So why can't we call 'em swipes? Because so many of them are (though some, like the Avengers Special and JLA #56 or most of the Pieta-themed images, are variations of what I'd consider a cover art archetype rather than a deliberate quote of an existing piece of art). Cei-U! Apparently feeling contrarian this fine Sunday morning! I wonder if that JLA 56 the first example of the "When Heroes Clash" image. I don't recall others offhand, but I can't imagine it didn't appear at some point before that.

Among my interests outside of comics is native American art, particularly from here in the southwest. One artist I learned about a while back is Jason Garcia from Santa Clara pueblo. He works in pottery with all traditional materials and pigments, but with a distinctly modern twist in design. Being a comic book fan, some of his work uses comic books to depict pueblo history. Here's one of his better known works, paying homage to a well known Avengers cover but depicting the pueblo revolts of the late 17th century.

So why can't we call 'em swipes? I'm sure other people's definitions differ, but to my mind, an "homage" is where you're paying tribute to another artist, and the viewer is expected to recognize the reference. While a "swipe" is when you copy someone else's work out of desperation or laziness, and hope nobody notices.

I know I am wrong, but I usually think a cover is an homage and panels on an interior page is a swipe. Covers are meant to be recognizable, and referencing iconic images or tipping the hat to iconic creators can add to that recognizability. Interior work is meant to tell the story at hand, and work for another story isn't always appropriate (the lone exception I can think of may be flashbacks to a previous story the current story is referencing), so swiping not only is cheat on time, it's a cheat on the needs of the story you are doing.

It seems that John Byrne did more Homage covers than anyone else.

In reading my copy of The Golden Age Green Lantern Vol 1 Archives, I keep coming across swipes of Bob Kane (of all people to swipe from) artwork in certain stories - especially Green Lantern 1. They're actually fairly ubiquitous at times, but it's hard to locate a lot of swipes/homages on covers before the Silver/Bronze Age. Here's one that had to be pointed out to me and I'm surprised I never noticed it before.
