I also got to have a wonderful chat with Jim Shooter today. He was an absolute gentleman, and had tons of great stories and positive things to say about so many people he's worked with over the years. I've met so many nice people at my convention this weekend, but this was a major highlight. This is the print I bought that he signed for me:

One of my favorite reveals was Rond Vidar as a Green Lantern in issue #50 of the Baxter series. I would have loved to have seen more with him in that role. Great looking costume too. 5 Years Later came too soon for my tastes.

I put together a little list of "Top 10 Shocking Moments" in Legion history just for fun, it will be mostly weighted towards the eras I'm most familiar with. Curious what folks think, and if anyone wants to add to it feel free. Also, definitely avoid if you don't want spoilers into Legion history!
The list is in publication order:
1) Sacrifice of Proty (Adventure #312) - Lightning Lad is dead (already heavy for an early Silver Age comic) and the Legion can revive him but at the sacrifice of one of their own lives. They develop a method for it to be "random" but it appears Saturn Girl gamed it so she takes the noble sacrifice. Only to find out their "pet/mascot" shape-changer Proty outwitted all of them and took the sacrifice himself. Who says the Silver Age was all lightweight writing?
2) Triplicate Girl death of one of her 3 bodies (Adventure #340) - I won't cite every Legionnaire death here, but this one was pretty haunting by the nature of it. Again this is a 60's comic, and right on the cover we see one of Triplicate Girl's bodies disintegrating before our eyes. Computo does just that in the comic, and the implication here is that she continues to live through her other 2 bodies, but a part of her is lost forever.
3) RJ Brande is a Durlan and father to Chameleon Boy (Secrets of the Legion #3) - This is a two-for one! Seemingly human Legion benefactor was really a Durlan all along? And he's Reep's dad? Say what?!
4) Shrinking Violet was abducted and replaced by a Durlan spy for months (Legion #305) - There's a reason why this era of the Legion is so beloved, and it's storywriting like this. Not only shocking as a story in itself but would have some long-term implications.
5) Validus is really Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad's son (Legion Annual #3) - Again, pretty brilliant though very sad twist. Darkseid exacts his revenge by abducting one of the twins at birth and through the machinations of time and all that, the child becomes one of their greatest enemies in monstrous form.
6) Death of Karate Kid (Legion Baxter #4) - While all Legion deaths are tragic, this one was a really harsh one. Not only was Karate Kid a longer serving and popular member, but in the story itself, it's not a "brief moment of heroism to save the day" kind of thing. It's a horribly brutal fight with Nemesis Kid where you see him literally dying before your eyes but he goes out as a total hero. Really heavy to read, one of the saddest Legion stories and there have been plenty.
7) Laurel Kent revealed to be Manhunter robot (Legion #42) - This seemed to come out of nowhere! Not much else to say, Laurel we hardly knew ye!
8) Rond Vidar is a Green Lantern (Legion Baxter #50) - Finally a non-tragic one, this was AWESOME. Vidar was always a great character, and being the "hidden keeper" of the GL legacy was a great reveal. I only wish they had spent more time in the subsequent issues letting him do more in that role.
9) The Time Trapper is Cosmic Boy (Zero Hour #3) - OK, in fairness there have been multiple identities for the Trapper. The reveal on this one was just particularly cool, one of the founders and "Rokk" of stability (bad pun) turns out to be one of their worst enemies.
10) Jan Arrah reveal in Legion Lost (Legion Lost #10/11) - This era is a little past my prime reading years, but this series was really amazing. Oh how the "Archie Legion" had matured. Element Lad had been missing but turns out he had now lived eternities and was not the same being they once knew. Really bad things happen, it's some amazing storytelling.

The first, second and fifth moments still resonate with me after all these years, though.

Good topic, and good choices! I don't have the issue numbers handy, but I do have images, so that's something. Other big moments that come to mind: 1) The big reveal of Great Darkness. Also, how many of these characters can you identify from their silhouette? 2) A trio of heroes from a thousand years in the future invite Cosmic Boy to join their super-team because his exploits inspired their formation. 3) That alternate future in which Ma and Pa Kent stand-ins murder baby Kal El. Didn't see that one coming! 4) Orando explodes; Projectra goes dark and assaults Phantom Girl, with Timber Wolf as her accomplice. 5) Dark Mysa was pretty creepy too. 6) Triplicate Girl comes from a planet with a bazillion of her.

Oh, those are great additions!! I almost added Dark Mysa myself How could I forget the Great Darkness reveal?! Good call! The only one I don't remember is #2, I need to look that up, very intriguing looking. Ok, from the shadows on the cover in #1, I'll give it a go from left to right: First 3 are easy, Wildfire, Phantom Girl, Ultra Boy. I can't make up my mind if the next one in Lightning Lad or Element Lad. Definitely Brainiac 5 next. Next one is throwing me off a little as well, maybe a slightly skinny Cosmic Boy? Next I was thinking Saturn Girl at first, but now I'm thinking that might be Dream Girl. And then Timber Wolf kneeling to the right (though could be Cosmic Boy as well) and obviously Dawnstar in the air.

To my knowledge, in pre-Crisis times, there was no mention of an Earth-2 Legion? Definitely interested if someone knows otherwise. This little "altered reality" story from the 90's got me thinking on the topic though: Again, staying in pre-Crisis continuity, what if in this version the Legion came back and recruited Robin instead of Superboy since this is Earth-2? And Robin initially says "but you all have incredible powers, what could I do?". And they basically say "like the original Batman who you eventually took over the role of when you grew up, it's about your courageness, crime-fighting, and detective skills. And you were the first kid hero to do all those things, you're our biggest inspiration." So Robin takes Superboy's role. And maybe some other "Earth-2 inspired" adjustments. Not that every JSA member needs an analog in the future, but maybe a Hawkboy and/or Hawkgirl? Maybe Robin thinks he sees Dr. Fate and says "what are you doing in the future?!", but when Fate takes off his helmet it's a teenager and he says "I'm Kid Fate, a descendant of the original you knew back in your time!". Maybe Vandal Savage and the Ultra-Humanite are still around in the future as well. An Earth-1/Earth-2 Legion crossover could be fun as well maybe like the classic JSA/JLA team-ups?

Yeah, I’m changing that, Earth-2 Legion is now canon. Because as you said in our other thread, EVERYTHING is now canon haha!! EDIT: oh, and zaku, I should have also said, thanks as well for quickly answering my actual question!

Really bad things happen, it's some amazing storytelling. What?? No death of Invisible Kid at the hands of Validus? Superboy starring the Legion of Super-Heroes #203 (August, 1974) delivered a shocking end to a well-loved character at a time when it was still fairly rare for "A-list" superhero characters (within the Legion) to die.
Adding to the grim event was IK's prophetically doomed romance with Myla, a ghost from the "invisible" realm. While Myla promised to take care of him, for the characters (and readers), the death of IK was one of the series' weightiest stories.
The team of Cardy (cover), Bates and Grell were at the top of their creative game.

tarkintino - dang it, how could I have missed this one as well?! From my favorite era to boot, I bear Legion shame missing that on the list. Really good callout, and I so agree on the creative strength you mentioned. I FINALLY met Mike Grell for the first time at the end of last year (and he did an amazing Projectra commission for me, could have been right out of the 70's!).
