jungle Boy. Never knowing if you missed it or not. Very very frustrating
Many years later I learned that DC editor Mort Weisinger absolutely hated the book for its pro-hippy stance and demanded that DC cancel it, even before the sales results came in. But there were 3 issues in the can so DC released them in very limited quantities. Thanks to Mile Hile Comics and a ton of loot, I finally obtained those 3 issues. Brother Power Meets The Beatles and convinces them to stay together. Brother Power vs The Charles Manson Cult. Brother Power at the Chicago Democratic Convention. I sold my collection a while back but you'll never pry these issues away from me
B'wana Beast-Created by Bob Haney and Mike Sekowsky 1st appearance Showcase (DC) # 66 Feb 1967
You'd think by this time you might shy away from the racist white man as jungle god concept. Not DC, a company never known to be progressive. Grant Morrison's update tried to rectify the situation but its a character that never did much for me. But he liked bananas, lots of bananas and thats a good thing

Silly Silver Age Characters and half are due to the Batman TV show it seems Captain Marvel-Created by Carl Burgos & Roger Elwood 1st appearance Captain Marvel (M.F. Enterprises) #1 Apr 1966 Between the Big Red Cheese and the Kree Warrior was this version. Myron Fass published bottom of the barrel comic books and since this name was not being used at the time, he scooped it up and assigned the original Human Torch's creator to the strip. The Captain was an alien on earth, and yelling SPLIT he was able to fling his body parts at the bad guys. yelling XAM put the back together. He had a side kick named Billy Baxton. He fought villains named Dr. Doom, Dr. Fate & Plastic Man amongst others. This was seriously dire stuff. It lasted for just about a year. Captain Science-Created by Walter Johnson 1st appearance Captain Science (Youthful Magazines) # 1 Nov 1950 A pre-code book shouldn't be included in the Silver Age but author Jon Morris likes to keep the ages defined within complete decades I suppose. Anyway, Gordon Dane comes upon a crashed space ship in New Mexico. Shades of Green Lantern, a dying alien is inside and bestows Gordon a gift- a metal box that gives him all the knowledge to face an upcoming alien invasion from the Beast-Men of Rak. The alien also brainwashes Gordon's young protégé, Rip Gary, to completely obey Gordon and give him Rip's family fortune. Isn't there a law against treating a minor like this Beautiful artwork from the likes of Wally Wood and Joe Orlando. 7 installments in total supposedly written by one of baseball's greatest pitchers. Captain Science never did encounter the Beast-Men invasion. God knows what other weird stuff he forced his protégé to do Congorilla -Created by Robert Bernstein & Howard Sherman 1st appearance as Congo Bill More Fun (National) # 56 June 1940 Congo Bill was a long running back up feature in Action comics. A very basic safari guide strip it nevertheless spawned a Columbia movie serial in 1949 and a 7 issue solo title. By 1959 the strip was losing steam, even with the addition of Janu the Jungle Boy. So Congo Bill comes upon a magic ring. Rubbing the ring enables him to switch minds with the other bearer of an identical ring, a huge golden ape. When Congo Bill's mind is within Congorilla, Janu has to put the Bill's body in a cage since its now monkey-minded and might run off. Many scenes of Janu feeding Congo Bill bananas while locked in a cage. A great comic for banana lovers everywhere. Dial H For Hero-Created By Dave Wood & Jim Mooney 1st appearance House Of Mystery (DC) # 156 Jan 1966 Robbie Reed and his alien portable phone dialed up such great heroes like King Kandy, The Human Starfish, Mighty Moppet and Whozit, Whatzit and Howzit. How this book didn't last longer is beyond me. Sockamagee, y'all Dracula-Created by Don Segall and Tony Tallarico 1st appearance Dracula (Dell) # 2 Another attempt by Dell to dive into the super-hero craze by making Dracula a caped crusader. He wears a purple bodysuit and wants to clear the name of his family by doing good deeds. By drinking bat-blood he obtains vampire powers like turning into a bat. Illustrated by one of the worst artists in comics history

The Fab Four-Created by Don Arneson & Sal Trapani 1st appearance Super Heroes (Dell) #1 Jan 1967
John, Paul, George and Ringo have nothing to do with this one. Four school kids go on a visit to the Dell Comics Hall Of Heroes (a very sorry bunch of exhibits). An explosion bestows on them the abilities of the super androids that were on display there (what the story was with the androids was never revealed). Presto-we are now fortunate to meet
EL- he has the letter L on his chest and it stands for laser Hy-he has the letter H on his chest and commands hypersonics Crispy-cryogenics Polymer Polly-makes polymer strands. Has she seen polythene Pam? She's so good looking that she looks like a man
They travel America and battle Johnny Boom Boom (don't ask about his abilities), Nepto the Shark Man, Coal Man, The Clown and a bunch of other clowns
Fatman The Human Flying Saucer-Created by C.C.Beck and Otto Binder 1st appearance Fatman (Lightning Comics) #1
The creators of the original Captain Marvel prove lightning does not strike twice at the same place. Jeepers, you'd think Herbie The Fat Fury would have been enough to satiate the demand for fat super heroes. However plump Van Crawford helps a stranded flying saucer, he is given the power to change into one himself. Good enough to battle the Brainmen of Mars, Syntho The Patchwork Man, Lunita The Moon Witch and Anti-Man. Its rumored Fatman The Flying Saucer had a predilection of kidnapping for unethical probing
Gunmaster-Created by Dick Giordano 1st appearance Six Gun Heroes (Charlton) #59 Oct 1960
Before Bat Lash there was this. Clay Boone was a peace loving type. He abhorred violence for any reason. But when he must, he must after panels of whining about it. He invents numerous types of hi-tech guns including those with gas bombs and flairs. He has a protégé that tags along, Bullet The Gun Boy. Please don't make him shoot. There will be pages of agony about that action if he does
Jigsaw-Created by Joe Simon, Otto Binder & Bill Draut 1st appearance Jigsaw (Harvey) #1 Sept 1966
Colonal Gary Jason, astronaut, is rescued by aliens when he is trapped by an outer space magnetic cone. The aliens rebuild his broken body by replacing parts with multicolored plates. It looks like he can stretch but its actually body parts shifting around. The thought of this is somewhat unsettling but thankfully the artist just made it look silly
Legion Of Superpets-1st appearance Adventure Comics (DC) # 293 Feb 1962
No, no, no this does not belong here. Some much potential and not properly used. We all know Krypto, Comet the Superhorse and Streaky the Super Cat. Add in Beppo the Super Monkey who super flung his feces. When travelling into the future, the Legion Of Super-Heroes mascot, Proty II joined in. But they should have expanded the team past Mort Weisinger's Superman Family. Imagine the thrills to be had if Zook, Rex the Wonder Dog, Itty, Major Myhna and others enrolled.

Dial H For Hero was a fun comic (I've read it in reprints) and one that played off the old Captain Marvel fantasy and took it a step further. But sometimes I wonder if the young blond, bespectacled, superhero-obsessed Robby Reed... ...was based in part on this guy. Roy was active in the fandom movement and he'd corresponded for a few years with Gardner Fox, and as shown in Alter Ego #50, RT proposed plot ideas for the various Schwartz books, JLA, Flash, etc. Plus, he'd worked at DC (Weisinger) for a week of so in mid-1965 before going to Marvel. So he wasn't an unknown quanity to DC. Also, I wonder what would have happened if Roy worked for Schwartz, or even Schiff, instead of Weisinger that fateful June 1965. Would Roy have remained at DC?

Magicman-Created by Richard Hughes & Pete Costanza 1st appearance Forbidden Worlds (ACG) # 125 Feb 1965
Stands to reason since writer/editor Richard Hughes was not a superhero fan, when he jumped in with his own creations they would land with a thud. Tom Cargill is a descendant of famed magician Cagliostro, and while serving in Vietnam his magical powers manifest. He comes back stateside and roommates with his former drill sergeant (I can't suspend my belief that anyone would really do that). 16 magically delicious appearances. And a hit song from the rock group Heart
Miracle Man -Created by Mick Angelo 1st appearance Miracle Man (Thorpe & Porter) # 1 1965
Was Mick Anglo the biggest hack writer for comic books? Here's the evidence: Captain Marvel comics were reprinted in England and were very popular. But Fawcett ceased production after losing the lawsuit to DC. Under Mick Anglo's supervision they came up with a clone of Captain Marvel under the name Marvelman. Magic word, family of Marvels etc etc. OK we can forgive Mick Anglo for that one. That same year Mick Anglo created Captain Universe albeit for just one appearance. Magic word etc In 1958 Spanish Publisher Editorial Ferma asked Mick Angelo to create a character for their market. Viola- its Superhombre, a Captain Marvel clone Mick Anglo split from his English publisher in 1960 and on his own came up with Captain Miracle. They were redrawn Marvelman stories with a different costume In 1965 Miracle Man was born, a variation of Superhombre with another magic word.
Miracles Inc.-Created by Wally Wood 1st appearance Unearthly Spectaculars (Harvey) # 2 Dec 1966
This looks pretty decent in an Inferior 5 sort of way and I'm curious if anyone here actually read it. Its Wally Wood, how can it not be halfway decent? A light hearted supergroup consisting of
Manlet-tall as a bird and eats seeds Misfit-a hairy man-mountain Reflex-speedster who trips a lot Thermo-controls heat and cold and makes coffee Una- look at her and you fall in love Klang-a robot who thinks too much Wizard-sorcery guy
All headed up by a white haired Professor named Who. Superchef the great cook and Kaput a Prince of Jinx joined in their 2nd and last appearance.
Mr. Muscles-Created by Jerry Siegel 1st appearance Mr. Muscles (Charlton) #22 March 1956
Brett Carson former weakling and polio cictim, through sheer force of will walks again, works out really hard and becomes a perfect strongman. Miss Muscles and Kid Muscles join him as the Muscle family. What, no bottled city of muscles? Jerry couldn't pull off another Superman type hit with this creation and Mr. Muscles atrophied after just 2 issues
Nature Boy-Created by Jerry Siegel & John Buscema 1st appearance Nature Boy (Charlton) # 3 March 1956
But Jerry wasn't done yet and had this other idea for a hero. Floyd and Myra's plane crashes over the ocean. They are rescued but their baby boy David is missing. Not to worry, he is found by a bunch of mythological gods who nurture him to puberty and then return him to his parents. If David begs to his gods, they give him a temporary power like lightning bolts, wind and earthquake abilities and so on. But he has to beg or pray. And they have to be in the mood. Seriously

Its Wally Wood, how can it not be halfway decent? Love that splash page! This group sound intriguing and I really dig that amongst all their hi-tech gadgetry they have a record player with multi-disc changer (look towards the bottom of the panel). After all, if you're gonna have a secret base, you might as well have a bitchin' hi-fi in there too!

"Holy Thought Balloons, Batman, our popularity seems to have caused an explosion of ill-thought out superheroes" "Right you are, old chum. It was a dastardly driven plot to capitalize on the surge in sales due to our TV show. Fortunately, for the citizens of Gotham, these fellows did not last too long and we seem to have come to the end of the silver age listing." Nemesis-Created by Richard Hughes and Pete Costanza 1st appearance Adventures Into The Unknown (ACG) #154 Feb 1965 Steve Flint, police detective is run over by a train. The after-life is backed up with recent arrivals so his request to return to earth and avenge his murder is approved. He is given stripped shorts to wear because only the dead would be caught with that on. He can fly, is strong, become invisible, change size-just about anything the writer needs to further the story. However he needs air to breathe so gas and drowning can affect him.So can dwindling sales Peacemaker-Created by Joe Gill and Pat Boyette 1st appearance Fightin' 5 (Charlton) # 40 Nov 1966 The man who loves peace so much he is willing to fight for it. Christopher Smith is a diplomat and inventor of innovative weaponry. He wages a one man war on tyrants. He tries to use non-violent weapons like knock out gas and such. His costume is packed with weapons. His helmet looks like a toilet bowl. DC has revived him from time to time but I've yet to hear a fan extolling his adventures Pow-Girl-Created by Jerry Siegel and Paul Reinman 1st appearance Mighty Comics (Archie) # 43 Feb 1967 The Web is a costumed crimefighter as well as a henpecked husband. He even gets it from his mother-in-law. His wife Rose frets that Thw Web will get hurt so she secretly works out and becomes Pow-Girl to help him out. The Web doesn't recognize this new super heroine is his own wife. She has no powers and doesn't use female gimmicks like gaseous powder puffs. She just kicks butt. Only appeared once but I'm sure she kept that idiot husband of her's in line at home The Sentinels-Created by Gary Friedrich and Sam Grainger 1st appearance Thunderbolt Charlton) Vol 3 # 54 Oct 1966 They were the Peter,Paul and Mary of the spandex set-3 folk singers who got their powers from their landlord. The part time scientist lanlord gave them supercostumes, one for flight, another for strength and the female gets the telepathic sense. The Sentinels argue with themselves quite often and compose god awful folk ditties. They disappeared after trying the purple acid at Woodstock Spyman-Created by Joe Simon and Jim Steranko 1st appearance Spyman (Harvey) #1 Sept 1966 Johnny Chance works for the organization LIBERTY. Disarming a nuke infects his hand. Its amputated and replaced by a cybernetic model. Each finger has its own ability-a black ray, an xray and on and on. The comic book gave you a schematic diagram outlining the fingers and what they could do. Johnny kept extra fingers in his pouch as well. Disturbing, is it not? Ultra The Multi Alien-Created by Dave Wood and Lee Elias 1st appearance Mystery In Space (DC) # 103 Nov 1965 Four alien criminals from different planets are conspiring in an arms deal when Ace Arn, test pilot, happens upon them. The crooks each blast Arn simultaneously with the same weapon that changes the victim into an obediant member of the shooter's race. Therefore Arn becomes 25% of each of the alien species, his body changing into 4 quadrants replicating said species. Since all 4 blasts hit him at once he's not obedient. Happens every day in space. His adventures lasted for 8 issues. Sorry couldn't find a pow-girl image. But here's the comic she appeared

The Final Chapter Of Jon Morris' compendium of lovable losers. Its called The Modern Age which he's basically calling 1970 to present, lumping the Bronze Age and whatever else you want to call subsequent Oh, he has a blog called Gone & Forgotten which I'll check out after I finish his book. Which of these heroes were you subjected to, pleasurably or not? 3-D Man-Created by Roy Thomas and Jim Craig 1st appearance Marvel Premiere (Marvel Comics)#35 Apr 1977 Roy loves the golden and atomic age of comics and his creation gave him a chance, originally set in the 1950s, to shovel in tons of old pop culture and historical references. Polio stricken Hal Chandler and his athletic brother merge when the 3D glasses are worn and 3D Man has the strength of 3 men. Dick Clark and Nixon were some of the villains 3D Man tackled AAU Shuperstar-Created by Unknown 1st appearance The back of assorted comics 1977 A bit of a cheat here. I don't remember this ad spokesman in comic format. Must have blended in with Hostess Fruit Pies and others using that format. AAU Shuperstar wore a tracksuit, had no obvious powers and battled dastardly fiends such as Dirty Sneaker, Sinister Sole and Missile-Toe. Terrible puns and fast footwork ensued. "In my AAU shoes I can outrun all the heels out of the world". I'm a toe-tal failure" moans a crook. Good God. Besides his name, he didn't have a speech impediment. Might be related to our own dupersuper Adam-X The X-Treme Created by Fabian Nicieza and Tony Daniel 1st appearance X-Force Annual (Marvel) # 2 Oct 1993 Embodying every bad character design from the grim and gritty 90s. A half alien/ half mutant with a turned around baseball cap, a mullet, chin whiskers, and blades sprouting all over his leather clad uniform. Blades on the shoulders, blades on the gloves, blades on the arms and thighs, blades on his belt, blades on his knee pads. Don't you want to hug him? The blades made sense, sort of. He had the power to make someones exposed blood ignite. Who wants to form a fan club? Brother Voodoo-Created by Fred Hembeck Len Wein & Gene Colan 1st appearance Strange Tales (Marvel) # 169 Sept 1973 Jericho Drumm, hearing his brother has died, goes back to his Haitian homeland and takes up the position of Brother Voodoo, the hero with the dum-dum-dum drums in the background. He can do just about anything the story calls for. If Zombies are on the loose, Brother Voodoo is your man Captain Ultra-Created by Roy Thomas/George Perez and Joe Sinnott 1st appearance Fantastic Four (Marvel) #177 Dec 1976 A hypnotist tries to cure Griffin Gogol of his habit and instead unlocks Griffin's Ultra-Potential. Immensely powerful with super abilities he creates a costume using just about every color available in comic books at that time. Tries out for the Defenders and they no dice. Has a weakness to fire. Wants to visit The Martian Manhunter for advice but needs directions. Started a stand up comedy act Adam X Captain Ultra

Ahhh, Adam X the X-Treme. The long-rumored "3rd Summers brother", which thankfully never came to pass, this sack of suck had just a handful of appearances in the '90's through 1996, before reappearing 13 years later in the Utopia crossover.
On the other hand, I love me some Brother Voodoo. He showed up last month in the new Doctor Strange #1, which made me absolutely giddy.

Magicman-Created by Richard Hughes & Pete Costanza 1st appearance Forbidden Worlds (ACG) # 125 Feb 1965 Nemesis-Created by Richard Hughes and Pete Costanza 1st appearance Adventures Into The Unknown (ACG) #154 Feb 1965 Morris includes the two covers (below) in his write-ups on American Comics Group heroes Magicman and Nemesis. These covers display artist signatures: "Lou Wahl" on Forbidden Worlds and "Pete Costanza" on Adventures Into the Unknown, even though it's clear that the cover artist for both is Kurt Schaffenberger. KS used pseudonyms for his ACG covers, as Mort Weisinger didn't want his Lois Lane artist moonlighting. "Lou Wahl" was the name of Schaffenberger's maternal grandfather. Later on, when Costanza became the regular Jimmy Olsen artist, Kurt started signing the ACG covers with another pen name, "Jay Kafka." As if this art could be by anyone but Schaffenberger!
