I thought I'd read all the Ditko Spider-Man but I don't remember this version of Gwen Stacy at all. the Bond question probably does deserve its own thread - as do many of the other subjects that have been raised here - but I'll just say here that it's entirely possible that my view is distorted by having read them in the late 70s. I don't remember Bond beating up women in the books or the movies. Is it possible that some confusion has arisen between the fictional character and those notorious statements by Connery? Speaking of which, those quotes are so outrageous that I've always wondered if it was a matter of an old man being manipulated into saying something stupid. Does he have a history of violence against women that he was trying to justify? If so, yes, I doubt I'll ever be able to watch any of his movies ever again. Anyone is welcome to start a Bond Thread. In From Russia with love he slaps the woman in question but to say he beat her up, is overstating it. I think he choked a woman while trying to get info, in Diamonds are forever. AS for Connery's philosophy about women- I've heard that he said that a woman needed to be slapped every once in a while , or something to that effect. Remember two things: 1. He comes from a different era 2. He has been an incredibly handsome person and those type of people get a way with a lot of stuff. Women will take the abuse for fear of losing such a man. Of course, women with low self esteem.

I thought I'd read all the Ditko Spider-Man but I don't remember this version of Gwen Stacy at all. I'm no Spider-man expert but I recall her starting out as a Liz Allen copycat, and Lee slowly making her attracted to Parker. That's when she started to get a personality. It's true she was a Bit%h to him at the beginning .

Ben Grimm and Doom are the only things remotely intetesting about the FF... Early Reed Richards was interesting too. The weak link was always Johnny Storm. Johnny and Sue were both weak links. Sue was pretty pathetic. All she ever did is yell "how can we ever defeat such a powerful foe?" and/or get captured. But yes, Johnny sucked too. Ben carried the book for me, and Reed was very good, too.

Other characters I hated: Rick Jones, Steve Trevor, Frank Drake (from Tomb of Dracula).

I think you were supposed to hate Frank Drake. Cei-U! I summon the big drag! yeah, Rachel Van Helsing was the strong one on that team. Is it true Marvel killed her off? Waste of a good character, if so.

Waste of a good character, if so. Yup, they killed her off after she was turned into a vampire in Uncanny X-Men Annual #6; the story featured the second X-Men versus Dracula match-up. Wolverine got to do it, so a strong female character was knocked off by one of my least-favorites of all time.

I've been refraining from saying anything negative about characters or various series thus far, but prompted by recent posts in the "What Classic Comics Have You Purchased Lately?" thread I've just gotta say... What's with all the love for Marvel's ROM in this forum? I read the start of the series, maybe the first 10 issues or more, when it was first re-printed as a back-up strip in Marvel UK's Star Wars Monthly in the early '80s. I always found the stories to be as dull as dish water, with a crappy, third rate toy as the book's hero and some really ugly Sal Buscema artwork. The high esteem that some people hold this series in amazes me. There. I said it!

I never understood the appeal of ROM either, but then almost everything Marvel came up with in the 80s is lost on me.

But yeah, as far as toy-inspired comics written by Bill Mantlo go, Rom was no Micronauts.

I think of the Frank Miller DD as a late-70s book that carried over into the 80s, like the Claremont/Cockrum/Byrne X-Men. I think MoKF might have lasted till the early 80s as well, but I think of that one as a 70s series too.
