Great Maneely (I think) cover on Battle Action. The names are probably just a coincidence. The only instance I could find of "doom" and "patrol" in the name of a story before the DP appeared.

I doubt it's a steal or an hommage, but the similarities jumped out at me. Now to check a cover gallery of GI Combat... Yeah, but both are speaking the same visual language: low angle on an advancing tank under fire. Close enough.

These two covers, while not identical, are closer than I might have expected.

I came across a pretty cool article on the connection between the pulps and comics and thought that there might be more than a few of us who'd be interested... There's a bit on the stuff that I think most of us are already familiar with such as the connection between Doc Savage and Superman, but hey, did you know that according to Stan Lee (or according to Bill Everett according to Stan Lee), Mr. Spock owed his appearance to The Sub-Mariner? I'm sure we've all noticed the similarities, but apparently it was intentional. And speaking of Sub-Mariner... Some other stuff of interest included a possible Mr Mxyzptlk influence on Siegel and Shuster (a bowler hatted sprite appeared a year before our fifth dimensional favorite), a copy of Captain Billy's Whiz Bang publication (which I had heard of due to its Captain Marvel influence, but I don't think I had ever seen), and 1934's The Grey Lensman who, with a lens attached to his hand and membership within an esteemed intergalactic corporation sure sounds a lot to me like 1959's Green Lantern.

Is it really? Considering Marvel had nearly ALL their Rawhide Kid and Two-Gun Kid (and other westerns) innards redrawn with the main character to resemble the then "current" version being published, it is more likely to believe that Kirby was told to simply redraw/insert the main figure of Rawhide Kid. Look closely and everything else on the covers is the same.
