I don't want to get too far off topic, but one thing I like about Kirby's cover is the fact that he has The Thing shaking his fist at the Torch. Most artists would want the lead characters communicating directly with the viewer this early on in their existence - to give them some idea of who these people are - but here Kirby is more interested in depicting the antagonistic nature between Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm - a relatively minor character detail for an early cover. I like that it's been duplicated in the latter cover (though do people no longer go onto their roofs when superheroes go flying by?).

What do you think? Are these "related"? Operation Peril pre-dated SSWS by about 9 years.

How about these? SSWS on sale February 21, 1961; Tales to Astonish on September 2, 1958.

Probably not - With millions of comic book covers in existence, some of 'em are going to - completely coincidentally - overlap. Edit: I came soooo close to spending 30$ on that issue of Operation Peril a few years back, but decided I was too cheap. I still kinda regret it.

At first glance, doesn't this ACG comic from 1956 look similar to a Marvel comic from 1972, when they had that boxy look and all that "trade dress"? .jpg DC did something like that on a few titles, too, a little later. Not suggesting it's a swipe, just a fun coincidence.

The ACG was an attempt to ape 3-D books on the cheap. The pages, like the cover, had black gutters between the panels with elements of the panel sticking out.

Nice covers...I guess they were so good that they had to be posted once again after I posted those before.
