I simply don't get the Legion love. Yes, it's had some very entertaining runs in its history (Shooter/Swan and Levitz/Giffen come to mind) but I just can't take seriously a space opera full of characters named Bouncing Boy, Matter-Eater Lad, Kid Psycho and Infectious Lass. I've felt this way since the '60s and I just don't find them that interesting. If I really need a super-team fix, I'll take the Avengers. the old school JLA or my faves, the Justice Society. They can be pretty absurd too, I grant, but with a different vibe I relate to better. Cei-U! I summon the future schlock! Which is why I own zero Legion comics.

I enjoyed the Great Darkness saga in a limited way: a pretty solid superhero team book, but nothing more than that. About on a par with other well-crafted but strictly conventional superhero series like the Claremont X-Men,though with fewer interesting (to me) characters. Giffen's artwork helped a lot.

The silver age Legion was cool. My only beef with them was that there was too many of them. Yeah, I'd have liked them better if they weren't so damn hard to keep track of. In the time I spent not reading the Legion, I've memorized the line-ups of the Liberty Legion, the Unliving Legion, the Legion of Monsters and the Justa Lotta Animals. (Infectious Lass is the best DC character, though.)

Popular or beloved characters I just don't care for or get the people's love for: Fantastic four Moon knight Thor namorI'm sure there's more but these are the most popular examples I can think of. Only comic book adjacent but I personally hate (yes hate) dr. Who and professional wrestling. I hate a lot of other stuff too but these just came to me and kinda fit the topic. Plus I'm in a bad mood lol. Only worked for me when Bill Everett wrote him - or (to a much lesser extent) his part-time roomie, Roy Thomas. The Lee/Kirby version of Namor is a completely new interpretation of the character that basically craps all over everything Everett was doing. Stan wrote a great and HILARIOUS Namor in Tales to Astonish. I didn't always much care for how he treated Dorma, but for Namor, he was written wonderfully by Stan during Tales to Astonish. He was a typical silver age Stan Lee character, but only with a bit more ego (okay, LOTS more ego). Super dramatic and hilarious.

How can you not love stories like this? It isn't a mere Moby Dick! It's the Super-Moby Dick of Space! And it ate Lightning Lad's arm! Why do people hate fun? I especially love the purple wings and the grumpy look on Super-Moby Dick's face. "I hate Mondays. Maybe this rocketship will get the taste of Lightning Lad's arm out of my mouth. It's worth a try."

Maybe it's because we have super serious, everything-has-a-consequence writers such as Hickman and Remender now-a-days who are just sucking the complete fun out of comics and redefining them to be overpacked and dull-as-heck.

If I want fun, I'd read Archie. But I do not want my super-heroes to be outlandish and campy. I bought Batman Odyssey though so sue me.

If I lived in a world with actual superheroes, I'd want them ALLLL to have names like that. Those are the best names ever. It'd make them seem more tangible. Now I am going to HAVE TO get some Legion. I have some stuff, but not enough. And I will admit that those names are harder to stick at first, and I find myself getting name confused, but that's when you hope you can rely on art and distinguishable costumes. If you ever start seriously looking for LSH stories, try to get one of the collections that has Adventure Comics #340 and ##341. Some years ago, I made a list of my 25 favorite comic books and I used two of my spots on the list to make sure this two-parter was included. It's the first Computo story. A Legionnaire died! A solemn moment on Shanghalla, the cemetery planet for dead heroes. The return of Bouncing Boy! Best of all, the first appearance of the LSH secret backup member The Weirdo Legionnaire! Here's the cover to Adventure #340:

None of us will love long enough to see a film adaptation of Hunchback with enough guts to preserve the novel's relentlessly grim ending. Cei-U! I summon the reeeeeeeal downer! Never read the book, but I have seen the 1923 Lon Chaney film version. How much does that stick to the book? Like every other film adaptation, it chickens out at the conclusion. In the book, Esmeralda is executed and Quasimodo throws himself to his death from the bell tower . No way is Hollywood putting that on screen. Cei-U! I summon the unhappy ending!
