I'm not enjoying New Avengers at all, but Ultimates has been a really pleasant surprise, especially as it's sort-of a follow-on to Mighty Avengers, which I thought was awful.

If the rumors are true, Jonathon Hickman will be working on Rebirth, and hopefully later, be on The Legion of Super-Heroes !
That would definitely bring me back

Jonathon Hickman- Comes up with an idea for a story and milks it for 4 years. I would never buy his stuff in monthly installments

Please, please. please no. Let Hickman stay on his crappy Image stuff that I can ignore... keep him far, far away from anything good like the Legion.

More on DC's effective planning for the relaunch via Bleeding Cool... BC storyit's seems Dan Didio and company are being led by Alfred E. Neuman these days...what me worry pfah! It's only the future of our publishing company on the line, why should we get our ducks in a row before we announce the project when we can make it up as we go along...yeah that's the ticket to success!.... Well the creative teams have been revealed for most of the books now CBR Wondercon coverageand for the most part I am completely underwhelmed. Greg Rucka on Wonder Woman with Nicola Scott doing alternate arcs (that are Year One type of stories between regular arcs with a different unannounced artist) is the only boo that got my attention enough to think, hey I might want to read that. -M

Underwhelming is definitely the word for it. Shuffling around the same handful of creators amongst slight variations of the same books you were already publishing does not an exciting reboot make. At least Superman is finally rid of that ridiculous Nehru collar.

One of my favorite columnists covering the Dalla sCowboys does a 5 wonders piece every week or so spotlighting questions or issues surrounding the team-in that tradition, here are my...
5 Wonders of DC Rebirth
1) When DC launched the DCYOu, there were a couple of titles that tempted me to check them out, mostly Omega Men and Dr. Fate, but I decided to trade wait. Before the first trade of either was released, Rebirth was announced and several of the DC You titles bit the dust. I wonder how much of this Rebirth line-up will remain intact when the first batch of trades from it is released?
2)I wonder what the drop off in sales will be between issue 3 and 4 (3 is ordered before 1 is out) on monthlies and between 6 and 7 (biweekly order differential)-average for most books in this market is about 30-35%, DCYou saw sharper dropoffs, so I wonder how Rebith titles will do with the 2xmonth schedule and rotating teams?
3) Since the new52 launch, Batman has been a perenniel top 10 book (often top overall seller) with Snyder and Capullo at the helm-I wonder with King and rotating artists and twice a month schedule will it still be a perennial top 5 book and maintain sales over 100K per issue as the Snyder new52 book did?
4) I wonder at all the exclusive contracts DC is handing out to creators for Rebirth and how many will wind up like Jerry Ordway-under exclusive contract but not receiving work and unable to look elsewhere, especially if books the exclusive creators are working on tank? Will they be shuffled to other books and bump non-exclusive creators to keep them working even if the other books were successful? These seem to be pure exclusive contracts-not just no Marvel work, so what happens to the creator owned stuff by these creators?
5)In the new52 era, 20K issues per month was the cancellation threshold for titles. I wonder how double-shipping will affect that-will twice a month shipping lower the threshold because they will still be moving more units or will the accompanying $2.99 price tag that comes with bi-weekly shipping raise the threshold because books will be making less money per sale with the smaller margins and higher production cost per month. Also I wonder how the smaller slate of books will affect it, will each book have to carry more of the revenue burden and sell more, or will (hopefully) fewer less popular books ease the burden a bit?
Sadly these type of questions are more interesting to me at this point than any story DC will release in the next year, and that is perhaps the most damning thing I can say about DC right now. Their follies as a company are more interesting than their product currently.

I think the question of Batman being a perennial best seller in lieu of a new creative team is a moot point. It's Batman, it's going to sell regardless. Especially since the first half of that Rebirth announcement was focused solely on the Bat-stable of books. Synder going to a new Bat-book should ease the transition even more.
Looking over this news, the only DC title I regularly follow right now is the Flash. I don't know either the writer nor the artists listed for his new title.
Is it sad that all I really want is to read a good Superman book? I'm willing to try the first issue or two of the Superman line of books just to see how they are (though the addition of Jurgens raises my hopes somewhat).
Rucka on WW is great news. His run was really the last time I followed her monthly.
Ted Kord is back.....TED KORD IS BACK.....with Jaime.....I may have to check that out as well.

Few quick comments: Nightwing 'Better than Batman' - Totally in for that Tec as a team-up book, with Clayface in the mix? Intrigued... I'll check it out. I MAY check out Jurgens on Superman, but it sounds like there's going to be 2 Supermen (3 if you could 'New Superman').. blah. Green Lanterns is apparently not John Stewart, Guy, or Kyle... pass Aquaman and Titans with Dan Abnett? Maybe. Titans will depend on the roster... If it's still Tim Drake-led, I'll probably pass. Otherwise I'll probably check it out. Batgirl on walkabout? Meh. Didn't work for Damian... and I like the Burnside setting. No mention of Gotham Academy makes me very sad

Rebirth looks to be trying to please everyone and most of the time that works out to pleasing no one. Newsarama has the press only event that come afterward with some info about things coming a little later. Earth 2 and Gotham Academy will continue without a Rebirth issue. HERE is the art made bigger.

Now on to specific commentary...AS IT HAPPENED!!!! (on a 12 hour tape delay)
REBIRTH: Characters return (the JSA?), one dies (New 52 Superman? we seem to have a spare) and the biggest secret EVER!!! (it better involve Ambush Bug, Krypto or Congorilla)
BATMAN: King's OK, but Finch is a strike against. Is that the new Wendy and Marvin on the cover? BUY
DETECTIVE COMICS: A team with two of my all time favorites (Batman and Tim Drake), two I can take or leave (Clayface and Batwoman) and two I hate more than just about anyone (Cass and Steph). No room for the awful Harper Row? Interesting concept, and an average creative team. BUY, but there may be a quick hook
ALL STAR BATMAN: Snyder is good, not great. I'm not enamored with the "all star" artist lineup though. BUY, but I might skip the Paul Pope arc.
NIGHTWING: Creative team is OK and I'm interested in him being "better than Batman." BUY
BATGIRL: Art looks good, but a backpacking trip to Asia? UGH! BUY, at least this comic will finally look good
BATGIRL AND THE BIRDS OF PREY: BUY until I can't stand Bertanelli's presence any more.
ACTION COMICS: super powered Lex? old school Lois & Clark? BUY
NEW SUPER MAN: maybe this will be more Yang's speed, BUY and hope the Great Ten guest stars
SUPERGIRL: Let's hope this direction (or any direction) goes longer than six issues. BUY
TRINITY: Manapul seems to get the basics right. BUY
SUPERWOMAN: I'd like a few more details, but the creative team works for me. BUY
SUPERMAN: This team does solid work. BUY
WONDER WOMAN: Rucka again? Oh yes and Nicola Scott is coming too. BUY
JUSTICE LEAGUE: I guess this must be the B book going forward with Hitch as a writer.(?) Team still looks good. BUY
JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA: This one will get it's own announcement, so I'm guessing this one will be "driving the DC bus." BUY
FLASH: Looks like Barry is getting a bunch of trainees as well. New Wally West looks fun. BUY
HAL JORDAN & THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS: VanSciver does some of the art, but Venditti is a strike against. BUY GREEN LANTERNS: So a four way gun battle among Green Lantern fans is about to become a six way one? Rebirth in a nutshell as DC fractures the fanbase even further. I'm not really a fan of either one of these two though. NOT BUYING
CYBORG: Semper says "We're really going to go into a dark place with him, and figure out what he's all about." Yikes. NOT BUYING
AQUAMAN: Not much of an Abnett fan, but he's been OK so far. BUY, for now.
TITANS: Dear God no, the return of Junkie Lad. Is that Omen? UGH! At least Nightwing's back. BUY, but there could be a quick hook.
HARLEY QUINN: The fourth pillar of DC Comics. Hell in a handbasket. NOT BUYING
SUICIDE SQUAD: Is Little Miss Fourth Pillar in it? NOT BUYING
GREEN ARROW: Oh no, not the beard! NOT BUYING
RED & THE OUTLAWS: Not even Bizarro can overcome Jason Todd and Scott Lobdell. NOT BUYING
HELLBLAZER: NOT BUYING
DEATHSTROKE: Jim Owsley! I mean....Christopher Preist!!! Wait, I don't like his writing that much, but it was a surprise. NOT BUYING
BATMAN BEYOND: If I didn't like the cartoon what chance does the comic have? NOT BUYING
BLUE BEETLE: Ted and Jamie is a positive, but Keith Giffen writing is a major negative. BUY and hope Kieth doesn't do any art.
TEEN TITANS: Damian is a good addition, but I hope Bunker is still around. BUY
SUPER SONS: About a decade later than I wanted, but I'm happy. BUY
EARTH 2: still BUYING
GOTHAM ACADEMY: THE NEXT SEMESTER: still NOT BUYING

I think the question of Batman being a perennial best seller in lieu of a new creative team is a moot point. It's Batman, it's going to sell regardless. Especially since the first half of that Rebirth announcement was focused solely on the Bat-stable of books. Synder going to a new Bat-book should ease the transition even more. It's a moot point? Batman with Snyder shed about a third of its readers over the last 2 years (it was averaging about 150K in sales and the last few haven't broken 100K and it was averaging the 150K before variants were a regular feature to prop sales. Meanwhile none of the other Batman titles without Snyder (Tec, Dark Knight, or Batman and Robin) from the new52 average half of what Batman was selling (none of them broke 75K on average, most were under 50K for most of their lifespan). So "it's Batman, it will sell regardless" doesn't pan out if you look at actual sales numbers of new52 Batman books. And if you loo at Batman sales pre-Morrison form before the new52, Batman sales were even bleaker. Snyder's Batman sold well, the rest were mid-tier or poor sellers. Yes, the Batline sells better than the rest of the DC line, but that's not because the Batline is selling gangbusters, it's because everything else is selling like crap. So if I were DC, I would be very concerned to see how a non-Snyder Batman will sell twice a month, especially since there is a Snyder alternative people can buy instead that will feature top-tier artists, well known villains and not require cross-over purchases with other titles to follow storylines. I can see All Star Batman becoming the top DC seller and Batman under King falling back to the pack, which is exactly what DC (and lots of shop owners who order big on Batman) doesn't want to happen. -M
