Are you defining "supporting characters" as any character not starring in their own series? Because I would define Bat-Hound as a superhero (albeit a non-human one) rather than a supporting player. Again, I don't get it. Cei-U! I summon the compounded confusion! Sorry, that I forgot the word "BEST" and not in order! ... In my mind, he's a canine superhero that supports Batman and Robin and that's why I put him in the Supporting Category. I changed my Thread Title just now when I just saw your post Kurt! Thanks, Mech, that's helpful (although "best" is a highly subjective term for what is essentially your personal favorites, especially when you aren't familiar with many supporting players like Jack Norriss). I don't necessarily agree with your definition but now I feel like I know where you're coming from. Carry on! Cei-U! I summon the satisfied curiosity!

My Favorite Ace the Bat-Hound AdaptationI just loved this concept it's one of the best adaptation that I know of and just watch this short animated clip of how he takes care of his batarangs. My youngest son loved the Krypto cartoon...and especially Ace. He was about 5 or so when we took the younger boys to Build-a-Bear. He got a dog and dressed him in a Batman outfit and named him Ace.

I assume that it's a character that doesn't have his/her/it's/their own series, appears regularly in another series, and isn't a villain. (Best supporting characters was once of my guesses for this years CCF, along with best editor/writer teams, best accessories/equipment, best villain designs, and best guest appearances.)

ALFRED The Butler - Bruce Wayne/Batman Key Supporting Character Alfred PennyworthFirst Appearance: Batman #16 (April 1943) Created by Bob Kane, Bill Finger, and Jerry Robinson He's quite of a character he's known for being an Retired British intelligence operative, Skilled actor, Trained in emergency medical techniques (big plus for Batman), Proficiency with mechanical and computer systems, and an Expert in domestic sciences. You need all of those attributes to be Batman's faithful butler. From WikipediaAlfred serves as a loyal, tireless butler who assists his employer's secret life as Batman. In modern interpretations, he is depicted as Bruce Wayne's butler, legal guardian, best friend, aide-de-camp, and surrogate father following the murders of Thomas Wayne and Martha Wayne. He sometimes has been called "Batman's batman". He also provides comic relief, as his sometimes sarcastic and cynical attitude often adds humor to dialogue between himself and Batman. Two of the very Best Animated Cartoons of Alfred.Filmation's Alfred and Alfred in Batman the Animated Series
I just loved the one in Batman the Animated Series and I grew up watching The New Adventures of Batman and Robin and I barely remember that Animated Cartoon and having said that one of the Supporting Character that had significant air-time was Alfred. The Batman the Animated Series - that Alfred was perfect in every way shape and form and that why I consider it the Best Batman Cartoon of all time and I wished it ran forever.

Absolutely love Alfred, one of the best supporting characters of all time. But how many remember that his last name was originally 'Beagle', not 'Pennyworth'? Later, this was confirmed as the name of the Alfred of Earth Two.

Far be it for me to speak for him, but I suppose that ultimately, although this list will be entirely subjective, it's MechaGodzilla's hope that it could potentially spark some decent community discussion of the various characters that he chooses. As well as those he left out perhaps? And after all, discussing comic book characters -- especially the more obscure ones ('cause, you know, we're nerds) -- is what we're all here for.

Later, this was confirmed as the name of the Alfred of Earth Two. Alfred, as played by Alan Napier, was the best thing about the old '60s Batman TV series. There, I said it! ** = This comment might be in the wrong thread.

Fat Alfred is the only true Alfred!
Did SKINNY Alfred ever have his own strip where he solved crimes? I THINK NOT!

Abigail "Abby" Arcane Cable HollandFirst appearance: Swamp Thing #3 (February–March 1973) Note to All Members and GuestsMy expressed apologies for not mentioning her in the 1st Place and I forgot to alphabetize my list in the 1st place and this character should had been mentioned first. From WikipediaAbigail "Abby" Arcane Cable Holland is a fictional comic book character in the DC Comics Universe. She is the wife and partner of the Swamp Thing and is the mother of Tefé Holland. Holland possesses natural shining white hair, the color of fresh snow, with two overlapping black streaks of hair starting from above her evenly wide forehead. Holland's psychic powers include empathy, telepathy and telekinesis. She first appeared in Swamp Thing #3 (1973) and was created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. Modern Drawing of Abby hereMy Personal Favorite Picture of Abby with Swamp Thing - Done by Bernie Wrightson - In a Close-Up! of the Cover done in Swamp Thing #3. More from WikipediaAbby Holland is born Abigail Arcane, in Transylvania, Romania in late 1955. The birth takes place at Castle Arcane, her family's ancestral home. Abby is born to Count Gregori Arcane and his beautiful wife Anise. Soon after, however, Gregori's jealous brother Anton Arcane has Anise framed for witchcraft and Abby's mother is burned to death at the stake by superstitious villagers, while Gregori watches helplessly in horror, protecting his infant daughter in his arms, as his wife dies. Gregori is then forced by the government to share custody of Abby with Anton, and is often called away on business commitments out of the country, leaving Abby to her uncle's potential influence and abuses. Despite having a troubled childhood filled with nightmares and abuses from those around her, Abby manages to keep her sanity and cherishes the rare moments she gets to spend with her father. Growing up, Abby takes on summer interests in hiking in the forests, swimming and diving, amateur rock climbing and sight seeing alone, and all of which fuel her interest in nature, ecology and environmentalism. As a teenager, Abby experiences a strong sense of empathy with others. At first this terrifies her, but then she becomes more attuned to the ability to "feel" other people's emotions and uses that advantage in ways to help them. Realizing her village needs a medic, she begins to study first aid, eventually becomes a nurse, and rents and manages a children's clinic. On a personal Note:This is a real multi-talented girl with a troubled past and with a very abusive uncle. I feel for her in a way that she is so nature-oriented and developed a strong sense of emotions, empathy, and most of all a very caring person that you can trust. I love this character on a personal level because I love swimming, being in the outdoors, and most of all I love to sight seeing alone because it's gives me peace and tranquility and that's why I like this character so much. I feel sad that I did not mentioned her in the 1st place and gave Ace the Bat-Hound as a Starting Point on my thread here. Abby Holland is one of those characters that you can love and most of all gave Swamp Thing a Human that cares about Alec Holland ... a.k.a Swamp Thing in an unique way possible.

Alicia Reiss Masters - Supporting Character for Thing/Fantastic FourFirst appearance: The Fantastic Four #8 (Nov 1962) From WikipediaAlicia is a blind sculptor who is able to create incredibly lifelike representations of real people by touch and memory alone; her sculptures of the Fantastic Four and other superheroes are frequently depicted. A caring, sensitive character, she has been a romantic interest and confidant of The Thing, a member of the Fantastic Four who is frequently ashamed of his monstrous appearance. Alicia is introduced in Fantastic Four #8, along with her stepfather, the supervillain known as the Puppet Master. She initially aids him out of obedience in his first scheme against the Fantastic Four, though she immediately senses the "gentle" and "sensitive" spirit of the Thing when she first feels his palpably monstrous face. Alicia turns on her stepfather when she realizes that he is mad and power-hungry, and accidentally causes him to fall to his apparent death out of a window. A subsequently published story explains that the Puppet Master had been responsible for her permanent blindness, which was caused by an explosion of radioactive clay during his fight with a rival On a Personal Note:According to Wikipedia and other sources she is a supporting character for Silver Surfer of which I have ZERO KNOWLEDGE at all and having said that I have no recollection of that because I don't read much of the Silver Surfer except his adventures with the Fantastic Four. Some Tender Moments with Alice and The Thing (2 Pictures) I just loved these two pictures during my reading with the Fantastic Four in the early days of their adventures back in the 60's. Favorite Picture of Alice Master as a Sculptor who happens to be Blind. Of all the Movies of the Fantastic Four - Alice Masters was portrayed and I having said that I have no opinions on all the actresses that portrayed her and did not have a lasting impact on me. Therefore she was a main supporting character in the early days of the Fantastic Four and one of the nicest character around despite having an evil step-father in the Puppet Master that she first appeared in Fantastic Four #8.
