The Amazing Spider-Man #53 (October, 1967) & #157 (June, 1976) pencils for both by John Romita, Sr. I've always thought #157 was a tribute to the earlier cover, with the action taking place over a pale yellow-toned cityscape, Doc Ock in his green body suit, with a mechanical arm wrapped around Spider-Man's leg, while another strikes one thing (a building's side in one, Spider-Man's jaw in the other). Side note: the stark difference in dyes used to color 70s comics, which lacked the rich shading that gave 60s cover so much dramatic depth. Still, the work of Romita overcomes any issues with coloring in this case.

Where were those covers when we had the shadow subject in the comic cover contest? I would have voted for one of these.

Young hero receiving a beatdown from an oversized villain: Amazing Spider-Man #73 (June, 1969) by John Romita, and just a few months later, Rawhide Kid #72 (October, 1969) by Larry Lieber.

Excellent catch, tarkintino ! This makes me want to check out Rawhide Kid covers... I'm betting there are other "homages" among them.
