I wonder if that JLA 56 the first example of the "When Heroes Clash" image. I don't recall others offhand, but I can't imagine it didn't appear at some point before that. In terms of charging teams/team face-off/team clashes, the only one I can think of that even comes a bit close is this one, but obviously only the top half of the cover. And they're not lined up along the sides of the cover, which seems to be a hallmark for JLA #56 and the other, later examples.  |

A few Sgt. Rock Pieta-esque covers   and MORE SGT ROCK COVERS... I've read that a subset of the Pieta variations is the Fallen or Wounded Warrior theme, and these are certainly great examples. |
