To my knowledge, in pre-Crisis times, there was no mention of an Earth-2 Legion? Definitely interested if someone knows otherwise. Someone once asked Bob Rozakis in his "Answer Man" column if there was an Earth-2 Legion. The answer was no, according to Bob.

Soooo, your ideas for an Earth-2 Legion? Right here! Just a starting point: Again, staying in pre-Crisis continuity, what if in this version the Legion came back and recruited Robin instead of Superboy since this is Earth-2? And Robin initially says "but you all have incredible powers, what could I do?". And they basically say "like the original Batman who you eventually took over the role of when you grew up, it's about your courageness, crime-fighting, and detective skills. And you were the first kid hero to do all those things, you're our biggest inspiration." So Robin takes Superboy's role. And maybe some other "Earth-2 inspired" adjustments. Not that every JSA member needs an analog in the future, but maybe a Hawkboy and/or Hawkgirl? Maybe Robin thinks he sees Dr. Fate and says "what are you doing in the future?!", but when Fate takes off his helmet it's a teenager and he says "I'm Kid Fate, a descendant of the original you knew back in your time!". Maybe Vandal Savage and the Ultra-Humanite are still around in the future as well. An Earth-1/Earth-2 Legion crossover could be fun as well maybe like the classic JSA/JLA team-ups?

It's interesting to me just knowing that they addressed it at some point, no matter how brief the response.

IMO, the most shocking Legion moment of all: the death of Ferro Lad. From Adventure #353

And Ferro Lad even stayed dead! Fancy that.

There’s still a certain amount of 1970s Legion that I haven’t read. So I was browsing the Los Angeles County Library catalog to see if they had any early 1970s LSH reprint volumes in a digital format that I could read on my phone over the next few weeks.
So I checked out two volumes that together start around #235 and go through to about #260 (including some specials, like the over-sized book where Garth and Imra get married). I started reading LSH about #285 (1982, I think), but over the years, I’ve accumulated most of the issues from about #260 to #284, so it’s fun to read several years of adventures right before the era that I know pretty well.
So that means I’m finally going to read Earth War! I’ve heard about it but I’ve never actually read any of it until now. I read #241, the first chapter of Earthwar, last night. It looks promising!

I may be a little biased since the very first Legion story I read as a kid (and was immediately smitten by) was an issue of the Earthwar story arc, but the 70's Legion is my absolute favorite era, bookended by the also fabulous Silver Age run and Levitz/Giffen run in the 80's. While some content was certainly better than others over the years like any long-running feature, the overall Silver and Bronze age Legion is flat out my favorite reading ever. What I particularly like about the 70's is that not only did they never look cooler visually (much design credit to Dave Cockrum on that of course, and then all the great art he and others produced during that decade), but the stories had the perfect mix of fun and weight to them. Wildfire was an exceptional addition to the team, and the characters were all generally likeable still. An example of how that devolved with Levitz/Giffen, much as I love that era too, was turning Phantom Girl (and often Shadow Lass accompanying her) into a completely unlikable jerk and mocking Timber Wolf outright and considering him an idiot. The Great Darkness Saga of course still stands as a major classic and all that, and even the sinister replacement of Shrinking Violet storyline is another example of the 80's upping the ante a bit in terms of sheer impact storytelling, but the Legion world of the 70's is still my favorite place to revisit. Earthwar is my overall favorite story arc, and nothing against Darkseid, but Mordru is a much more intriguing villain to me.

I started sporadically reading it with Superboy and the Legion #228, the death of Chemical King, which is still early in Mike Grell's run. Lot of fun in that whole period, starting with Cockrum's tenure, then on up. I had kind of fallen out of it, after the Legion got spun off into their own title (continuing the numbering) and Superboy got a new title. Came back for the Reflecto business and recapping of Wildfire's origin story, which led me into The Great Darkness Saga. Both great periods.

I'm not sure whether I've actually read all of Earth War. I know I read at least the first issue, but I think I may have stopped partway because I didn't have all the issues at the time. Ironically enough, I recently read a few issues later (starting with #251) and so many of the issues mentions that there's reconstruction underway in the aftermath.

Earth War was the first Legion story I ever read. I was hooked after that! When I first got into the Legion, of course Great Darkness is always mentioned (and rightfully so) but then it's the Earth War saga. In fact, my first issue of the Legion, #300, featured an alternate timeline version of events of the Earth War. So for me as new fan, given its' seeming importance, Earth War was always like the holy grail of Legion epics to read. I'd always heard that Earth War was Levitz's first real attempt at a multi-part on-going story line versus the usual Done-In-One stories. Well some years ago, I was finally able to read the entire saga and it is rip-roaring fun. Action, drama, high stakes, tension, it has it all. Levitz may even admit that to him, the story has some flaws and weaknesses but still, you can see what he was aiming for in this new type of Legion story, a technique that he would certainly refine in his later runs.
