The League Of Regrettable Super Heroes by Jon Morris (2013) looks to be a fun book delineating about 100 superheroes from the Golden Age to modern times that were wonky, weird, forgotten, intriguing and not inherently bad but strange. I'll give you a rundown of what he chose. Feel free to post pictures of the heroes mentioned and any knowledge you might want to share We'll start with the golden age first and they are in alphabetical order 711 by George Brenner. First appearance Police Comics (Quality) #1 Attorney Daniel Dyce is mistakenly sentenced to jail. He breaks out each night , dons a costume, fights crime, and then goes back to his jail cell. 711 is his prison number and while in jail he can hear criminals gossip Amazing-Man by Bill Everett First appearance Amazing-Man Comics (Centaur) #1. Wears suspenders to hold up his shorts. Bites a snake while tied up on his first cover. Attends a lamasery to train for his "ultra manhood". Partnered with Tommy-The Amazing Kid. Barry Dale can do just about everything-atomic strength that can wipe out cities, atomic vision, flight, super-speed and atomic vision that can explode atoms. The Black Dwarf by Paul Gattuso First appearance Spotlight Comics (Harry Chesler Pub) #1 "Shorty Wilson is about 5 foot three and a professional sportsman ( ). He dons a gaucho hat and black robes. He has a team of partners, like the Shadow, to help him. He has no problem killing any evildoer he comes up against. Wasn't Amazing man on the cover of an issue of comic book artist, one drawn by Gil Kane?
In any case, these characters seem to embrace the inherent goofiness of comic-book costumed do-gooders. I'd love to read more about them!

It does look like a fun book, but I'm catching at the 'regrettable' bit. That hint of judgment, of disdain, bothers me. Fantomah is indeed in the book, as is Squirrel Girl; 2 of my favorite characters. Ah well, tastes vary, and it's just a word. I'll probably break down and get the book sooner or later.

I haven't seen much Squirrel Girl but I like what I've seen. I read that she beat Thanos! Ha! I wish she was a DC character so she could take out R'as al Ghul and Deathstroke! Fantomah on the other hand, is one of my favorites. I have both of the Fletcher Hanks reprint books and a Fantomah T-shirt.

The next batch of "regretable" superheroes from Jon Morris' book. And by regretable, I think he means that they could have lasted a longer time, they had potential and still do. He doesn't demean these characters-in fact it seems he loves them. Still with the Golden Age and in alphabetical order. Participation by picture posting and opinions are very much encouraged
Bozo The Iron Man-Created by George Brenner 1st Appearance Smash Comics (Quality) #1 Aug 1939
One of the first comic book robot stars, Bozo was the creation of embittered genius Dr.Van Thorp to be an engine of destruction. He had a weird frozen grin on his face and a propeller beanie. Crime fighter Hugh Hazard defeated the evil doctor had saw the usefulness of Bozo to fight crime. Sometimes he'd control Bozo by remote control, sometimes he'd climb into the robot, sometimes he's ride it on the robot's back. Bozo the robot lasted for 40 issues. His final appearance had children take him apart and use his metal for a scrap drive
Captain Tootsie-Created by C.C. Beck and Pete Costanza 1st Appearance-assorted titles July 1943
Captain Tootsie starred in one page stories, teaching kids science, good manners, survivalism and the pleasures of Tootsie Roll candy. He appeared in all different publications including those from Fawcett, National, Archie and even Sunday newspapers. He even got his own title lasting 2 issues in 1950, fighting aliens on the planet Venus. He looked like Captain Marvel's blonde haired twin brother which should not be surprising due to who his creators were
Captain Truth-Created by Bob Fujitani 1st appearance Gold Metal Comics (Cambridge House) 1945
What made this Captain unique besides wearing a musketeer hat with a big feather was that he was a homeless kid. No origin was given but he lived on the streets as an orphan. He ran for one story only, which got reprinted 17 years later
The Clown-Unknown Creators 1st appearance Spitfire Comics (Harvey) #1 1941
Police commissioner Judd Nolan stares at a paperweight on his desk shaped like a dat jolly clown and is inspired to use that motif to fight crime. He uses a handful of juggling balls packed with knockout gas to smash a crime ring. After a 2nd appearance the circus folded their tents and he disappeared
The Conqueror- Created by Bill Everett 1st appearance Victory Comics (Hillman) Aug 1941
Daniel Lyon's plane crashes and a scientist revitalizes him with cosmic rays that give him super-strength. Immediately he declares he must find and kill Hitler. That's it. His adventures are wall-to-wall action with nothing but his single minded mission but to methodically smash thru every Nazi barring his path to snuff out the fuhrer. Unfortunately only 4 stories were told and he didn't have enough time to bring the war to an early end
